Not What You'd Expect
Who: Bette and Talia
Where: Shooting Star Comics
When: Sunday, April 4th
Bette had opened Shooting Star Comics this morning... yet she was still there at almost 8pm, with only another two hours until closing. And other than her usual sarcastic nature, she was still seemingly in a fine mood and condition, not even slightly tired. For a Saturday night, the store had been remarkably unbusy, so Bette (who's hair was now dark brown, and... a little longer already?)Had actually been able to organize everything, which had her in a much better mood than usual. If anything... she seemed a little off. Distracted. So for now, she sat on the counter, almost staring off into space, wearing a blue jeans-skirt and a black shirt with the Venom symbol on it.
Talia had been a little distracted herself, recently. The kind of distracted where you were just... staring into space. It occurred to her that she didn't really have any friends, and the one person that she at least conversed with hadn't been entirely honest with her. She frowned lightly as she walked into the store, clad in blue jeans and a long-sleeved plain black shirt, her blonde hair streaked with red today. "Hey," she murmured, giving Bette a small wave.
"Talia... hey." Bette gave her a smile that looked somehow pained. "I've been thinking about you, actually. How’ve you been?"
"I've had better days," Talia replied, before moving to sit on the floor behind the counter. She looked up at Bette and sighed, "Thinking about me?"
"Yeah. Missing you, actually. I haven't really talked to anyone lately." She blinked then a rapid, almost seizure-like blink, before looking back to her again. "It's been a long day."
"That's uhm..." Talia blinked and frowned lightly, before getting to her feet and reaching out to feel Bette's forehead, "are you okay?"
She had a liiiittle warmth, but mostly? Felt cool as a cucumber. She looked at the girl again, and smiled. "Talia! Hey... When did you get here? Good to see you aga...". She was cut off there by Cassie, who, in a panic literally pulled Bette into the back room. "Ohmygod Bette I'm so so sorry... I almost didn't make it in time!" For a moment or two it was quiet in the back, until finally a soft whirring noise was heard running continually. Cassie finally came out and looked at Talia. "Crap. Look. Just... Trust me. Guard that back room for a while, ok? I'm locking up so nobody can get in. Stores closed early tonight. I'll be back in an hour or two. I promise to give you ANY answers you want or need if you'll just guard that room. Try not to go in there? If ya do.. I can't really do anything about it. But please... Just don't leave Bette, ok?" She mouthed the words 'thank you' before scurrying back out, locking the door behind her.
The thing about Talia? Even the strangest things didn't seem to faze her. She blinked and nodded in agreement as Cassie made a beeline for the front door. She occupied herself for the first twenty minutes, just ambling about. But curiosity got the best of her, and she knocked on that door before slowly entering the room. "Uh, sorry if this was a bad idea..."
The sight that greeted her? Was possibly the strangest thing she could have expected: Bette, sitting on a crate near the wall, a long, industrial sized cable, coming from her back, leading to the electrical socket in the wall. "Talia... Sorry if I acted weird out there... I really didn't want you to see me like this..."
"Oh. That's okay, I, uh..." Talia closed the door behind her, pressed her back against it and slid down on to the floor. "I'm guessing you've been... Well. A year?" She was a curious creature, after all. She'd done her research on Bette.
Bette sighed, and looked at Talia. "The 'real' Bette passed away a little over a year ago. I was created by Cassie shortly after she was adopted by the Matthews family. To... help them deal with everything. We aren't entirely sure how it happened, but somehow I gained true sentience. We worry that if my battery goes completely dead it could cause me to lose that. That's why Cassie rushed in here like that."
Talia licked her lips and looked away, her crystalline blue eyes tearing slightly. It wasn't entirely for Bette, though, and she felt selfish for that. "How... how often do you have to recharge?"
"Every three days, give or take." She noted the tears, and blinked. "...what's wrong with you, T?"
Talia waved a hand airily, "it's nothing, B. It's stupid." She thought for a moment, "I'm sure I can figure out a longer battery life for you."
"Right now I think I'm more concerned with why my only friend is crying..." A sign of true feeling? Perhaps.
"Persistent bitch," Talia giggled, although it didn't have its usual playfulness. "I dunno. I just got to thinking that no one would really do that for me, if I were to... die. Kind of pathetic, huh?"
"If it matters? I would." And seriously... Robots don't really lie, do they? "I guess... I thought you were upset that I'm not 'real'..."
Talia smiled faintly at the first comment and wiped at her eyes. The second comment? "No. You're real. Actually..." She crawled forward and leaned back on her haunches beside Bette. "Do you trust me?" She asked with a sweet, mischievous grin.
"I just told you I'm a friggin' robot. I'd say I trust you." She said with a wry grin, toying with the cord absently.
Talia giggled and shook her head, before putting a hand to Bette's cheek, fingers at her temple. "Good, because this is me trusting you." Then? She closed her eyes and focused her ability, pouring her life force into Bette, a series of one's and zero's became an intense conversation, only... without words. After a few moments, she blinked and pulled away, panting. "Sorry, I tend to forget to breathe when I do that."
"That..." Bette blinked as an actual blush hit her, "that felt like what I imagine a kiss would. Wow. What the hell did you just do?"
"I just.. 'talked' to you. I guess I should have thought about the intimacies of it before doing it," Talia blushed.
"So, when I access my database, I can see that in... roughly a few weeks you'll be able to actually give me that kiss without it being considered immoral." She smirked then and shrugged. "Although really, I'm a robot, so does your age technically matter?"
Talia laughed and rolled her eyes, "I don't think age matters, honestly."
"So, got anything against plantin' one on a robot? Cuz seriously... We just had this touching moment of realization and it'd probably be a waste to not take advantage of it..." She smirked again, feigning a pout.
"I'd say you were pushing your luck if I didn't agree entirely," Talia replied, her eyes crinkling from her smile, before leaning over to kiss Bette, keeping it sweetly innocent.
"So this..." She tugged at the cord when the girl pulled back away again. "honestly doesn't freak you out? I mean, when I first came to grips with what I was, *I* was freaked out. I mean, if it helps, I'm almost totally the same as any human girl. Same 'functions' and such. Except for the whole 'going to the bathroom' thing."
Talia tilted her head to the side, giving her answer serious thought before saying: "No, it doesn't bother me. Unless you have plans for world domination, but I'm sure I'll get over that," she smirked.
"I get very... lonely." Bette admitted, shrugging. "I try to be as bitchy as possible, because I can't afford to let anyone in. If they saw... this" she gestured to the cord, "and realized what I was... I'd lose them anyway."
