Finally!!
Who: Buffy and Kevin
Where: Van Warren Basement
When: Tuesday, Nov. 24
One thing Kevin Van Warren prided himself on was his ability to avoid being dramatic. Despite finding out Irene had cheated on him, Kevin avoided making a big deal out of. He'd talked to her, they'd ended things... and whether or not she chose to make a big deal of it, he wasn't about to. He knew the doubts he'd been having for the last month or two anyway. So today? He merely sat in the Van Warren basement, working out a few songs he and Lucy had been collaborating on. Not that he was slummin' though, not even at home. He still had on semi-sparkling black vinyl pants, a dark blue silk dress shirt, and his 'guyliner' as Ash had annoyingly called it.
When Buffy had heard at Eden what had happened, the first thing that she did was run straight over to Kevin's place to see just what in the heck was going on. She had been met by Chloe at the door, who said that Kevin really hadn't talked about it to anyone, but that was totally about to change. She was directed to the basement, which, of course, looked better than her own bedroom than an actual basement because it was a Van Warren basement. "Kevin?" she called out at the top of the stairs.
Buffy? Kevin blinked as he heard a voice he wasn't exactly used to hearing around the house. Spinning around, he gave her that sweet, bright (actually very Lucy-like) grin and waved. "Hey Buff! Um... Kinda surprised to see ya! What's the occasion?"
Buffy came down the stairs, looking at him sort of like he had sprouted a second head. "I heard you and Irene broke up," Buffy said to him. "And I didn't get to hear it from you. I am your friend, right? You tell friends these sorts of things."
"Wow. Word... REALLY spreads fast, huh." He looked more surprised than guilty, as it had just happened two days ago. "I honestly haven't personally told anyone but my sisters yet." Blinking a little, he gave an apologetic frown. "Guess I just wasn't in the mood to be felt sorry for yet."
"Well, everyone knows," she said to him. "Not sure if that's a good or bad thing, though." She shrugged. "You look...surprisingly OK. Are you like, actually OK, or fake OK? She kind of understood not wanting others to feel sorry for him, though. She had certainly gotten more than enough of it.
"I'm actually ok." And he was. Sweet demeanor be damned... He was Van Warren goddammit, he wasn't gonna let some girl get him down. "I mean, being cheated on kinda sucks, but, what can ya do, right?"
She sat down beside him. "Wait, she cheated on you?" What the eff? "She gave you all sorts of crap about being healed and not laying in state in the hospital and then has the gall to cheat on you? You must be Zen, because I would want to kick her butt." She paused for a moment in thought. "As a matter of fact, I still kind of do."
"She's not worth it, Buffy..." He looked at, trying to figure out what exactly it was that he was seeing in her eyes that was so different. For once... was it hope? "If she cheated, then obviously I can do much better."
"Obviously," Buffy agreed. So, now how long did she have to wait before, you know, asking him out or something? What was the time limit? She had done wrong with Ash by that, and just ended up being a rebound girl. "So, what are you going to do now? Hide in the basement and work on music?"
"Well, to be honest, I'm mostly planning on chillin' till everyone knows I'm fine." He could say this without saying exactly what was on his mind, right? "I have a chance now, to ask out my dream girl, without hurting anyone. But I'm waiting till she knows its for the right reason."
"Well, a good way to show that you're fine is to go out and, well, show them," Buffy pointed out to him. "You're dream girl? And what would this right reason be?"
"Nobody wants to think they're a rebound, you know? Especially when you're pretty much head over heels in love with the person." He sat back, watching her face. "If need be... I can wait."
"No, because that tends to suck," Buffy said, but she smiled at him. "I don't think that she'll think it, though. I think that she'll know better." With how almost nonchalant he was acting about this break up, no one would think that.
"Mind me asking YOU something?" He interjected, a curious brow lifting. "What's with the sudden change? You've never looked as... happy and antsy as you do right now."
She thought about it for a moment and then just shrugged. She was happy. Not that her friend had gotten broken up with, or whatever, because that was kind of lame. She was glad that now, maybe, she had a chance, though.
"Come on, now. We never keep anything from each other. When I was depressed about my injury, I turned to you. When you were upset about the guy who will likely one day be..." He shuddered comically, "my brother-in-law, you came to me. You and I never judge each other. Tell me what's going on in that pretty blonde head." He gave that trademark giggle and leaned back.
"Well, I'm glad that you're not upset about Irene, for one. If she wants to be lame, good for her, I guess. She didn't deserve you," Buffy pointed out. That wasn't all, but that was actually a big part of it.
"...why are we doing this?" His voice sounded surprised, like this tiptoeing was beneath them both. "I think we both know what's going on here, and we're both too freaked out to be the one to speak first. So the heck with it. I will." Oh jeez. All he could think was, please don't let me have misread this. "I'd never cheat on anyone. Ever. And that's the only reason I never admitted this. But I've been slowly falling for you since pretty much the first week or so that we met."
"Oh thank god you said it, because I was about to burst," Buffy said with a laugh. "I didn't want to push it because, well, I did date someone right after they were left before, and that didn't work out, obviously. Of course, that wasn't given any sort of closure, Lucy just took off because she was scared, and, when she came back, it was all over. It's different with you, though. You're relationship actually had a chance, and it didn't work." She laughed again. "Sorry, I'm babbling. I've been wanting this for a while, too. I just, I'm not going to take someone's boyfriend, you know?"
He thought about it for a few moments, trying to think of what to say, before finally just getting up and doing what he'd wanted to do for months anyway: kissed her. It was a sweet, but eager kiss, his eyes fluttering closed as he cupped her chin with his fingers.
She kissed him back fully. She actually had been wanting to do this for a while. She had held back because he was always with Irene, though. She slipped her arm around his shoulders, pulling him closer to her.
Pulling away lightly, he got that mischievous little grin and laughed. "Now of course... we get to enjoy the awkward drama that ensues when Lucy realizes I'm dating her boyfriend's ex."
"I'm so over drama it's not even funny," Buffy said, but laughed anyway. "Although, it might be fun to watch it from the other side for a change."
"It'll be fine." He said reassuringly. "Trust me, unlike the rest of my family, my sisters and I are very anti-drama. Even Lucy's excitable self."
"Good," she said to him, leaning over and kissing him again. She knew that she was tired of drama. It wouldn't be too weird for her to be dating Kevin, anyway. She doubted even Lucy would say too much once she got over the shock.
"This is such a relief." Kevin didn't open up completely to many people, but had to Buffy almost from the day they met. "I've felt so guilty for so long now because I kept falling for you more and more... I just didn't want to be a jerk to anyone by doing anything about it because I cared a lot for Irene too. Plus... TWO hot blondes in less than a year? I defy my parents to call me gay now." He joked, giving that feminine giggle again.
She laughed again. "Well, I didn't want to be a relationship wrecker, so I never said anything, either." She'd been dumped twice now, so, she'd rather not have someone feel bad on her account. It felt crappy to be dumped for someone else. Like you weren't good enough. "I don't think your parents CAN call you gay now."
"Ohgawd." He balked with that laugh. "Are you kidding? They'll probably think you're my 'friend', just trying to make people think I'm straight." Luckily he found it funny. Most of the time he just ignored it. "Now I'm gonna have to make sure Chloe and Nica are totally right for each other. Since me and Lucy both finally got our 'one', all three of us need to be equally happy."
She shook her head. "Well, then they're just wrong," she said to him. "I'm sure that Nica and Chloe are fine. These are things that you kind of need to figure out for yourself."
"Come with me." He said, standing again and offering his hand. "Let's go tell Chloe and Lucy the good news."
"Well, this should be interesting," she said, taking his hand and letting him lead her up the stairs.
