Birthday Surprises
Who: Wesley and Gwen
Where: Wesley's House
When: Monday Morning, Dec. 1
While it wasn't early for Wesley (ten o'clock in the morning never had been, after all), he knew it was going to be very early for at least one person in his home. He opened the door and peaked into Gwen's bedroom. Thankfully, she had decided to pass out in a tank top and a pair of shorts, so nothing horrible like that greeted him. (Naked daughter was not what he wanted to see!) He walked into the bedroom and shook her gently. "Gwen, wake up," he said.
Heartbreakingly, Gwen was passed out on her bed with a half-empty bottle of vodka, a picture of her and Skylar laughing and cuddling on her last birthday, the last birthday card Skylar had given her, and a CD of Suicide Messiah that Gwen had recorded at an early show.
First off, Wesley plucked the bottle of vodka out of the bed, then the rest of the items. He really needed her to get to the point where she would put all of these things away, for her own sake. However, he also knew exactly how she felt. She was mourning. He had done it, in a very similar way, although with no sleeping around. He'd just brood over alcohol and not go out that much. Once these things were removed, he shook her again, a little rougher this time.
"Nnnn... Dnn leaveme..." She mumbled a little as he shook her, before finally her eyes opened halfway. Taking a moment or two to process where she was and assess the situation, she sighed and gave him a sad wave. "Mornin' Wes... Why are you in my room? Is everything alright?"
Yeah, knew exactly what she was going through. "Everything's alright, Gwen," he said to her. "I do want you to get up and come downstairs to the kitchen, though. I've got a surprise for you."
"Is it a hot naked bitch? Cuz... That'd make you the coolest motherfucker EVER." Then she paused. "Naked Faith would be nice too... Maybe you called Giles.."
"That's just disturbing," he told her, making a face. "I'd rather not picture you with a hot naked anyone, thank you." He pulled her out of the bed. "Just come on."
"Fine, fine..." Had anyone ELSE moved her stuff? Oh, the shit woulda been ON. But... she knew Wes meant well, and just sleepily followed him. "So what's goin' on?"
He just moved it, it wasn't hidden away or burned like maybe it needed to be, so things were fine. "Just follow me to the kitchen then." When they arrived in the kitchen, a cake was sitting on the table for Gwen, along with three wrapped boxes.
"Aw, Wes..." She felt herself sniffle a little. Even though she'd made a point of not mentioning her birthday to anyone this year, he'd remembered anyway. "You didn't have to..."
"Yes I did. What sort of father figure type person would I be if I forgot your birthday?" he pointed out. "Well, go ahead and open a present, or do you want cake first?"
"Presents. I still got vodka-taste in my mouth, so maybe I should drink milk or something before I attempt to enjoy cake." Hey, it was sound logic to her. "And Wes? Thanks, you know? For putting up with me."
"Alright," he said when she deduced what she should do first. "And I don't put up with you. I care about you. There's a difference."
"Yer gonna make me cry, ya doofus." She said with a grin. "So gimme a gift already before I do something stupid like weep."
He picked up a medium sized square box wrapped in red paper. "I'm sure you can guess that I had help with this gift," he said to her.
"Thank Liz for me." She said with a snarky wink. "And if you ever snap pics of her naked, feel free to share." Come on, this was GWEN.
"I'd rather that I didn't," Wesley said. The sharing, at any rate.
Opening the package, Gwen laughed happily and grinned. "Dude. Do any other Slayers have Watchers that buy them back issues of Supergirl? Awesome... Thanks, Wes."
"Well, I don't know. I don't usually keep up with what other Watchers do for their Slayers," Wesley pointed out to her. "Did I get it right?"
"Impressively enough, you DID." Gwen said with a big grin. "Seriously. I'm WAY impressed."
He smiled. "Good." He picked up a slightly larger box wrapped in green paper with a white bow on top of it. "Here's another."
"If Ben's remains are in there I'm gonna be THRILLED..." Then she kinda caught what she said. "But I swear I didn't try to kill him."
"I didn't, either," he told her, "even if I sort of wish that his remains were in there as well." Yeah, still not happy about that, either.
"DUUUDE." She pulled a long leather trenchcoat out of the box, grinning wickedly. "I am gonna get so much ASS in this thing..."
"Well, that wasn't why I got it. I got it because it will start to get a little cold soon." Disturbing images in head head for the win.
"You're the best, man." Aw, she was trying to not get emotional. Really.
"Alright, one more," he said, picking up a very small box and handing it to her.
"Wes..." She said, raising a brow as she took it. She knew that while not exactly struggling, he wasn't made of money. Still, she took it gratefully and started to unwrap it.
Inside of it was a small locket on a chain. "I found it in an antique store and had it clean up." He smiled at her. "Not exactly to your usual taste, but I thought you might like it, anyway."
"Its beautiful..." She said with a gulp, fingers delicately examining it, opening it with cautious precision.
"I didn't put a picture inside of it," he said. "I wanted you to save it for when you found someone worthy of putting in there." He sat down at the kitchen table. "I know you're in a lot of pain right now. I know it won't be easy or quick to get over. I do want you to see that one day, there will be someone out there for you, who will love you as much as you deserve."
[14:26] lena7623: Fuck. That did it. She started crying. Sobbing, really. "I know who's pictures going in it, Wes. Not someone I'm gonna be sleepin' with. Its gonna be the person who's my strength. The one person I know who'll never let me down: you." She sniffled and hugged him tightly. "I love you, Wes. You're the best dad I could want."
He hugged her back tightly as well. "I love you, too, Gwen." He wished he could make everything alright, he really did.
"I mean it. There's room in here for two pictures. One, I'll save for the right person. The other one though? You. Only you. Wes... you don't know how I wish you WERE my father. Because any girl could only wish to have a guy as great as you for a dad." She sniffled again, trying to stop crying before she totally embarrassed herself.
He hugged her again. "I wish you were biologically mine, too, but we don't need that, either. We're as close as any father and daughter can be, and that's what a lot of biological ones don't have."
"You're the best, Wes. I mean it. No matter what happens to me..." she gulped, "Don't ever think you're to blame for any of it."
"I wish you wouldn't say things like that, though," he said to her. "It makes me worry about you even more."
"Wes... it's just... what I'm going through... I ain't gonna go out and off myself or anything, but I can't seem to HEAL, either. And I don't want you, or Patience, or Mars, or anyone, really, thinking they're to blame." She haaaated saying this next part. "Even Ben and Skylar. All they did was love each other. I wouldn't want her with me if she wasn't in love with me. What's going on with me is nobody's fault but my own."
"It's not your fault, either," Wesley pointed out. "It's just what it is. It's how you feel. How you feel isn't your fault." Technically, it hadn't been Skylar's fault, either, but he was having a harder time excepting that.
Funny how of all the people pissed at Skylar, the one she actually HURT is the only one who'd fully forgiven her. "Forgive her, Wes. I do."
"I'm trying, Gwen," Wesley said to her. "I really am. She can't control her feelings, either. I understand that." Things still could have went a lot better than they had, even if she had come by and apologized.
"I just feel like I'm dying inside, Wes. And I cant seem to get any better." This was the most she'd opened up to anyone yet. Maybe this was the real birthday present: the ability to finally let this out to someone.
"I hate saying the old stand by 'it takes time.' I'll tell you the truth, Gwen. Even if you find love again, even if you move on, you'll still love her forever. That's just what happens when you first fall in love." Wesley sighed, looking away for a moment. "A part of you will always love Skylar. To lie and say you'll be completely over her in time is a disservice to you. However, you'll find reason to move on eventually. My reason was you. You'll find one, too. That I can promise." Him opening up like this hadn't ever happened, either. Maybe this was good for both of them.
