Hoping This Isn't a Bad Thing
Who: Skylar and Rachelle
Where: The Sugar Shack
When: Friday, Feb. 12
Skylar had gotten a frantic voice mail from Rachelle, and she had no clue what to make of it, or what Rachelle would do if she didn't' comply and come to the Sugar Shack. While she felt a little strange going in, expecting Lucy to come bouncing out of the back any minute, she came inside and looked around for Rachelle in hopes of calming the girl down as soon as she saw her.
Within minutes, Rachelle stormed in, looking not unlike the day she'd come in pissed off about Neely and Meeghan. Only difference? This time, the look on her face was shock, not anger. The girl wore her favorite Docs, dark blue carpenters jeans, and a baggy 'Ed Belfour' Chicago Blackhawks jersey. "....hey...."
"Hey," Skylar said to her. "Would you like to tell me what's going on and what that message you left me meant?" she asked Rachelle. "You've got me worried about you."
"Skylar? I need to ask you something. IMPORTANT." She sat down, taking a deeeeep breath. "When Ben asked you to marry him.... how did you know, deep down inside, that his womanizing days were over?"
She shrugged. "I don't know, I just kind of knew. He swore to me that all that he'd ever wanted was me, which I kind of knew, you know? And I haven't even seen him truly *look* at another woman since, and we own a strip club. Why do you ask?"
"Dude." She looked shell shocked, not unlike someone who'd just come home from war. "When... when we got home from Lucy's funeral... we started talking about how important we were to each other... and... Neely.... ohmygod.... she asked me to marry her, Skylar."
Skylar arched an eyebrow at her. "Really?" She almost thought that it might be too soon for them, and then remembered sort of showing Ben that he could ask her to marry her so very quick after they got together, and kept her mouth shut on that. "So, what did you say?"
"I... I told her yes, but on the condition that if in a few days, she decides that she asked in panic because of the funeral, she can take it back." Chelle ran a hand through her hair, taking a long, ragged breath.
Skylar nodded. "Well, I hope she doesn't freak and think that she asked in a panic," she said to Rachelle. "I don't think she did, personally. You guys can always have a long engagement if you think you need to take some time."
"I've been in love with the dipshit since the first time we hung out together, Skylar." Ah yes. And who says romance is dead? "I'd marry her TODAY, really. I... I think she's seriously ready to be MINE. But I'm giving her that window, just in case."
"Then what are you so worried about if you think she's ready to be yours and just yours then?" Skylar asked her.
"I'm just shocked. I mean... ME!" She made a waving motion over her own body. "Neely was like... like BEN! And all of a sudden she's faced with losing ME and suddenly decides to be a one-woman girl? What the hell's so special about me???"
"You're either blind or stupid to ask that," Skylar pointed out. "You're a good looking girl, and don't even try to argue with me on that, you've got a great personality, you're talented, so what DOESN'T make you a good catch again?"
"Dude... I ain't sayin' I'm not attractive, but she's like Ben: she's had some of the hottest chicks AROUND. I'm just... a foul-mouthed tomboy, you know? It's just... it warps my mind to think she could love me THAT much." It occurred to her that she was making it sound like she was dissing Ben, and gave an apologetic wince.
Skylar just shook her head. "Then you apparently have something that none of those other girls had if she wants to be with you and only you, and that includes anyone you might be worried about."
"Yeah. About that." She sighed, shaking her head. "Look. If Meeghan presses charges against me, it's cool. But unless SHE wants to leave, I don't want you making it a her-or-me thing. I ain't saying she was RIGHT, but I still overreacted. I've... been seeing a lot of things differently since Lucy died, Skylar." The redhead sighed again, trying to keep herself from sniffling again. "I wanna be the type of person SHE would be, if she was here."
Skylar nodded, reaching across the table and giving Rachelle's hand a squeeze. "I think we might be able to talk her down from pressing charges, but I'm not sure about that. If something happens with that, we can get you lawyers and get you a decent deal, but I'm sure you'll have to do a ton of community service." If she was lucky, she wouldn't have to spend any time in jail. "Still, I'm glad you said that we don't have to kick her off the label. I was willing to for you, but I'm glad I don't have to."
"I guess... it's not my place to say that. It's BEN'S label. I'm nobody to sit here and make demands of him, no matter who I'm friends with. Forgive me for putting you in that spot?" She asked, more or less trying to think WWLD?
"It's alright, Rachelle," Skylar said to her with a slight smile on her face. "Like I said, it's a decision that I would have made in your favor, but I'm very, very glad that I actually don't have to make it." She couldn't help but think that Lucy would be proud of her for acting like this.
"Holy fuck. Skylar... I'm sort-of ENGAGED. I'm having a harder time believing this than I did that time blood came out of my sink." Sadly? Chelle wasn't exactly exaggerating either.
Skylar chuckled. "It does take a little getting used to," she told her. Of course, Skylar had went through this three times now, so maybe she was just, well, used to it by this point.
"Wow. I just... wow." She sat there, grinning stupidly. "This is... you were the first person I wanted to tell, you know? Ideally, I wanted Chloe here too, but... I don't think she's ready to be happy for ANYONE yet."
"Well, there will be a time when she's able to be happy for you," Skylar said to her. "Right now she's just...going through something completely awful. Hopefully things will get better."
"God... I don't see how they can, babe. This ain't some random death. Her and Lucy were like... almost symbiotic, you know?" She wanted so badly just to be happy... but she kept worrying.
"I know that. I'm not saying that it's going to happen next year or next month, or possibly even next year," Skylar said. "I do know that Lucy would be very happy for you, though."
"Yeah, I know." Chelle grinned wistfully there. "Little goober would be bouncing around, trying to shove every iced latte she knew of down my throat till I was as hyper as she was."
Skylar chuckled. "She'd probably already be picking out some sort of dress, either just to wear or even for the bridesmaids or even for you."
"I'm worried about Kev, Skylar. He hasn't said three words to me since Lucy died. His eyes look so... so DEAD." She shook her head. "You know his girlfriend, don't you? Can you talk to her? See if she can do anything?"
Skylar nodded. "I'm sure she's doing everything that she can think of, already, though," she said to her. "I'll talk to her, though. I promise."
"Thanks. And um.... if it isn't a big deal.... I mean, I could ask Chloe, she's like my sister anyway, if ya don't wanna do it..." The first sure sign Rachelle was freaking out. She NEVER stammered or beat around the bush. "Any interest in being my maid of honor? Like... whenever the hell this goes down?"
"Really?" Skylar asked. "I'd love to be your maid of honor, Rachelle. I'd be, well, honored." She stood up and reached across the table, hugging her.
"I've been like an honorary Van Warren since I was a kid, but... I've never felt as connected to someone friend-wise as you." She silently wondered what the HELL Skylar's whole Xena-deal was, anyway.
Skylar smiled. "Well, I've never really felt connected to anyone on a friendship level like I have with you, either," she told Rachelle. She actually didn't know that Rachelle knew so much about the supernatural, or she would have been more than willing to explain it much better that Mere had.
"Well? We're just awesome that way. Nobody can step to this level of awesomeness. So... yeah. Woo-hoo. You get to do maid of honor shit." It really WAS like trying to plan bridal things for a guy.
"I am. I wasn't... not calm, really... I think it was more... disbelief. I mean, I don't know what I'm more surprised at: the fact that she wants to be JUST mine, or the fact that I honestly BELIEVE her now." And she did, too. Unlike last time, when she woke every morning afraid of the other show dropping, somehow Rachelle BELIEVED now that Neely wanted nobody but her. Or at least wouldn't act on it again.
"Well, good then. I'm glad at least a little bit of happy has come your way." Especially in all of this, well, hell that life had been lately. "All you got to do is go with the flow on stuff like this. If you really feel like she won't mess around this time, don't question it. Just go with it."
"So of course... now we eventually have to have The Talk... comparing and contrasting their 'styles', if you catch my drift..." She gave an evil laugh, knowing that would embarrass the HELL out of Neely.
Skylar laughed as well. "Oh, that should just be adorably fun, won't it?" she asked her.
