Stubbornness
Who: Mere and Ash
Where: Ash's House
When: Thursday, Feb. 11 (the night of Lucy's funeral)
Mere drove up to Ash's house the night of Lucy's funeral. She figured that he wouldn't go, since he was being 'I'm not going around people anymore' right now, and, well, Mere couldn't walk into a church, due to the whole 'I'm a vampire' thing. So, she figured that, whether he liked it or not, he could use company, even if he barred her from entrance like she sort of figured he would. She got out of the car and opened the door, testing the barrier with her hand and, yep, couldn't get it. "Nice, Ash, real nice," she said from across the barrier. "Doesn't mean that I won't talk to you through this damn barrier, and my voice can carry all through this house.
"Talk all you want, Meredith." Ash's voice sounded dark, like shadows and death somehow rolled into one dismal package. "I don't know what you hope to accomplish, but darkness only lasts so many hours.
"Well, right now we've got plenty," Mere said to him. She had come just after sunset, after all. "Well, for whatever you care, which I doubt you do right now, but everyone's worried about you. You're sister is completely freaked out, which isn't good for the baby, you know." She sat down on the front step, facing the doorway. "Ben's threatening to kill you if you somehow manage to hurt Skylar, not that I know why you would, but you know how he is about her." She sighed. "For what it's worth, and again, I suspect not much, I told him I'd break off his trigger finger if he came near you with a gun."
"After the part he took in hurting Gwen.... I would welcome the chance to break him in half myself. Let him come." Uh-oh. Ash had only sounded quite like this ONCE before. And that time, there were cracks. Glimmers of what he used to be. This? Sounded like total, unflinching badness.
"Well, right now I'd rather you both stay away from one another, thanks," she told him. She didn't mention that he told her to talk to Devon about her evident feelings for Ash, but, well, that was a fruitless endeavor in Mere's eyes, anyway. "Figured I should tell you just the same."
"Soon... either Lucy will be back or I will be gone. One way or the other... I'll be with her again and you can all forget about me." Not that he was going to reveal his master plan though. Ash may have been going evil... but he was still no Bond Villain. "Leave me alone, Meredith. The Ash you knew... no longer exists."
Mere rolled her eyes. "You are so fucking overdramatic it's painful," she pointed out. "And look at me not leaving here, Ash. Not going to until you invite me in or the sun comes up. And what the hell do you mean by Lucy being here or you being gone? You talking alternate dimensions or something?" After her conversation with Courtney, it had given her the idea.
"Don't worry about what I'm talking about. You, your friends, none of you are my concern anymore. GO. AWAY." A window actually exploded as he emphasized the last two words.
Luckily, Mere wasn't sitting near a window. "What the fuck is it going to take for you to realize that I'm not. GOING. TO. LEAVE. YOU. ALONE?" Mere asked, her own eyes glowing like an animal's when she said those last words. "Kill me if you want to, but I'm not going away."
"Why can't you just take a hint, Delany?" He yelled, getting clearly aggravated, but at least some emotion was becoming evident.
"Because apparently I'm a fucking idiot," she said, more to herself, but it was loud enough for him to hear just the same. "I'm a fucking idiot who loves a madman." Fuck did she know how to choose them, eh? "Because I care about you, you jackass, or can you not get that through your thick skull? I'm not leaving you alone, because you shouldn't be left alone. And I'll track you down to the ends of whatever earth you end up on if I have to, OK?"
"Meredith.... I would rather not harm you. But that doesn't mean I won't." He stopped there, as if remembering something he DID want to tell her. "Leave. And give a message to Chloe and Kevin. Tell them Lucy has been avenged. Her killer is destroyed."
"Well, that's a good thing to hear," Mere said about Lucy's killer being gone. "Did the bitch even say why?"
"She was too busy screaming." He said simply. "I showed her the TRUE meaning of pain and suffering." The thought of Ash, who'd been trying so hard to toe the line and be good... torturing and maiming anyone, even a vampire, was heartbreaking. "And I relished every moment."
She simply sighed. He really did seem beyond helping at this point, but to admit to that would basically be some sort of death sentence for him, and, well, everyone else, possibly, so she just couldn't give up. "Why are you doing this, Ash?" she asked him, her voice getting soft. "Not killing the vampire, separating yourself from everyone. Why?"
"I can't do it anymore, Meredith. Lose the ones I love. She was my light, don't you get it? She was what held back.... this. God let her be taken from me... and now? I'll either get her back...." his voice grew darker as he finally appeared in front of her, just beyond the barrier. His eyes were complete onyx, his face twisted into a hateful sneer. "Or I will find the power to destroy not only a world... but God himself."
She took a deep breath and stood up, facing him, not shaking somehow or another. She wasn't sure how she could face him like this, but she was now. Maybe she was a stronger person than she used to be. Who knew? "Lucy wouldn't want you to be doing this, Ash. This is the last thing she would want. For you to want to destroy the world over her."
"You think I want to destroy the world?" He asked, as if surprised by her assumption. "You misunderstand me, Meredith. I will either find a way to get her back.... or I will overtake God himself and BRING her back to me."
"And probably destroy the place in the process Ash," Mere pointed out to him. "Lucy is not in this world anymore. Bringing her here could damage our dimension beyond repair." As if it wasn't already that way, but she was trying here.
"...then she and I will be together again even sooner." He used a blast of magic to throw her a few feet backward, scowling. "Now leave. I have work to do, and your incessant prattling is not helping."
She stumbled back and fell on the ground. "I'll leave, for now," she said simply to him, getting herself up off the ground and brushing herself off. "This isn't over, though."
"Yes." He replied, slamming the door shut. "It is."
"You'd be amazed at how stubborn I can be Ash," Mere said to the door, then turning and walking away.
