Christmas Chill Time
Who: Mere and Devon
Where: Devon's Place
When: Dec. 24, Thursday
If someone like Luke and Lena could see this, the word they'd likely use was: pathetic. If ever a vampire longed more to be human than Devon, I doubt any of us had ever seen him. The calm, sage vamp stood in his small home, dressed in old, worn-in jeans, a rather festive Christmas sweater, and black slippers, watching the lights on his Christmas tree blinking rhythmically. This was so peaceful... to him? It was heaven.
While Mere had on what would be considered a festive color, the dress she was wearing was certainly not anything a good little elf would wear. The tiny silk dress basically covered what it was required to cover to let her be allowed into public and that was it. Really, did this girl own anything that covered her legs? She was personally wondering as she sat with Devon on the sofa if he had bought the sweater at from a Bill Cosby garage sale, but didn't ask. Honestly, he had been around long enough that he probably HAD. "So, how exactly do you want to spend Christmas?" she asked him.
And here's where Devon could occasionally surprise even Meredith. With a calm, polite smile, he simply replied: "Hopefully unwrapping YOU under the tree."
She laughed. "Now that's some Christmas spirit even I can get behind," she joked. "Or let you get behind. However you want to do this."
"Part of me wants to make a 'white Christmas' joke, but then I wonder if that would ruin my rep forever. And possibly make me admit that you're a bad influence even on ME." Oh, he was really letting loose tonight, humor-wise, wasn't he?
She laughed. "I think I'm a bad influence on just about everyone," she said with a smile. She *had* turned Chloe to the dark side, after all. Once you were Mere, you didn't go back to men.
"Really. Next thing you know you'll have me pulling your hair, spanking you, and talking dirty. And to think I once wanted to be a priest..." He sighed with mock resignation, shaking his head.
She just laughed harder. "Well, I always heard that priests had dirty minds, so it's not exactly shocking that you'd want to do all of that to me."
"If you make ONE 'little boy' comment, I swear I'll show you just how long I can keep a vow of celibacy." Ooooo, the glare he shot her there. Could he be serious???
"And I wasn't even going to go there tonight," Mere said. "I was going to offer to wear a nun costume, but if you want to get all huffy about things, then I won't."
"Ok. Schoolgirl? Hot. Devil? Hot. Most of the outfits you tease me by suggesting? ALSO hot. But a nun? Ok... THAT might give me the creeps." He gave an apologetic smirk, as despite his joking, religion was one subject that still... creeped him out a little now.
That really only made her laugh even harder. "They have it in costume shops," she said in her own defense. "But alright, no nun costume for you."
"Although..." hey, give the guy credit. After a hundred years of zen and calm... he was trying to loosen up a bit for her. "I do like letting you... corrupt me."
"Everyone tends to like a little sin," she commented to him. Still, his own obvious influence had been seen on her as well. Everyone was describing her as much calmer than before.
"I can't believe you're willing to indulge in all this boring family stuff just for me." And here it was: he was admitting he knew how she really felt. "I know you. I know you'd rather be out drinking, or dancing, or pretty much anything BUT sitting here in front of a blinking tree. But you're doing it anyway. And that really... means a lot to me."
"For all you know maybe I'm starting to enjoy this family type stuff," she said to him with a straight face. OK, maybe it wasn't the most exciting thing to do. No lying there. In all honesty, she just liked spending time with him, whether it was in his home or out at a club. Didn't matter where to her.
"Yeah. Next thing you know we'll be adopting a baby. And having Scrabble night. And watching Sesame Street." Was he teasing her now? Possibly. But he loved it. Every moment with her. He'd waited so long for it, watched on the sidelines as she'd made every bad decision he could stand to watch her make.
"OK, I draw the line at Sesame Street. Big Bird gave me nightmares as a kid," Mere told him point blank. "And I can't really spell worth a crap. So, Scrabble's probably out, too."
"So... we'd play Special Scrabble. Mono-syllabic words only." And then, just to tease her, he continued. "Which, by the way, means, 'words with one syllable'."
She elbowed him. "I do know what that word means," she said with a smirk. "The term 'ass' also has one syllable."
"It does, huh." He grinned, winking at her. "As does the word 'great', which I usually put before 'ass' when referring to you." If Mere could HAVE a heart attack, this would be it. Devon? Being offensive, snarky, AND flirty all in one night? Beholllllld, the pale rider, the apocalypse looms!
If only he realized how right that statement was, but none of them did at this time. "I am so obviously rubbing off on you, am I?" she asked, a smirk seemingly tattooed on her face by this point. "I mean, you're being snarky and everything."
