Apparently He's So In Demand He Needs to Advertise
Who: Iris and Ben
Where: Avarice
When: Friday Night, 3/26
How the hell did Avarice become almost boring to Ben? Maybe because nothing else is too fun when you spend most of your time chilling with naked women. Still... he stood at his old spot at the bar, people-watching. Maybe it was a joke, maybe it was a statement of how much he loved Skylar, but he was wearing a shirt that said 'Sorry, Ladies... I'm Taken'.
Iris had come in to hang out for a while, maybe dance a little, and basically have a good time. However, when she saw Ben, and the shirt that he was wearing, she cracked up. Oh DAMN, now she had to go and talk to him. "So, it's gotten so bad that now you have to advertise that you're taken to keep the ladies away?" she asked him.
"What can I say?" He said without missing a beat, "The bitches can't keep their hands off me. And with good reason. I'm amazing in the sack. But I don't need to tell YOU that." Oh, SNAP.
She rolled her eyes. "And yet oh so humble about it," she said right back to him. He was lucky that she forgave him for his obviously horrid taste in women now. "So, other than having to advertise your takenness, how's life treating you?"
"Words can't even describe it." Not that he expected her to care, but he had to tell her anyway. She was his friend and he needed to gush, dammit. "I'm gonna be a father."
"Wow really?" Actually, she did care. She cared a lot. It was something she wanted for herself one day (kids, not to be a father, duh), plus, Ben was her friend and all. "Congrats on that!" She reached up and hugged him. "How far along is Skylar? Do you guys know?"
"Sadly? I have no idea. I wanna say about three months now? Probably? Shit. Most of my knowledge about pregnancy comes from causing it." Hey. Nobody said Ben was getting classier with time, right? "I think I'm dealing with it well though. I just need to remember the most important advice when it comes to not hurting the unborn child. 'When the woman becomes too big in the gut, it's time to put it in the butt'."
Iris cracked up, slapping Ben hard on the shoulder. "Yeah, go say that to Skylar. Pregnancy hormones and Slayer strength will be your downfall if you do," she said between giggles. For as much as she disliked the woman, both for going after her man and for what she had done to Gwen, she was the future wife of Ben, her friend, which meant the occasional sucking up of hostilities, like she did next. "Seriously, though, is she doing OK so far? I know last time hormones weren't exactly kind to her."
"Between us? It worries me. She's fine right now... but I cant say I don't fear that afterward... I might lose her." It killed him to admit it... but he did fear that. She had become his entire world, and the thought of losing her crippled him emotionally.
Iris nodded. "All I can tell you is to keep an eye on her. If it happened once, it's more likely to happen again, the postpartum depression." Although Iris personally thought the cheating might, too. Hopefully, though, more for Ben's sake, Skylar had found the person she was meant to be with. "At least now you know what to look for."
"I stood by her once... got her through it..." He said, thinking back to how technically, that finally brought them together. "Hopefully... it doesn't happen again. But if it does? Rest assured I'll do whatever it takes to keep her. You all like to make fun of her.. but she's my everything, Iris."
"I may not like her, but she makes you happy, and that's what's really important as far as you're concerned," Iris pointed out to him. "Honestly, I'll probably never really like her. She hurt me and someone who's become a friend of mine. I might occasionally wish that all her hair falls out or something, but I don't really want anything serious to happen to her, especially if she's going to be the mother of your child."
"I just... I never thought I'd have a kid, you know?" And then, because come on, this was still Ben, "at least not one I knew about. She's gonna pull through this. I know it."
Iris nodded. "I'm sure she'll be fine." She was trying to be reassuring, anyway. "Like I said, just keep an eye on her."
"Damn right. I'd give up everything to take care of her if I had to. EVERYTHING, Iris." He said with a serious, determined grin. "I wanted her for far too long to ever give up on her now."
"Then I bet things will be fine." Iris knew that even Gwen seemed to finally be moving on, although she wasn't sure how she'd take Skylar being pregnant again, though. Still, it seemed like the world was settling, at least in their inner circle.
