Wants and Desires
Who: Jack and Louise
Where: Eden
When: 4/23, Friday Evening
Jack drove up to Eden in his beat up van that he had for at least ten years, parking it in the parking lot and jumping out of it. Sure, now he could afford something nicer, especially with the advance that he had gotten from the record label, but the van had sentimental value, so he kept it. He got past the bouncer at the front door (for free, since it was good to have someone who was probably going to be famous show up at your place, apparently), he walked inside, eyes open for only one person tonight that he hoped was there.
While she owned her own club, tonight? Louise wanted to be with 'real' people. The ones that kept her remembering why she wanted to cling to the desperate little that was left of her humanity. But this? Wasn't helping. No... right now, as she stood by the bar in a black and silver miniskirt that made her legs look never-ending, she found herself giving an intense GLARE towards two teenage boys who kept oogling her from across the club. Idiots.
Jack wanted to laugh when he saw her. Not because she didn't look great, because she did, but because of the pure menace she was shooting toward those kids that were oogling her . He walked up beside her and said, "If you keep looking at them like that, they might run away."
"That's the idea." She said with a smirk. "I may yet kill at least one of them." She turned to look at him, a smile creeping across her face. "I remember back when you'd have beaten people up for looking at me like that..."
"Well, I've grown up a little since then," Jack told her. "Plus, you seem to be able to more than take care of yourself now." The last part was supposed to be a joke.
"Well. That *is* true... although I must admit, especially back then? You being all possessive? Was a bit of a turn-on for a quiet, shy thing like me." She grinned, as the memories flooded back, threatening to almost make her seem human again.
"If you want me to tell them to go to hell for you, I will," he said playfully. "Because, no matter how much I know you can defend yourself, they won't know it until you actually do it."
"You know... for now, just stay here with me, and I'll be happy. Or at least as happy as I get these days." She sighed, looking him over before asking the question she almost dreaded the answer to. "So... I would imagine Meredith is thrilled to be... human again."
"Then I'll stay over here," he told her. As for Mere... "Yeah, she seems happy. I have to admit, other than the 'I'm human again!' meeting, I haven't had the chance to see much of her lately."
"I'm selfish, Jack. And I hate it. I hate that I'm actually SAD she can't be with me forever now. I had all these plans... of turning YOU eventually, of taking however long it took to get her to forgive me. To be... a family again." She couldn't meet his gaze as she blurted this all out, just shaking her head.
He sighed when he heard that. "Sadly, I really wouldn't have been that mad about it," he admitted to her after a few moments of thinking. "I think Mere would have gotten past it eventually." Sadly, a part of him thought that it sounded kind of tempting.
"I... don't think I could have hurt you. And now? Both of you? Never. I couldn't do it." She sighed, refusing to let that part of her win out, no matter how badly she wanted something.
He nodded. He knew that he should be glad that she was still able to hold onto herself like that. "That's probably for the best," he said to her.
"You know, Jack... I never, EVER, stopped loving either of you. I stayed in the background, watching over you both. Trying to protect you when I could... trying to... not want to throw myself into the sunlight when I had to see you give yourself to innumerable unworthy women..."
"Louise, if I had known what had actually happened, things would have been very different," Jack said to her. "I thought that you had ran away. I even tried calling your parents. You mother hung up as soon as I said one word. I thought you had went back to live with them and they were just trying to make sure I didn't talk to you."
"Yes. Well." She snorted a little, silently cursing her parents then. "Like they'd have understood if they knew what I'd become. And they... weren't your biggest fans to begin with. They thought you corrupted their innocent young daughter." Then? She gave that mischievous little grin he'd fallen in love with years earlier. "Not that they were totally wrong on that one."
"No, they really weren't wrong on that number," he said with a slight smirk. "I still can't believe that they reacted as badly as they did, though. Then again, I got really lucky with parents."
"For the record? I knew you'd make it one day. It took longer than you wanted and than I expected... but I knew you'd be a star eventually. My beautiful, beautiful Jack..." She reached up, those cold fingers stroking the side of his face tenderly.
He reached up and touched the hand that was on his cheek. "At least I'm getting to live my dream, even if it took a little longer than expected." He looked at her, reaching up to brush a bit of hair out of her face. "What about you? What do you dream about?"
"I don't." She said, giving a sad sigh. "Everything that mattered in my life was taken from me almost 19 years ago, my love."
"I'm still here, Louise," he said to her. "So's Mere. We can make this work if we try."
"I think... even as a vampire, Meredith barely tolerated me. I don't see her exactly running to me with open arms as a human." Now remember... Louise kept tabs on EVERYTHING they both did. And she... forgot that sometimes? Jack didn't know everything she did. "Especially now that she's been so busy with the Bale boy and with her interesting little love triangle with Ash and the Van Warren girl..."
"I think that Mere just doesn't really know what to make of you yet," Jack said. Then it was like suddenly dragging a needle over a record, his change was so abrupt. "If that creepy little kid doesn't get the hell out of my daughter's life soon, I'm going to kill him myself." It seems that, no matter what Ash does, Jack will never QUITE forgive the initial heart breaking incident way back when.
"....you totally didn't know about that, did you." She sighed in that monotone grumble. "Damnit. Jack... you know damn well he's not forcing his way into Meredith's life. Far from it... she can't seem to keep away from HIM."
"No, I didn't," Jack said through gritted teeth. "And she can't keep away from him because she doesn't know any better. She's still a kid." Hell, he didn't even like the idea of Ash being around Lucy Van Warren. Couldn't do anything about that, though. "And if you were really there, you saw what he did to her the first time around. It can't end any better the second time around." Ash was the only person to ever really hurt her, so damn right Jack was protective. "He may have given her the ability to live again, but that doesn't make me trust or like him any better."
"You'd be surprised how much good you can find in a person when so hard to find in yourself." She said softly, kissing his cheek. "Creepy or not, Ash only wants the best for her. If I were you? I'd be more worried about the latest Bale she's spending time with. Now... HE rubs me the wrong way."
"Now which Bale kid are you talking about?" OK, he hadn't been keeping up with Mere's love life. Who COULD? She changed partners as often as...well, he did. OK, acorn not falling so far from the tree...whatever. "There's a dozen or so of them."
"Seems this one is from the future. Or 'a' future. Long story, apparently. But if this tells you anything, he's the son of Benjamin and Skylar." Because really... those two? Had reputations that practically spoke for themselves.
"Good lord," he muttered, shaking his head and looking away for a moment. "A kid from the future? What next?" This was really just too much.
"Actually? He's hardly the first. The blonde our daughter used to hang out with... Ami? She was as well." Sometimes, Louise forgot just how un-used to this stuff Jack was, despite what he'd seen.
"Wait...what?" OK, sensory overload right here. "Now I remember why I don't ask questions about this stuff usually."
"Sorry, love. But yes. She was actually the daughter of your friend Patrick. I know... long story, many headaches involved." She tried making a joke to lighten things, "Better to not think about it, lest smoke come from your ears. Besides... from what I remember, it wasn't exactly your knowledge of the supernatural that attracted me to you anyway."
"I found out about this stuff one night when someone came to me and said 'Oh, by the way, your daughter is in the hospital because she got a stake shot through her stomach.' It hasn't exactly encouraged me to learn a lot more about it since." Plus, his daughter and wife (they had never been divorced, so yeah, technically still wife) were vampires. Or Mere had been. Gah!
"I wish... I could have protected you both better than I have. If I had my way, Jack... you'd both be still blissfully any of this even exists, even if it meant you both thought I was just... gone somewhere." She sighed with a grumbling huff, having one of those rare moments where she cursed her own existence. Seeing Jack or Meredith in any kind of pain tended to do that.
"Considering where we lived, we did good fining out the way we did," Jack pointed out to her. "So many people found out by dying some way or another. We at least got to live through the process. I don't think you can live there forever and not figure out something."
"I suppose. I just hate seeing you OR Meredith in any kind of peril or suffering... it breaks whatever is left of my heart... even if that's not much." She wasn't even being dramatic there... surely and truly, she felt as though the sweet girl who'd fallen in love with Jack years ago had become as cold, unfeeling, and dead as the skin that covered her very bones.
"I hate seeing her in any sort of peril as well," Jack admitted to her. "And I think you must have more of your heart than you think. I doubt that you'd care much about us at all if you only had a little bit of a heart left."
"Heh." She smirked, that sweet, girl-next girl grin finally showing itself again. "I just still get weak in the knees when I look at you. It's my biggest weakness."
"Then you obviously have a heart if you still get weak in the knees for an idiot like me," Jack joked with her, but he felt that he sort of had a point.
"You're not an idiot, Jack. You're a good, smart, talented man. Don't ever let anyone make you think otherwise. And...." she knew this was something he'd likely never heard anyone tell him... and she'd been dying to for years. "for what it's worth? I think you've done an amazing job raising our daughter."
He smiled when she said the last part, a genuine smile, even. That was something that he had truly worried about. He had worried that he had raised a daughter who, like him, might never be able to function in a relationship. "Thank you," he said softly to her, even though he knew that she would easily be able to hear it.
"She's a strong young woman. She's become... what I kind of wished *I* was back when we met." She made a bit of a face there, as this part was clearly a sore spot with her. "Well... other than the extreme promiscuity part."
He laughed at the last part. "That's something she gets from me, plus the fear of a real committed relationship," he admitted to her.
"I really want to believe, Jack.... believe that somewhere, there's still some way we can make something work between us. Be SOME kind of family." She could barely meet his eyes then, knowing she'd fall apart and not be able to be strong if she did. "I just don't know how possible that is."
"All we can do is try, Louise," he said to her. "It's better to try and fail than to have never tried at all and always wonder what might have happened." He was more than willing to put forth the effort to try with her.
"Let me.... talk with Meredith. About a number of things. Make sure that all three of us are equally interested in this. She.... might not be as willing to forgive and forget as you are." She couldn't help but think back to the last conversation she'd had with Mere, shortly before her daughter had been turned back into a human. Mere had hugged her, and had talked to her... but it was still clearly strained.
He nodded. "She might just surprise you, though," he said to Louise. "Mere's sort of unpredictable like that. She's the only person I've ever heard of who went from human to vampire to souled vampire to back to human in the span of a year and a half."
"I guess we'll find out soon." Because she WAS going to figure this out, sooner rather than later. "For now... I should go. Before those boys come over here and either ask for your autograph or verbally hit on me. Either of which would likely result in disturbing acts of violence." She was probably kidding there. Not like anyone could tell with how she said it... "But... until next time... here's something to help you keep me in your thoughts." And before he could even ask what she was talking about, she reached up and pulled him down to her, kissing him long and hard on the lips.
He was a little started when she kissed him. He hadn't been expecting it. That didn't stop him from kissing her back for all that he was worth, though.
"I still love you, Jack. I wish so badly for BOTH of our sakes that I didn't... but I always have." She sighed, before taking off like a bolt, faster than the human eye could comfortably follow. It was as if a blur had just... streaked past his eyes.
