Subtlety
Who: Ash and Lucy
Where: Avarice
When: Friday night (December 4)
For the first time in what felt like ages, Ash had a night to himself. No watcher-related stuff, no trying to help Gwen get down from the emotional ledge she'd been on... just time for him to do anything he wanted. Which led to this: the blonde watcher sitting at a table in a dimly lit corner of Avarice, his young girlfriend snuggled tightly to his side, letting the music just permeate through him.
Resting comfortably against Ash's shoulder, Lucy didn't have a care in the world. Her fingers toyed with his, tracing their length, lifting them one by one, and ultimately lacing together as she held his hand loosely. Turning her head, she kissed the side of his neck and grinned before flashing a glance up at him. "Guess what." Shifting a little beside him, she crossed her leg over his, her calf hanging over the inside of his thigh, her short pink Gucci miniskirt riding up toward her hip. Yet she still managed to look so sweet and innocent as she bit the inside of her lip and gazed at him with those big, blue eyes.
Dearest lord in heaven: how could he have even a single care in the world when he had her there, looking like that, talking in that sweet, sexy-yet-innocent voice of hers... the fact that he wasn't constantly smiling was a testament to HOW much he'd gone through in his life. He squeezed her hand lightly, brushing his head against hers once. "What's that, love?"
"It's December," Lucy pointed out, her smile turning mischievous. "You know what that means, right?" Oh, subtle, right? And just in case he wasn't following her, she wanted to set the record straight. "And I don't mean Christmas. Or the Winter dance. Which is coming up. Or the fact that I think we should go ice skating." In Los Angeles. Where all the snow was. "I'm talking about that OTHER thing."
"Wow, Luce. Amazing that yer not a detective, with all that subtlety." He couldn't help but roll his eyes as he smirked and playfully nipped her on the shoulder. "Believe me. There are... plans for your birthday. Plans that certain people will tear me limb from limb if I go into."
She pouted prettily, but she probably would have slapped him if he HAD started to reveal anything. Lucy liked surprises - the good kind - and she sure as heck wouldn't want anything ruined. Slipping her arms around his neck, she leaned in closer to him and gave him a quick, playful peck on the lips. "The only plans I'm interested in are yours. And really, you don't even have to plan for that. You just have to show up."
"Hey now." He chided, placing his index finger in front of her lips. "I may not have loads of money, but I still think I managed to do pretty good by you for the big day. It's your Sweet Sixteen. Like I'd let that go by without something major?" Deep inside, Ash was still a sweet, gentle soul... he just had trouble showing it sometimes.
Thing was, Lucy never saw just how much trouble he had showing it. In her eyes, Ash was amazing just the way he was. She saw past the darkness in him, to his heart - or liked to think she did - and everything about him was...even more beautiful than the most perfect Givenchy dress. (And they were pretty much the most perfect dresses on the planet. Audrey Hepburn? Breakfast at Tiffany's? Hello?) "Whatever you're doing, it'll be amazing, Ash. Even more so because YOU'RE doing it. Because you care. Because...you love me." Her smile softened again and this time when she kissed him, there was a lingering sweetness...and more than a touch of heat...behind it.
"I've said it before, and I'll likely say it many more times: you're my light, Lucy. You're the one good thing in my life, that makes me not become the man I used to be." God knew that the mere thought of losing her still caused those eyes to go black, that energy to surge up inside him.
She pressed her palm to his cheek, her own blue eyes crystal clear...and full of the love she felt for him. Others could say they were too young to know what they were doing, but that wasn't true. Ten, twenty, thirty years from now, it'd still be the two of them and she'd still love him just as much, if not more. "You mean everything to me. You make my life...better than it ever could have been without you. You're extraordinary."
Ash felt a lump in his throat there. To hear that tone of reverence in her voice, that unconditional love, when half the time he didn't even love HIMSELF... it got him, right in the heart. Time to lighten the mood. "So anyway. How've things been in the Van Warren household? How are the four lovliest ladies I know all holding up?"
It took Lucy a second to get what he meant and when she did, she made a face and smacked him in the chest. "You're such a loser," she huffed...though it was hard to take that seriously when she'd just told him how amazing she really thought he was. With a tiny (mock?) glare, she settled against him again. "Chloe's fabulous, because she always is, and we hardly ever see Bella anymore. I think she's practically moved in with her boyfriend. KEVIN...actually seems...I don't know. The whole Buffy thing was a surprise, but if she makes him happy, I think it's great." Was it weird that Ash's Slayer...the girl he'd been dating when Lucy came back to town...was now dating her brother? Maybe. But Lucy was actually pretty accepting of people and easy-going and, like she'd said, if Kevin was happy, that was what mattered most to her.
"Well, I'm just glad Buffy's there to make sure he doesn't wanna run me over anymore. I think I still kinda creep him out, and..." he couldn't help snickering there. "I really have no desire to be his hood ornament."
"He wouldn't," Lucy argued, her expression earnest. Maybe Ash was just teasing, but...she took things between her boyfriend and her brother seriously. "You gave him his life back. He knows that. I mean, yeah, maybe he would have healed up on his own and through rehabilitation, would have regained the full use of his voice, but...what you did.... He can't ever repay you for that. None of us can. You..." She was actually tearing up a little, just remembering her brother and the way he'd looked in that hospital bed. "I know...maybe you'll never be the type to exchange friendship bracelets or anything, but...as long as neither one of you are trying to kill the other, I'm good."
"I like Kevin. I know he's just protective because he loves you. Hell... I can identify. I think we just like mocking each other. He calls me a pale little emo freak, and I call him the gayest straight man alive. It happens." And then a shrug. He laughed, kind of liking the family feeling he got around the Van Warrens. He'd... never really had that. "Speaking of families... you and Patience still getting along alright?"
"You mean has she tried to kick my ass yet?" Lucy rolled her eyes - and yes, she'd heard exactly what he'd said about her brother. It earned him another quick glare. "No. I mean, yeah, I think we're getting along. She...she was really nice during Thanksgiving." It had almost freaked Lucy out. Patience wasn't known for her...warm heart and generous nature.
"Yeah. Well." Nothing wrong with telling, right? Wasn't like Patience told him NOT to tell her... "About that. Let's just say... she's really feeling the love a little more right now."
While Lucy wasn't exactly a dumb blonde, no one had ever accused her of being brilliant. "What, like, she's been getting high or something?"
"No, no, no..." Ash almost choked there. Not that he couldn't picture Patience trying it... he just knew drugs weren't her thing. "She's, um.... she's pregnant, Lucy. She just found out like, the day before Thanksgiving."
"WHAT?!?" All right, maybe she said that a little too loudly. She'd popped up and the look she gave him seemed to suggest that was ludicrous. Not...not that she didn't think Patience and Pat...weren't...you know...DOING IT. Just. "Patience?" she asked, as if trying to verify they were still talking about the same person. "Pregnant. With a baby?"
"No, Luce. Pregnant with a Giraffe. Yes, with a baby! They weren't exactly TRYING, but, if you know what I mean, they weren't exactly trying NOT to, either." Yeah, goooooood explanation there, Ash.
The girl stuck her tongue out at him. "Oh, you mean like WE'RE not really trying, but...not...exactly...not...all the time?" Yeah. So...maybe that thought freaked her out a little. Moving on. "That's...well....wow. You're gonna be an uncle." She did smile at that. "Uncle Ash. Awwwwww!"
"Hey, I don't like the visual of my sister getting all thrusty any more than YOU do. In fact, there's no image in the world I'd rather erase from my brain forever. But still... it was gonna happen eventually." He held her closer, unable to help but imagining themselves in such a way, sometime down the line. "Speaking of which...." he leaned in, whispering something into her ear with a wide, naughty grin.
Why she was still surprised by the naughty things Ash suggested, Lucy had no idea. One would think she was still a blushing virgin...mostly because she looked so sweet and her cheeks still had a way of blooming with color every time he said or did something a little less than innocent. But that didn't mean she didn't have a naughty streak. Biting her lip, she lowered her gaze, a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "You're not trying to knock me up, are you?" she teased. But even as she did, she withdrew from him and stood up, holding her hand out to him as she glanced back to the dance floor.
