Just Say NO to Burning the Hoff
Who: Lucy and Kevin
Where: Van Warren Home
When: Wednesday, 3/10
In the last few days, Kevin Van Warren had run the gamut of emotions. He'd gone from severe, mind-numbing depression, to shock, to disbelief, to acceptance, to his current state: total, unflinching happiness. He wasn't sure how the hell his sister had been brought back, or how almost everyone suddenly forgot she was ever gone... but right now? He didn't much care, either. He just sat there, in their living room, trying not to stare at his little sister, just letting it all process again. "I still can't believe you're back, Luce.... seriously.... I don't understand it at all. But I guess, really... all I need to know is that this is for good."
"If you keep staring at me, I'm going to start wondering about you, brother dear," Lucy said with a big smirk on her face. "Yeah, this is for good. I don't think people would go through the trouble of bringing me back if it was only for like, two weeks, you know?"
"I don't pretend to know how any of this works, Lucy!" He laughed, that girlish giggle back again. "The extent of my knowledge is you're dating a warlock, I'm dating a slayer, our sister is a REALLY crappy witch, and apparently I'm now under the protection of some kind of demon that used to be a really terrible person."
Lucy's eyes went wide. "Wow, you know more than me, apparently. When did you get under the protection of a demon?" she asked him.
"Funny story there, really. This kind of happened right before you... you know. When you had gotten really busy." A nice way of saying 'during the time when your previous mun had way better shit to do than play you'. "Remember Paige? She's apparently some kind of demon that protects people now. Since she messed with us so bad, me and Lexi are both under her protection now. Which explains why neither of us gleefully forgot you died."
"Well, that's weird. And good that she's not running around trying to kill people anymore," Lucy said. "Still kind of weird, though. How does that work? How does her protecting you let you keep your highly unpleasant memories of my demise?"
"I think it prevented anyone from mucking up our memories. Even if was meant to be a good thing." He said, having come to that conclusion himself.
Lucy nodded slowly. "Not sure if that's a good thing or not, at least in this case," she admitted. It was kind of easier to be around most of the people when they didn't remember that she was gone, after all. "How are you doing now?"
"Now? Tired. Exhausted. But happier than I've ever been in my LIFE." He leaned across the sofa, just giving her the most heartrending, loving hug EVER.
She hugged him back. "I definitely think exhausted is the right word for it," she agreed with him. All of this running around and occasionally getting pounced was tiring to a girl, after all!
"I'm... gonna start trying to be a little easier on Ash. I know how important he is to you. And while I might find him creepy, I know he's good t you." He admitted, trying to make her as happy as possible.
"Good! You should be," Lucy said, crossing her arms over her chest. "He's not going to do anything bad to me, after all. Now, if someone hurts me again, or even thinks about it, then I feel sorry for them, but he's not going to do anything bad to me!"
"I know. I think I get freaked out because he's a little older. But Chloe keeps reminding me that it's only three years." He sighed, trying hard to be totally honest with her. "You're just my kid sister, you know? When you're 40, you'll still be my baby sister."
"Ugh, don't want to think about being 40, OK?" Lucy said to him, although now she had the chance to be just that, which was good. "Besides, you're a few years older than Buffy, right? It's the same thing."
"It really is." He had to admit... the girl had a point. "I'm trying to tell you, I guess, that I love you. And I trust you. And I'm gonna try to lay off him for you."
"And I love you, too! My darling big brother!" She reached across and hugged him again. "And trust is a good thing. Just like I trusted you to get your head on straight and get rid of Irene. See? I had trust that you would do better for yourself, and you totally did!" Lucy's eyes widened and she covered her mouth. "Oh my GOD! Did I say that out loud?" she asked behind her hand.
"Hah hah. You and Chloe didn't like Irene because her band was semi-feuding with Suicide Messiah at the time. Let's not screw around." Sure, Irene cheated on him... but honestly: Chloe and Lucy had already decided not to like her WELL before then.
"True, but that doesn't make me wrong anyway," Lucy said, sticking out her tongue at him. "So there." Maybe she had decided that already. And maybe it was weird that he picked out Buffy, Ash's ex, but who could help it?
"The look on your face when you first realized me and Buffy were together was priceless, for the record." Oh, how he wished he could have recorded that moment for posterity. "So...." he had to ask. HAD to. "um... are you gonna be ok? Living here again? Because Chloe wants to invite Courtney to live here. And I don't want things to be weird. Should I tell Chloe not to ask her?"
"Yeah, well, you could have at least shot everyone a warning on that one," Lucy said to him. "Still, I approve, so it's OK." She thought on the second thing for a moment. Was she OK with Courtney living here? With her? God, that would be weird. "No, don't tell Chloe to do that," she said finally. Right now she was staying with someone that she didn't even know, since Mere seemed to have no inclination toward going anywhere that wasn't around them as of late.
"We just... honestly, right now? Our main concern is making sure YOU feel comfortable and peaceful. God knows you've been through a lot lately..." He said with a furrowed brow.
"You know what would make me feel super great?" Lucy asked. "If you guys let me stay with Ash. I know that, you know, I'm all sixteen and he's older, but he takes good care of me, and NOTHING would get to me there. Just think on it before you like, totally say no and forever no."
Oh, did Kevin want to yell at her. Scream 'oh HELL no!'. But... Dammit, she had a point. Maybe if she'd been under Ash's watch LAST time, he'd have been killed instead of his little sister. And the guilt he still felt there was what sealed his answer. "...no idea how you're gonna get Chloe, mum, and dad to agree... But... dammit, just don't go getting pregnant, ok?"
She briefly looked away when he said 'don't get pregnant' knowing of the girl going to her high school now was actually her daughter to be born in about two years. Yay fun there! "Well, I can talk to Chloe, and I know someone that can talk to mom and dad for me." She smiled brightly at him. Once she got ONE person on her side, that meant that others might come as well.
"I saw that look, Luce! Nobody said Courtney has to be born yet in THIS reality!" Ok, so he didn't wanna think of his kid sister being sexually active. Shut up. "And hell yes you're talking to Chloe. This is YOUR battle. You can face the eruption of Mount Van Warren on yer own."
"Oh yeah, like you got room to talk. Did anyone tell you about Buffy and your kid yet?" she asked him, in the typical 'blurt it out' fashion that she had. "And I said that I'd talk to Chloe, Kevin. You worry to much, anyway!"
"Wait... Buffy and I WHAT?" His face went comically pale there, as he started to put two and two together: the 'friend of Dawns' who'd been spending so much time there...
"Yeah, Ash and Cassie told me about her," Lucy said to him. "She's apparently a lot like Chloe and me in the hyperness."
"Wait... Buffy and I WHAT?" His face went comically pale there, as he started to put two and two together: the 'friend of Dawns' who'd been spending so much time there..."....then that means..." Yeah, all that talk about 'alternate reality' went riiiiight out the window. "Me and Buffy..." Aw, he was grinning all proudly now...
"Oh, so when it's my kid, we're talking alternate reality, but when it's yours, you get a goofy grin on your face and stop talking," Lucy said. "You are such a goober, you know that?"
"Well... you'd be the authority there, kiddo." He laughed, ruffling her hair again. "God its great to have you back. I was so upset I almost burned The Hoff in effigy."
"NO! You can't burn The Hoff! He's what's protecting you, remember?" she pointed out.
"Fear not... The Hoff is fine." He giggled, shaking his head. "We're gonna do something together. You and Ash and me and Buffy. You need to get to know each other better."
"Well, Buffy and Ash know each other pretty well," Lucy pointed out. "What you need to do is get to know Ash a lot better." What? She had a point!
"I'll tell ya what: I'll make an effort to get to know him better if you'll do the same with Buffy." Hey, he was trying here!!!
She nodded. "OK, I'll be nice and get to know Buffy then." She really had no problem with it. After all, she knew that Ash was with her and Buffy really wanted to be with Kevin. So, things should work out OK now."
