Making a Friend
Who: Kayla and Jamie
Where: Avarice
When: Wednesday, 3/10, Evening
Jamie herself wasn't terribly sure what she was doing at Avarice. She certainly wasn't dressed like any of the girls in her regular t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. While they were out on the dance floor, grinding up against other people, Jamie was sitting at the bar, sipping at a coke. It just wasn't her style to do things like that. Nope, instead she occasionally wrote things down in a notebook that she was carrying, almost as if she was observing natural teenage behavior which she so lacked, sometimes. Ugh. She had gone out tonight to be like a normal person, and instead she was sitting on the sidelines, watching, like usual. No wonder she had been easy prey. Still, she wasn't exactly adept at going out and just asking someone to dance or anything.
Since she was now working at Saints and Sinners, Kayla had more free time than she was used to. Which meant … going outdoors and, my God, hanging out with her friends. That hardly happened anymore. She grinned a little to herself as she plopped down on a stool next to Jamie. She hadn’t been that physically active outside of the bedroom since… well, since she’d met Deanna. She ordered a water and looked at the girl beside her, a blonde who was… erm… blonde. That smile of hers just widened as she tried to remember her words, “Seems a little counterproductive to be studying here,” she said conversationally.
Jamie actually jumped when Kayla said something to her. She hadn't realized that someone else had sat down next to her. Quickly shutting the book, she said, "Oh, it's not for school. It's personal type stuff," she said, blushing a little.
“Like a journal? I promise I won’t look if you’d rather keep it to yourself. I’m a woman of my word,” Kayla said, moving her mouth to the side. She wasn’t a liar, after all. Although… again, blonde… and my god, pretty… it was amazing she kept the conversation this long, honestly. Blame the alcohol intake.
"Yeah, kind of like a journal." It was observations, which was also like a journal, so there. She turned a little so that she was actually looking at Kayla. "I'm Jamie, by the way." That was a way to be normal. Introducing herself.
“Kayla,” the brunette replied, offering her hand for the customary introductory handshake.
“It’s a bit, erm… odd to be writing that here, don’t you think?” She wasn’t trying to mean, or anything, more than anything, she was making a casual observation.
Jamie shook her hand. "A little, but, well, I'm kind of weird like that," she said with a lop sided smile. "Besides, not much of a dancer."
“No, me neither,” Kayla admitted with a chuckle. “Although I guess being here is better being home alone. Or, with a terrible roommate,” she laughed, since yes, she still lived in the dorm room, even though Deanna said she could move in with her. Why she hadn’t was a mystery.
"Well, I'd be home with parents, which is almost as bad as a bad roommate," Jamie joked. Don't get her wrong: she loved her parents dearly. Still, they worried A LOT. Not that they didn't have a reason to, though.

Kayla moved her mouth to the side and rolled her eyes, “it’s kind of fun to watch people though, try to guess what kind of personalities they have. Like that guy?” She pointed to Brayden Bale, young, with a cocky grin. “Thinks he’s The Shit. Probably gets laid a lot. I bet he has an Oedipus complex.”
Jamie laughed. Wow someone in LA who even knew what that was? Most people in her school probably thought that was a Std or something! "There's no telling what personality problems some of these people have." She pointed to a blond girl. (Camille Blake) That one probably has massive self esteem issues and tries to cover it by sleeping with any boy who moves." Sadly, Jamie kept to herself so much that she didn't realize who she was pointing to.
Kayla wrinkled her nose cutely and laughed, “Okay, I like that.” She ordered herself another beer and sipped at it thoughtfully, “Okay, so what about me then? First impressions. And you can be as totally cruel as you want, I can take it.”
Jamie mulled on that for a moment. "Well my first guess is that you are a musician or involved in the music scene somehow." She also had the distinct idea that the girl was gay for some reason, but didn't say that. "I'm also guessing free spirit. Maybe moves around a lot?"
"I said be cruel, not eerily accurate," Kayla replied, smirking. "Okay, maybe not so much with the moving, but I'm not the type to sit still, either." Unless she aas depressed, but she hadn't been in a while, so... "That's a good skill you've got there."
"I'm kind of a people watcher" Jamie admitted to her. "I'm not always great with 'being' around people, so I tend to sit back and sort of watch lives go by instead." Kind of sad when she said it out loud. "Try guessing stuff about me now."
"Hrmh. I'm guessing you're intelligent... and lonely. Maybe few friends, or none at all. It's not to say that you don't prefer your own company, sometimes," Kayla murmured. "I bet you could handle yourself in a fight, or maybe that's just wishful thinking."
"Supposedly I can handle myself in a fight," Jamie added. Still, she nodded. Kayla had gotten her pretty damn right. "I'm not exactly rolling in the friends, no."
"Is that a personal choice? 'Cause honestly, you don't seem all that shy." Aw, this was Kayla being nice, how sweet.
"I'm getting better at the shy part," Jamie admitted. "It's not a personal choice so much as a circumstance, I guess?"
"What? All of the kids at your school are dicks?" Kayla laughed. "Or are they just not engaging?" My, wasn't she just full of questions?
"A little of column A, a little of column B," she said after thinking about it. Jamie never had gotten along with people her age very well, after all.
Kayla moved her mouth to the side and ‘hrmh’d thoughtfully. “Well, I like you.” She blurted out. Maybe she was spending too much time with Deanna lately… “Well,” she blushed furiously, “I don’t think you should completely disregard people your own age. … Sometimes, they’ll surprise you.”
"I've been told that before," Jamie said about not disregarding people her own age. "There's one or two I know that aren't too bad." It was just hard to put forth the effort to know them when they were going to be gone in two months.
“Well, there’s a start,” Kayla said with a cheerful grin, before polishing off her beer and asking the cute blonde behind the bar for another one with a wink. “I was pretty hyperactive as a kid, so I basically made friends with everyone.” She laughed. “But, only the really good ones stay for the long haul.”
"Well I'd rather have one or two good friends than hang around a bunch of people that I couldn't depend on," Jamie admitted. She didn't want to say it out loud because it sounded desperate and sad, but Kayla seemed like a very dependable person. That could be Jamie's desperate need to trust people though.
“I hear that,” Kayla replied, scrunching her nose. Jamie’s assessment of her had been correct, but shh… let them come to that themselves. “I’m guessing you’re still in high school, yeah? What’s your favorite subject?”
Jamie nodded. "English actually. I want to be a writer, so that and history are really all I'm good at." She tended to daydream in her other classes.
“That’s pretty cool. I wish I had the patience to do that. Do you have a specific genre you like to write?” This was Kayla genuinely interested in what Jamie had to say.
"Supernatural stuff actually," Jamie said with a laugh. Of course with Luke's recent leaving, she had trashed a story loosely based on him and had moved on to writing about a handsome man who was also a vampire hunter. Hmm...wonder who THAT was based on. "I know I can do better than Anne Rice and people swear by her stuff." Jamie was willing to bet that Anne Rice wouldn't know a vampire until it was chewing on her neck.
“Anne Rice overly romanticizes her work, I think. Plus, I don’t see the appeal of being cold and statuesque and basically raping people for food. I always thought Van Helsing was more interesting.” Kayla blinked and let out a throaty chuckle. “That’s just my opinion, anyway.”
"All valid points that I agree with," Jamie said, silently adding 'now' as well. "What I'm working on now is actually about a vampire hunter, although he's a little younger than Van Helsing."
“Ooooh, that sounds interesting. Do I get details, or is a ‘work in progress’ kind of thing?” Kayla smirked and briefly wondered what Jamie would do if she came across a vampire. Probably not scream like a girl and run away….
Actually Jamie had shoved a stick through the vampire's chest and, once she realized everyone was OK, promptly fainted, but that was neither here nor there. "Well I don't have it with me right now, but if you'd like to see it I can show it to you."
“Yeah, absolutely. Just give me then when and where of it and I’ll be there. Kayla blinked and then grinned brilliantly, “unless you meant now?”
"How about we just meet up at Chloe's Sugar Shack and I show you there?" Jamie suggested. An easy place to meet and read with no strange implications like taking Kayla home to show Kayla her work, right?
“I think I’d prefer that,” Kayla agreed, rubbing the back of her neck thoughtfully. She hadn’t thought about the strange implications until just then, and blushed furiously. “I’m free most afternoons.” Especially now that she had a new job. Yay!
"As long as we're talking after school, then so am I," Jamie said. She did her training in the mornings, so her afternoons were fine.
"Oh yeah. Student too, here," Kayla replied, oddly doing jazz hands for emphasis. She and Gabriel hadn't figured out a training schedule yet, but... Soon, they would. With summer coming up, she'd have more time for it, fortunately.
"So, how about tomorrow afternoon then? Say, around four?" Jamie asked. She would be out of school by then, and, well, she went to Chloe's Sugar Shack after school more often than not, anyway, so it wasn't like it would be much different for her to go there tomorrow. It would just be different that she would actually be waiting on someone.
"That sounds perfect," Kayla replied, giving the blonde a sweet grin. It would be nice to
socialize with someone new, Kayla thought.
"Great. See you then!" Jamie replied with a smile. It was nice to finally make a friend.
