Homeroom
Who: Janie OT All
Where: Reagan High School
When: Tuesday Morning

Janie was in a pretty good mood. The previous night she found out she got into college. What was better than that news, was that she was awarded a partial scholarship with work study.

That meant she could move out of the apartment, go to college AND have a job. It was everything she wanted. She sat through homeroom, grinning like a fool.

Then the announcements started. Someone thought it would be smart to tell the ENTIRE school that she'd been accepted to Cal-Tech and awarded a scholarship. That meant people would know she spoke English. Hopefully no one paid attention.

The time traveler tried to shrink into her desk, hoping her jeans and white tank top somehow made her blend into the class more.

Camille turned around from her desk and looked toward Janie. "I thought you had to speak English to go to an American school," she said. Sure, they could do an exchange program in high school, but no one cared what you did in high school. It was college classes that really mattered, which meant you had to speak English to get into them, right? Made more than enough sense to her, anyway.

Janie froze for a second. She couldn't smile and nod, pretending that she had no idea what was said.

"Did I say that? Uh. I meant that I didn't speak Dutch. Not at all..."

Would that work? It had to, because she'd just said it, no matter how lame it was.

"But none of us speak Dutch, so why would that matter at all?" Camille asked her. Really, who was this girl kidding, anyway?

"It doesn't." Janie admitted "I lied, I speak perfect English. I always have. Too bad you fell for it."

Camille narrowed her eyes at Janie. "I knew you were a liar. They don't let people into American schools who can't speak English," she said, turning back around in her chair. Really, the nerve of some people.

"ESL programs are for students in 'American' schools who don't speak English. Everyone is going to know you fell for it because you aren't considered to be that bright. You should be glad you only have two months left of school."

Janie really tried hard not to laugh, but she found Camille's reaction funny.

Whether or not Camille had known about that (she hadn't) didn't really matter, in her opinion. It was more that she *thought* that you shouldn't be allowed in an American school if you didn't speak English. That's what mattered to her. Ignoring what the girl had said, though, she leaned across the isle and started to talk with one of her friends, instead. Let the lowly one think she had the last word. Whatever.

After Camille had her say, for what it was worth (and not a whole lot), Jamie tapped Janie on her shoulder from the seat behind her. "Congratulations," she said to Janie with a smile. "I think Cal-Tech is very impressive, especially to get a scholarship."

"Thanks Jamie!" The other girl smiled "I think I will have a party on Friday. Do you want to come? It should be fun."

"Sure, sounds great," Jamie said to her, smiling. Wow, she was actually making friends and getting invited to parties. She was actually doing good for herself lately. Screw Luke and his vampire-ness!

"It's next Friday night at Chloe's Sugar Shack around nine or ten. Do you know where that is?" Janie was really happy, she'd have a couple more guests at her party and she might make a new friend.

Jamie nodded. "Yeah, I've been there a few times." The drinks were sugary and delicious. Why *wouldn't* she go there, after all?

"That's wonderful! I can't wait, and the party will be a lot of fun! you can bring anyone you would like to it! You are Jamie, correct?"

She hoped she had the name of her classmate correct.

"I'm JAnie, but you know that, correct? The announcement..."

"Yep, that would be me," Jamie said to her with a smile. "I know you're Janie, and I understand wanting to pretend that you don't speak English when it's mostly girls like her around," she said, pointing discretely in Camille's direction.

"It was easy, and you're right... some of the people here I want no association with at all."

She knew Jamie was pointing to Camille but had no idea why she was discrete. The girl had to know that people didn't like her.

"Not you. Because you seem nice. I wish I'd talked to you more."

Jamie was discrete because that was just more of who she was. "Well, you're talking to me now, so that has to count for something, right?"
