Recording Studio Talks
Who: Kevin, Ash, and Lucy
Where: Van Warren Basement Recording Studio
When: Saturday, 5/8
Lucy sat on the floor of the recording study, surrounded by mountains of paper and sitting with her guitar in her lap. Ever since getting her first inspiration for the Van Warren album that they had been dying to record, it seemed that she had been doing very little other than writing music and lyrics for it. She couldn't help it. When she got into music writing, it was as if little else existed in her world. She wasn't quite sure what to make of all of the ideas almost pouring out of her head, but all she really knew to do was write them down and figure them out, hence, her sitting on the floor.
Kevin had gone upstairs to fix another pot of coffee for his sister (where did she PUT it all in that tiny body???), and after a few minutes, came back downstairs with caffeinated goodness. He set the pot and the cream and sugar next to her, just watching her silently for a few. "Jeez, Luce... Yer really focused, huh? You've barely said a word all afternoon." He hooked his thumbs into his jeans pockets, shadowed eyes watching her closely.
She had barely noticed him when he came in, and actually jumped a tad when he spoke. "Oh!" She looked up at him and giggled. "Sorry, kind of forgot you were here. Yeah, focused. I worry that if I don't write it down I'll forget it, you know?" She reached over and grabbed the cup of coffee, taking a long sip.
"It freaks me out to think of where you were when you... got the inspiration for all this, but... I'm just glad you're back. That's what matters." He walked over and lovingly ruffled her hair. "Luce... Can I ask you for a huge favor?"
"It kind of freaks me out, too," she admitted to him, looking up at him. "Still, it's' better to write it all out than keep it all bottled up inside, right?" She smiled at him. "Sure, ask away."
"You and Chloe know a lot about fashion, nice jewelry, etc... I wanna get a promise ring for Buffy." He smiled bashfully. "Not exactly ready to propose or anything... But a promise ring is kinda saying that eventually, I will. Would you help me pick a great one for her?"
Her smile got wide when he said that. "Really? You're gonna propose that you'll propose one day?" She squealed. "I would so LOVE to help you pick out a ring for that."
"Heh. Yeah. I love her, you know? Buffy's just more... full of life than anyone I've ever met. Not exactly hard on the eyes either, but that's not what REALLY matters. She's my best friend, and how many people get to have both there, you know? I want her to know how much she means to me." Then, because by now? Lucy knew what was going on... "Plus, since we already have a grown daughter running around... no time like the present, right?"
"Hmm...grown daughter...not like I don't have one of those myself," Lucy said with a smile. "Kind of weird, honestly. I still don't really know what to think of all that." She shook her head. "Anyways, back to you and your pre-proposal ring! When do you want to do it? Go pick it out, that is."
"How about I pick you up from school Monday, and we go then? Did you have any plans already?" He asked, while absently taking a look at some of what she'd written, his eyes widening. Damn... interesting shit.
She shook her head. "Sounds good to me!" Monday was fine with her. She didn't have any solid plans. If she hadn't made any plans, she probably just would have went and hung out with Ash or worked on more music.
"Thanks, Luce. You're the best one to ask. I mean, Chloe would get so distracted we'd probably go everywhere BUT, Rachelle would end up taking me to buy Buffy a Red Sox jersey or something, and Lexi's getting ready for her tour... I think you see my predicament." He said with a chuckle.
She laughed. "I don't know, Buffy might LIKE the Red Sox for all you know," she pointed out. "Seriously? I'd be totally honored to come with you and pick out a ring. How do you think she'll react? Like, happy, obviously, but is she a crier or what?"
"Buffy? No... she's... more of a rambler. Like a less extreme version of you or Chloe. She's more likely to stammer, giggle, and say something cutely ridiculous." Now. Tell me Kevin didn't know Buffy well.
"Then she's already perfect if she's like us," Lucy said with a laugh. Really, who was more perfect at everything than Lucy Van Warren?
"So... I have to ask... when you were... you know," He pointed skyward, still unable to actually say 'dead' when thinking of his baby sister, "This stuff you're writing... this is actually what you saw happening to Ash, and, I guess, to all of us, had you not come back?"
She nodded. She had seen what it had done to him, after all. She had seen it all. When you were dead, time wasn't exactly linear anymore. You could look all around. "Yeah, it's what I saw," she said, her voice getting a little more quiet. "I'm so glad that it's NOT gonna happen now, but it's something I still dream about a lot." She looked up at him. "If I write it down and channel it somewhere else, maybe I'll stop dreaming about it, you know?"
"Yeah... I just... I never thought I'd say it, but I get where he'd have been coming from. For once, I understand Ash. You're the world to him. I see it in his eyes. When he wasn't even at the... the..." he couldn't quite get 'funeral' out, "I knew it was bad." He reached over then, hugging her tightly. "Don't ever go leavin' me again, Luce, ok?"
She hugged him back equally as tight. "I don't ever want to leave again, Kevin," she said back to him, squeezing her eyes shut to block the tears that were coming from the rush of emotions in this. "Never, ever, ever."
"We're gonna be huge. I'm gonna see to it. You got a second chance, and me and Chloe are gonna make sure EVERYONE knows how amazing you are." Because in his mind? Nobody deserved adoration and fame more than his little sis.
"Of course we're gonna be huge," Lucy said, as if it were a fact already. "How else could this world work but than for us to be huge?"
"I still cant believe how much coffee you and Chloe can put away. You DO realize this is the third pot you've had today..." He smirked, shaking his head in some small bit of amazement.
"Dude, me and her convert it into our life force, don't you know that?" she asked with a giggle. "I can't believe you didn't get the sugar gene."
"I guess ONE of us had to have a chance of not being diabetic by age 30..." He replied with a noncommittal shrug, trying not to laugh as he was suddenly interupted by the ringing of the doorbell. "Hrm. Hang on... I should go see who that is..."
"Oh bah!" she said to the idea of her ever being diabetic. If she couldn't have sugar, she might actually die from it. She nodded when he said he was going to see who was at the door.
Finally, the basement door opened again, but this time, instead of coming back down... Kevin just sighed and called down. "I'm guessing at this point, saying 'behave' is like telling Chloe to 'calm down', but... just... yeah. Nevermind. Do what ya want... I'm gonna go stop by Buffy's place." The reason for his flustered tone became known in a moment though, as Ash came quietly walking down the steps. "Whoa... so THIS is the studio Chloe had built, huh? Impressive.... seriously."
She had looked at Kevin bewildered until she had seen that it was Ash behind him, and then it totally made sense. "Well, only the best for a Van Warren," she said. She ran over to him and wrapped him up in a hug.
The quickness with which the little thing had run to him to embrace him never failed to make Ash melt a little inside. The girl truly loved him with everything she was, and had no problem making it apparent. "Hey... miss me, baby?"
"Always," she said, snuggling up to him. "I've been down here all day working on stuff. I even got spooked by Kevin at one point, and I might be the only person to say that in the history of Kevin."
"Well, if he was done up like a drag queen or something, I'd have been spooked too..." He muttered, still enjoying occasionally making smart-assed remarks about Kevin. He couldn't help it.
"Oh he's not a cross dresser and you know it," she scolded. "Not that there's anything wrong with it if he is. That's his business!" That part was said loud enough so that, if he was still there, Kevin could hear.
"You sure?" Ash said, teasingly. "I saw a dress up there that looked a LIIIIITTLE too big for you or Chloe..."
She smacked him on the shoulder. "I'm completely sure," she said to him.
"So... how've things been with you and Mere lately?" He asked, intertwining his fingers with hers. "I've seen her and you, but the three of us haven't really been together much lately..."
Lucy grinned. "They've been good," she said. "I think she might be kind of sort of seeing someone right now, too. Well, as much as Mere sees any one person, you know?"
"You girls are SO damn hot together, you know that?" He asked, laughing with a little blush. He loved that while Lucy was still her old self, that mere had rubbed off a little on her in some ways.
"Duh," Lucy pointed out. If only people realized that that little dirty girl had always been in there. Maybe, after dying, she was just a little more willing to do a little extra living.
"So... who's she seeing?" He asked, both honestly interested, and kind of wondering if this was where the strange 'relationship' he had with both girls was goign to start tapering off.
"Brayden Bale," she said. "Well, that's who she's been seen at Avarice with more than once, anyway, so that's kind of what I'm going on."
"Good GOD." He said, looking skyward. "Yeah, that can possibly end well." He mused, as from what he'd heard, Brayden was essentially the male version of Meredith, only without the niceness.
"Really? That bad huh?" She cringed. "Guess this isn't the time to mention that he asked me to play guitar in a band with him, huh?"
Ohhhhh yeah. Any playfulness Ash had been displaying? Went poof there. His eyes quickly turned jet black, and he actually trembled a bit. "If that pig even FLIRTS with you, I swear I'll skin him alive."
"Why would I even want that?" she asked. Even if Brayden and Mere might be similar in some aspects, Mere had a charm and a girlish naivete that, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't quite shake. Lucy had NO interesting in Brayden Bale. "Trust me on that."
"Good. Because that son of a bitch..." He grinned, "And I mean that LITERALLY," Yeah, he still had no love for Skylar, "even THINKS about touching you, and they'll be finding pieces of him for weeks."
"You've really got to calm down," Lucy said to him. "Have any thoughts on Mere seeing him then, since you don't seem to want him to be in the same ROOM as me?"
"Mere... wow. I'm not thrilled with the idea, but I have to admit that in some ways, they compliment each other. We love Meredith, but come on, Lucy..." He had to laugh a little there, "She's got the morals of... of... ok, I can't even think of a good analogy there."
Now this confused her. So, Brayden wasn't good enough for Lucy to be in the same room with, but he was fine for Meredith. Talk about a double standard, morals aside. "So, you wouldn't want her to find someone that's going to be...I don't know, better for her than that?"
"Lucy... if I had my way? Mere would be with a guy who's... who's... amazing. Sweet, gentlemanly... treats her like a queen. I don't even think *I* deserve her." He explained, kissing her forehead. "Problem is... Mere is more hardheaded than you are. And she wants what she wants. And no amount of convincing from me is gonna work."
"Well, what she wants is YOU," Lucy pointed out. "But, since you are so obviously in love with me," she grinned, "she can't have you to herself, and she kind of deserves someone that, at least emotionally, can be hers and hers alone."
"Yeah, that's my point. I love her... and I want you both. But... she deserves better than that. I love her and respect her too much to want her to stay in this, if she can have someone who wants only her." And then? He sneered a little. "And I'll tell you this: if he hurts her? Breaks her heart at all? It will be the last thing he EVER does."
"You mean besides the fact that I'll make sure he'll never get his music famous if he hurts her?" Lucy asked. "Because I know the right people. I can totally do that." And she meant it, too. Maybe it had to do with the whole 'brought back to life magic mojo' but Lucy cared for Mere A LOT.
And that was the saddest part of this all. Both Ash and Lucy loved Mere... but they loved each other FAR more. And they both respected the girl too much to want her to be a third wheel. "If Meredith wants to be with us... I know neither of us will turn her down. Ever. But if she decides she's found someone, anyone, who will make her the center of his or her universe, the way you are to me... who are we to deny her that?"
"I wouldn't want to deny her that," Lucy said to him. "I just kind of agree that she deserves way better than Brayden Bale...or anything related to a Bale, really."
"There's... a few decent ones, I'll admit." He had come to realize that, actually. "Neely is becoming, well, probably one of my best friends. But if Brayden is half as much like Ben as I hear... shit, Ben already helped ruin Gwen... I don't want his shithead offspring ruining Meredith."
"OK...Neely ASIDE," Lucy said. Neely was nice. Although if she went after her boyfriend, Lucy would set her hair on fire. She could be possessive too! "Maybe one of us should give him a talking to, then."
"You know... I still cant believe Neely's MARRIED. It's like the punchline to a joke or something." He observed, laughing. "But anyway. I wasn't interrupting, was I? You looked pretty busy down here..."
"A weird punchline," Lucy said. She looked around her. "I was just working. I can always get back to it later." It wasn't like the stuff in her head was really going away, after all.
"Mind leaving it for a bit? I kind of wanted to take you out for dinner." Yeah, the kid with almost no money offering to take the rich girl out for dinner. Only in America!
"Sure, I can always come back to it," she said to him. She wanted to spend some time with her, Ash, and, like it was said before, this stuff wasn't leaving her any time soon."
