Chatting in the Waiting Room
Who: Skylar and Neely
Where: The Hospital Waiting Room
When: Saturday Morning, Nov. 14 (Right after Neely sees Ben.)
Skylar had finally had a decent night's sleep. She had slept in her own bed, with her baby, and was feeling much better. Of course, she was partially feeling better because Ben was now awake and she had received no call last night saying that he had lapsed back into unconsciousness. She was actually being nice and letting other people come in and out to see him for a while, since she had monopolized him sort of while he was still asleep. Not many had wanted to come in there while she was passed out on the bed next to him.
Right now she was mindlessly watching the television sitting in the waiting room that Ben's family had monopolized, with her legs folded underneath her and was curled up into one small chair. Hopefully, everyone else would be DONE with him soon so that she could actually go in there and see him, and hopefully find out just when she could take him home again.
Neely had just come out of Ben’s room, her mind buzzing. The little talk they had just opened up a new can of worms for Neely and she was desperate to put the lid back on. She circled around to the waiting room and plopped down in the seat next to Skylar with a heavy-hearted sigh, “he’s a tough mother-fucker, I’ll give him that,” she murmured.
Skylar looked over at the girl. She actually hadn't really had the chance to talk much with the girl yet. She had come into town, and then everything had sort of blown up with what had happened to Ben. "That he is," she said back to Neely. "Did he say something in particular to you?"
“Uh, he said he’d be fine. Don’t be surprised if he tries to get you into a naughty nurse outfit soon, though,” she chuckled weakly. It was gonna take a little while for her normal bubbly self, clearly, but she was getting there.
"He's already trying to get me to do something like that," Skylar said bluntly. "He was doing that as soon as he woke up." Skylar could read people better than others liked to give her credit for, and knew something was wrong with Neely. "Everything OK?"
Neely chuckled, that sounded about right, didn’t it? At Skylar’s observation, she blinked. “Um, yeah. He just… he tried to help me with something and I think it confused me more,” she admitted.
"What does he want your help with?" Skylar asked her, fully turning so that she could face Neely head on. "Ben doesn't keep secrets from me. He doesn't get the option to."
“Honey, he was helping me, not the other way around,” Neely replied, meeting Skylar’s eyes.
Skylar nodded. "Sorry, just paranoid, I guess," she said to her. "I'm still freaked out about, well, everything, I guess. I never thought that someone would have the complete insanity necessary to do something like this to him."
“No, I don’t think any of us did,” Neely murmured, taking a moment to admire Skylar, since, well, she wasn’t dead. “You’re a strong chick, y’know?”
"In this world you've got to be," Skylar said to her. "Or you break really quickly." She smiled a little at Neely. "How are you holding up?"
“Better than before, I think. I mean, seeing him like that just about broke my heart, but… better,” she said simply, with a shrug. “I… kind of idolize him, seeing as I’m being honest here.”
"He'll be able to go soon enough, though, so we'll at least start seeing him again with tubes and hospital clothes and stuff." It had shaken her up as well. Of course, she got the worst sight of all. Apparently Bretton for some reason thought it was a good idea to let her see him with the stakes still shoved inside of him. Not sure why. "I think things will get better soon."
“Yeah, you know it, babe,” Neely replied, grabbing Skylar’s hand and giving it a squeeze. “It’ll be Thanksgiving soon, enough.” And we’ll have a lot to be thankful for, she thought.
"I actually get to go and introduce Ben to my family then," Skylar said. "Well, the rest of my family. Lydia's already here and knows him quite well." A little too well, but what's done can't be undone. "That should be a trip to remember."
“Lydia being your… sister?” Neely asked. Admittedly she didn’t know much about Skylar’s family, but she was trying, since they were going to be family soon enough. “And I’m guessing you’re not sure how they’ll take to him? Or do you know exactly how they’ll take to him?”
“Yeah, my sister,” Skylar said quickly. “No, I know they’ll love him. He’s male, so that’ll be a huge improvement over the last person I was with, in their eyes.” Sad but true. “Not that I really care about that. Still, their reactions aren’t a serious worry. Just dealing with them for an extended period of time can be a little nerve wracking. You know, like most families.”
Neely chuckled, “don’t take to heart what they say, babe. If anything, you find something they say offensive? Take a drink. It passes the time and makes for more fun,” she winked. “Of course, I’m usually the family member making a scene, so if you need another wheel, just drag me along,” she joked.
“They can be OK when they want to be, they’re just old school rich southern family,” Skylar told her. “They can just be a little much at times. I certainly could have a lot worse.” She smiled at the thought of bringing Neely along as well. Give them a taste of her future in-laws.
“Yeah, or nothing at all,” Neely pointed out, giving Skylar a nudge. There were some bright sides to things, after all. “Listen, I’d better head off. I smell like ass right now, but if you need anything? Don’t hesitate to give me a call, ey?”
She nodded. “I’m glad to have them, even if they can be overbearing at times,” Skylar said with a grin. “Alright, head off. I’ll call you if I need anything. If you need anything, well, I’ll probably be here.”
“Thanks babe,” Neely replied, leaning across to give Skylar a brief hug. “And honestly? I’m not against the naughty nurse outfit since that’d just be hot,” she chuckled.
