It's So Hard...
Who: Brandi, Skylar, and Ben
Where: Bale Estate
When: May 12, 2019
Things had been weird in Brandie Bale's home the past couple of days. Well, things were hardly ever 'normal' in the textbook definition of the word in the little werewolf's world, but things were extra weird. Her parents had been distant, and that was not like them at all. She went into the living room to find her father brooding once again. "Daddy? Are you OK?"
Honestly? It had been months since things had been 'ok' for Benjamin Bale. All the drama with Bella would have been enough for one lifetime, but then to have Brayden vanish, and THEN to realize that all this disruption of the time stream was effectively causing their reality to cease being? Yeah. Ben was NOT a happy camper. Still, he had to smile when he was shaken from his thoughts by the sweet, caring voice of his youngest daughter. The person he'd just been thinking of, actually.
"Brandie... Hey. Yeaaaah, yer old man's fine, honey. Just got a lot on my mind."
He reached over, placing a comforting palm on her cheek.
"I think.... I think we might be sending you to spend some time with Brayden and Bella, honey. Things might be getting a little hairy around here for a while, and your mom and I think it might be safer if we get you out of harm's way for a while."
Come on, now. Even a jackass like Ben wasn't going to tell a 14 year old girl 'everyone here is gonna basically die, so we're getting you the hell outta here. See you next lifetime'.
"Can you do that for us? Help us worry a lot less for a while?"
Brandie reached up and touched her father's hand. "Stay with Bella and Brayden?" she looked confused. "Why? What's going on?" The youngest Bale girl had been sheltered a lot from the goings on of her parents and older siblings, but she could sense that something was amiss. She just didn't know what.
"You know people like to cause trouble for us, sweetheart..." He said nonchalantly, trying his best to sound like it was no big deal. He knew damn well she'd never go if she knew how bad it was. "Your mom and I just... don't want you to get hurt. You'll see us again soon, I promise." Now THAT part broke his heart into a hundred pieces. Technically she WOULD see them again soon. But HE would never see HER again, and it killed him inside.
Either he was that practiced of a liar, or she was just willing to believe her father, because she didn't question it. "OK," she said to him. "I wish people would act better toward the two of you."
"I think things will be changing soon, sweetheart." Yeah, Ben, ya think? "You can go get packed in a few minutes. For now, how about come gimme a hug? I... could really, really use one."
She walked over and hugged him tightly. "How long do you think I'll have to be away?" she asked him.
"I'm not sure, honeybear." OhmyGOD. Benjamin Bale. Using the word 'honeybear'. Like this future could last? "But I promise you'll see us soon. And you know I'd never lie to you." He smiled sadly as he wrapped his arms around her, trying not to cry. "You know your daddy loves you, right?"
"I know you love me," she said. "I love you, too." She finally pulled away after a few moments. "Guess I should go and pack some stuff then, shouldn't I?"
"Don't pack TOO much baby." He said with a smile. "Just some of your favorite clothes, stuff like that." God forbid, he didn't want her turning up in the past with books or movies that didn't technically exist yet. "Be a dear and tell your mom I'd like to see her?"
She nodded. She didn't figure it would be for more than a couple of days anyway. "OK, I'll go and get, Mom," she said, running to the other room. A few minutes later, Skylar appeared in the room.
The moment the girl was gone, Ben felt it coming. He felt the tears welling. And then? When he saw Skylar standing there? He broke. So quickly, so badly, that one could practically hear the crack. He let his head drop into his hands, and started sobbing.
Skylar just sat down with him and wrapped her arms around him. She couldn't exactly say anything comforting, could she? What COULD be said at this point?
"G-get a pen, darling..." He mumbled as he buried his face into her neck. "We n-need to make sure Brandie's taken care of where she's going. And the only people there I trust to do it... are you and I."
She reached over and grabbed a pen. "I'm not sure I would have been willing to stay if we would have not been able to send her to us," she said softly to him.
"For now..." He sniffed, forcing his emotions back for now, "call Bella. Tell her what we're doing. I'm going to find McDonald, and get this done."
Skylar nodded. "I'll find her and tell her," she said, holding onto him for another few moments. "Try not to kill him. Unfortunately we kind of need him right now. For our children's sakes."
"Consider it done. And... While I know they aren't my biggest fans, I'm going to go tell the McConnell's what's going on. They..." He sighed, shaking his head, "they deserve to know."
She nodded when he said the last part. "They deserve to say their goodbyes to one another." There would be a call she would make also. She would call Wesley and tell him to stay with Gwen. She didn't love the woman like she once did, bit she didn't want her to be alone at the end either.
