Who: Ashley & Gideon
Where: Ronald Reagan High campus
When: Tuesday morning, Feb. 16th
As the geek was wont to do in the mornings before school, he sat out at one of the picnic tables, reviewing all the homework he’d done last night, checking for any mistakes and whatnot before turning it all in throughout the day. When he was done with that, Gideon pulled out possibly his most prized possession: His journal.
For months now he’d been working on a song for Lydia, wanting it to be perfect, wanting it to express exactly how he felt about her. The geek was working on this when a bunch of jocks came out of nowhere and sat down at the picnic table. One of them smirked and laughed, “Well, what do we have here.” He snatched Gideon’s journal out of his hands and a moment later great guffaws came from him just before he pointed out to his buddies, “Yo, look. York thinks he’s some Casanova!”
Ash liked to act like he wasn't looking forward to starting school. He'd even made his brother very literally drag him up and shove him into the shower to get him ready for it. He'd turned down a car ride there though, preferring instead to take his skateboard and find his own way. Being at a new school held the same excitement that being in a new city did. A fresh start.
Once there, he got his locker assignment from the office and set off with the numbers written on a bit of paper and a few vague directions on how to get there. They'd given him a map but it really wasn't much help either. All he did know was that he had to cross the entire campus to get to the building he needed. So with his skateboard tucked under one arm and his stack of papers in his other hand he set off. He was just passing by a nice grassy area with some picnic tables when a commotion caught his sensitive ears. He glanced over, starting to walk by but then pausing instead to watch.
The jock’s buddies started laughing with him when the guy began quoting, out loud, the song Gideon had been working on for months. With cheeks beet red, the geek bolted to his feet and made a grab for the journal, “Roy, cut it out!” This clearly amused Roy, who had been warned off by Jason to leave the geek alone, but honestly…the jock just didn’t give a crap what he said. Closing the journal, he tossed it to one his buddies standing behind Gideon, “Or you’re gonna do what, York? You gonna beat me up?” Roy cackled, “I’d love to see you try.”
Eyebrows lifted a little at the blatant bullying and Ash knew he was in trouble already. He didn't take that sort of stuff sitting down. If he was getting kicked out of school on the first day for fighting then it better be a good fight for a good reason. His last thought before going over there was that Jon was going to have his balls.
"Hey, meathead." He called, darting out to snatch the journal out of midair with a speed that seemed unusual for a human, but came naturally to his wolf form. "Why don't you get your own journal, eh? I think I saw some Hello Kitty ones on sale at Walgreens." His tone seemed mocking and almost playful, but he had a serious scowl on his face that showed his bad mood. He was almost baring his teeth.
“What did you say to me?” Roy demanded, getting up in Ash’s face. Being a linebacker for the high school football team, the beefy teenager wasn’t unused to intimidating people and the fact that he was sore loser probably didn’t help him in any way with his attitude. The jock wasn’t about to let some new kid tell him what to do.
Gideon, who not one for physical confrontation at all, tried to salvage the situation. Nervously, he lifted his hands to his hair that was getting pretty long and pushed it behind his ears. It was a gesture he frequently did when he was nervous or uncomfortable and right now…the geek was feeling a lot of both.
“G-Guys? I-Is this really necessary?” He rolled his lower lip inward nervously, looking between Ashley and Roy, wondering if he should get a teacher.
"You heard me!" Ash countered back, getting right back into this asshole's face. The guy was taller than him, and heavier than him but Ash was certain he could take him. He had more strength in him than appearances gave way. "Do you need me to repeat it slower so you catch on?" Ash hadn't forgotten about the other bully behind him and was keeping an ear out for sudden movements, but his eyes were unwavering on the man in front of him.
"Look." He finally said, fist clenching around the journal in it. "Either you drop this like a big boy and we go about our business, or you throw a punch at me, I kick your ass in front of all your little friends, and you get us both expelled. I can tell you right now I could give a flying fuck if I get kicked out of school considering it's my first day, but I bet mommy, daddy and coach will be very disappointed in you if it goes that way." He growled, "So what'll it be, jackass?"
Roy wasn’t entirely stupid and he knew that football was pretty much his only ticket into college. While he didn’t like the implications that the new kid was implying that he was slow, he couldn’t afford to get into any major fights that could get him expelled. The jock was already on academic thin ice as it was, not to mention all the bullying complaints, so…he backed off, indicating to his buddies that they needed to get going. As they walked away, he pointed at Gideon, who physically stepped back because…let’s face it, he was a twiggy nerd in comparison to the linebacker. Of course he was intimidated!
His arms had been crossed over his chest and Gideon had somewhat hunched in on himself as Roy glared and pointed at him as he passed. The geek avoided the linebackers gaze, his hair falling forward to hide his face as Gideon turned it away.
Ash was glaring daggers into the bully's back as he walked away with his friends, not backing down himself until the group had rounded a corner and gone out of sight. Then he relaxed, physically deflating from his puffed up state with a sigh and turned to the kid he'd just defended.
"Here man." He said quietly, approaching him timidly because the kid looked like he was about to disappear into the floor. He offered him his journal back. "I'm Ash."
When Roy and his buddies were out of sight, Gideon relaxed a little just like Ash did. Running a hand through his hair, the geek smiled at Ash as he took his journal back. He took a calming breath and then offered his hand, “I’m Gideon.” Gesturing with the journal he thanked the other teenager, “Thanks. Your reputation will take a hit, though, for crossing Roy. Not to mention when everyone finds out you protected a geek.” Gideon chuckled a little at that.
Ash shook his new friend's hand and gave him a slightly lopsided smile. "Eh, I'm the new kid; I'm already bottom of the pecking line anyway. Besides, I won that fight. Has to at least give me some points in the badass scale, yeah?" He joked, reaching to push a hand through his dark hair. The movement made his long sleeve ride up a little and show a peek of the tattoos in had covering his arms that he had to hide from the school. "Hey, do you think you could repay me by showing me where this locker is?" He asked playfully, offering the slip of paper with his locker number and combo to the other kid.
Gideon took the offered paper with the locker information and looked it over. The geek handed the paper back with a smile, “Sure.” Before he did anything, though, Gideon made sure all the little things he had tucked away within the pages of the journal were still there, safe and sound. Mostly, they were little images of Lydia where she accomplished something and it was documented in the school newspaper. More recently, it was pictures of the two of them together, which he kept in the back pocket of the journal. A little more relieved that everything seemed in order, Gideon started packing up his stuff, “So...” He grabbed at anything to strike up a conversation, “N-Nice tattoos.”
"Thanks." He grinned, immediately. "Sorta sucks I have to cover them up though. I don't think I'm allowed to show them at school." He followed along by the other teenager, watching people pass him with the same lack of shame he took to everything he did. "So...you write poetry? Or songs?" He asked, nudging his hand toward the journal to indicate what he was talking about. He'd heard the bullies reading out of it.
A little smile curved Gideon’s lips as he turned the journal over in his hands, it quickly disappeared at how close something private had been destroyed. “U-Uhm…songs, I write songs,” The geek cleared his throat, “The one they…they were reading was for my g-girlfriend.”
"Cool." He said with a nod, completely not judgmental. "Sometimes I wish I could do stuff like that. I watch my brother do it all the time. He plays guitar and writes music, he's good at it too." He smiled a little, it was pretty obvious he was close to his brother and really admired him. "Do you play guitar too?"
Gideon nodded, pushing a lock of his hair behind an ear, “Yeah. I, um…play for Suicide Messiah,” He said a little shyly as the geek was still getting used to the increased attention whenever the band went to the clubs they were booked in. Of course, he was still considered a geek at school. Go figure.
"Wow! ...Never heard of you." He laughed, "But I'm still new in town, so that can change, right? I play drums, but I'm not in a band anymore." He realized he'd stopped paying attention to everything around him and was focused on the boy next to him. He did notice they were coming up to a row of lockers though. He tried to look around to remember the place.
The geek ducked his head a little and chuckled at Ash's exclamation. The other boy was right; Suicide Messiah was a local band and wasn't well known nationally...yet. They were working on their first album at Full Moon Records when they could. "Yeah," He started to explain, "We're just a local band. But, we're recording our first album at Full Moon Records." It was something that Gideon was really excited about and he was very happy to share that information with his newfound friend.
"Hell yeah, that's awesome." He grinned, and after a moment of thought he added, "Good name for a studio too." He noticed the numbers on the lockers they were passing where starting to go up closer to his own. He glanced down at the paper still in his hand. Just a few more it looked like. He started slowing a little.
Gideon slowed with Ashley and offered an invitation for lunch, “Lydia and I usually have lunch outside at the picnic tables. You’re welcome to join us if you want.” The geek smiled and then stuffed the journal back into his backpack, lest Roy find him with it again. Then he remembered Clarity, who sat with them occasionally. The blond was relatively new to the school as well, “There’s another girl who’s sort of new. Moved to L.A. just before the holidays. Her name is Clarity.”
He smiled at the invitation, glad to have made some friends already. Also, he was glad to have made some enemies. It was going to be fun to give that Roy guy some hell he clearly deserved. There was nothing more fun than bullying the bullies. "Thanks, I'll be there." He said, "And thanks for the help showing me here." he added as he concentrated on undoing the combination lock, tongue sticking out a little as he carefully worked at it. When the door clicked open on the first try he gave a small shout of victory and then proceeded to jam his skateboard inside of it without much thought to damaging school property. Then, he slammed the door shut again just in time for first bell to ring. "Well, see you at lunch then, yeah?" He asked Gideon, fishing his map and schedule out of his bag.
Hefting his backpack onto his shoulders again, Gideon nodded, “Yeah. Lydia will love meeting you.” The geek smiled back and chuckled, “But she likes meeting most everybody.” Gideon then offered the new boy some luck, “Good luck with your classes today. If you see me in the halls or anything and need help, let me know.”
"Sure will." He grinned his lopsided grin again and tossed a playful salute back to Gideon, before he was turning to run to class. "See ya!"
