Still Working on the 'Making Friends' Thing
Who: Jamie and Jason
Where: Regan High School Cafeteria
When: Thursday, 3/19, lunch time
Jamie sat at a table in the cafeteria, writing in her notebook as her lunch sat mostly untouched. She wasn't one to do anything like eat a high school's meatloaf, but she had forgotten to pack her own lunch this morning, so she had to eat something...eventually. She wasn't really giving any mind to the people that passed by. She wasn't nerdy enough to attract much in the way of teasing, but she certainly wasn't popular enough to have anyone try to sit with her a lot, either.
Meanwhile, Jason was finding himself in a bit of a conundrum. He'd amicably broken things off with Cassie Allen, which he didn't really regret. She was a sweet, attractive girl, but truly didn't have a lot in common. Plus, well... it really WAS like social suicide. The problem was... he wasn't 'into' the uber-popular girls. Most of them, like Camille, were either airheads, pure evil, or something in between. Hell... maybe he just needed to find someone that he connected with, on every level, and stop caring what others thought. One way or the other, he couldn't help but look as he passed Jaime. Come on... regardless of how popular or not she was: girl looks like THAT? Guys tend to know who she is. He'd always enjoyed looking at her now and then... but he'd never taken the time to actually talk to her. Why not now, hm? Hands in the pockets of his jeans, he walked toward her, giving that bright smile. "Hey... mind if I sit here?"
Jamie looked up at him. She tended to keep her head buried in a book or her notebook in this place, mostly just ready to get out of here, even though she had a while yet just because. She looked up at him and gave him a slight smile. "Sure, go ahead," she said to him.
He didn't bother introducing himself, because while not cocky, he wasn't DUMB. Everyone in school knew who he was. "Jaime, right?"
"Yeah," she said with a nod. She actually only knew vaguely who he was. She really *didn't* pay any attention to anyone around her. She had only learned who Camille was recently, actually.
"So, uh..." He sat down, raising an eyebrow as he watched how intently she seemed involved in her work. "Whatcha working on?"
"Oh...I'm ah...I'm trying to become a writer, actually," she said to him. "Kind of odd, I guess, but it's something that I want to do. I'm actually hoping to send a few chapters to a publisher soon and see if they're actually worth anything."
"A writer, really?" He asked, a little impressed. He'd figured more that she'd... be a model, or an actress or something. "I just found out I got a football scholarship to USC... so I guess I know what I'm trying to do with my life..."
"Congratulations," she said to him with a small smile. "And, as far as a writer goes, well, I'm trying, anyway. I might end up waiting tables for the next twenty years while I try to put together the next big thing. I'm hoping that doesn't happen, though."
"I doubt that. You're a smart girl, and way too good looking to end up waiting tables." Did he catch Camille giving him a dirty look across the caf? Hm. Possibly. Oh well.
Oh, Camille did shoot him a dirty look, but Jamie didn't notice at all. However, she wasn't quite as holy!worship enamored with Jason, either. She was a mildly jaded person, after all, even before Luke messed with her brain. "I'm sure plenty of pretty girls have thought that and ended up waiting tables for the rest of their lives," she pointed out.
"Well, true. Guess I can't argue there. Still... " He looked at her, and figured, 'what the hell?'... "You wanna grab some coffee after school or anything?"
She stared at him for a moment. "Are you serious?" she asked him. She didn't mean it in a mean way, just in a slightly bewildered way.
"Well, yeah. Just figured we could get to know each other better." He shrugged, brushing his slight bangs out of his eyes. "I mean, if ya got something better to do, it's cool..."
"Sorry, that sounded kind of mean, didn't it?" Jamie asked. "I've kind of had a bad recent run of relationships, so I'm a little guarded," she admitted to him. "I'd be OK with coffee." He was out in the daylight, and the alarms in her head that she now was starting to learn to listen to weren't going off in a supernatural sense, so she figured she was OK, at least on that front. Anything else, she could defend herself against easily.
"Cool. And at least then, I won't have the Ghost of Girlfriends Past glaring at us." He nodded his head toward where Camille sat. "I think she tries not to start anything at the Sugar Shack, mostly because Lucy Van Warren has some big-ass biker friend that comes in there, that looks like he could eat Camille for dinner and not even think about it."
Jamie actually laughed at that, having seen the biker there from time to time. He stood out like a sore thumb, but, with the way that she had seen him around Lucy, he made her think of more of a teddy bear than an actual scary guy. She bet that he'd mess up anyone that messed with Lucy, though. And yeah, even Jamie who kept her head buried knew who Lucy Van Warren was, but that was more for music than school stuff. "Your ex might still have a thing for you, if she's looking at us that hard."
"Sometimes I think it's more that I broke up with her. I think she can't take being the one who was 'dumped', you know? But I can't help it.. she's beautiful, but I've had better conversations with the family dog."
Jamie laughed a little. "So she'd make a great model then? All looks and no substance?" Yeah, Jamie had no respect for someone who made a living by being a human coat rack. What do you want?
"Pretty much. She's just too mean, too. Just because you're more popular than some of the geekier kids doesn't mean we gotta pick on them, you know?" He asked, still feeling bad for how mean she'd been to Cassie.
Jamie nodded. Theoretically, she understood. Just because she could go and kick the crap out of most bikers didn't mean that she did it, after all. "She's really not bright at all. She said something to the girl that got into Cal Tech the other day that was just hilarious. Something about 'I didn't realize they let people come to American schools who didn't speak English' or something ridiculous like that."
"Well, enough of her. People talk about her enough... we don't need to waste our time together doing the same." He smirked, looking at the clock, dreading having algebra next. "So what's your book about?"
"It's about a vampire hunter, actually," Jamie said to him. "Kind of like a Van Helsing, but much younger." And possibly based on someone who talked to her in a church, but that was OK, too.
"Sounds kinda cool..." He said, still blissfully unaware of vampires, an completely clueless as to how close his previous mun was to having him get severely fucked up by one.
"Hopefully it will turn out good enough for someone to actually want to publish it," Jamie said. She had already shown it to Kayla, who seemed to like it well enough.
"Well... maybe when we have more time, you'd let me check part of it out?" He smiled, finding that he liked, well, just the sound of her voice. It was more soothing, more sweet, than he'd imagined.
She nodded. "Sure, that's cool. I'm not one of those who freak out and won't let anyone read before it's done." She was more than willing to share her stuff, after all.
"Well... bell's gonna go off soon. Meet me at The Sugar Shack after school?" He asked, giving her a quick (hopefully subtle) once-over.
"Sure," she said to him. "See you there after school then." Wow, who knew, she might actually have a circle of friends soon enough.
