Fair Warning
Who: Jack and Pat
Where: Pat and Patience's House
When: Tuesday Night
Jack toyed with the beer bottle label from the drink that he was having. Things seemed to be going OK for the time being. Things weren't perfect, but when were they perfect? He was hanging out at Pat's house for the moment. Patience was out with a few friends right now, so it was just the two of them hanging out. "Everything going alright, Pat?" Jack asked him.
"Hm?" Pat blinked, broken from the thoughts he'd been lost in. "Yeah... just trying to decide how to tell Patience something without having her end up in jail for beating the shit out of someone..."
Jack arched an eyebrow at him. "Did Skylar try to start something else?" he asked. Patience had a temper to be reckoned with, but who else would she want to beat the shit out of right now?
"Ohhhh no. Worse. This is someone she could actually beat down." He chuckled, shaking his head and running a hand along the back of his head. "Some girl named Darlene hit on me at Avarice. Smacked me on the ass. Now granted: to most people? No big deal. But this is Patience. I love her, but you know her temper."
That name rang a bell. "Wait...Darlene? About five foot three, cherry red hair, never seen without a beer in her hand?" If it was, then Pat might have bigger problems than telling Patience that someone hit on him.
"Yeah... that's her." He tried to hold back a snicker. "She'd.... mentioned you guys were acquainted."
Jack made a face. "Keep Patience away from her, for her own safety," he said with a completely straight face.
"....wait... for real? What is she, a vampire or a demon or something?" Because he knew that human-to-human? Patience was nobody to mess with.
"No, nothing like that," Jack said, shaking his head. "She's just insane. I don't mean, like, 'oh she's crazy.' No, I mean she's clinical. She smashed a beer bottle in some guy's face when he wouldn't leave her alone one night. Destroyed half his face."
"Oh good. So a certifiable loon is hitting on me. Fantastic." Nothing could stay too good for long, right? "I guess maybe it's good that Patience's two best friends are a slayer and a telekinetic."
"If you're lucky, she'll chalk you up to an alcoholic induced fantasy, or just find someone else to fuck with," Jack said, taking a sip of his beer. "Either is likely."
"Hm. Since Patience knows I over-worry about her, would YOU be willing to help convince her to leave this chick alone? Last thing I want is that pretty face of hers all carved up." Seriously. She was the hottest woman alive to Pat. He'd hate to see her all fucked up.
"Well, if you insist on telling her, then sure, I'll make the point of spelling it out to her," Jack said. "I don't get why you feel the need to tell her, though. It's not like you hit on her back or anything. So what if someone slapped you on the ass? Won't be the last time it happens, you know that, right?"
"Yeah, I know. It's hard to explain, but... we tell each other everything." He felt lame, but... it as the truth. "Like... if a guy so much as flirts with her, I end up being told about it."
Jack shrugged. He sure as hell didn't get it, but whatever. "Alright, I'll talk to Patience then. I'd rather Patience not try to go against her, either. She's human for sure, she's just batshit crazy is all. Great guitarist, too, so it's a shame that she's so unbalanced."
"Think there's any hope for her? Hate to see real talent get wasted if shes that good." Plus, there was that horrible part of him that feared Ben falling back on his old ways and going after her. She *was* attractive, after all.
Jack shrugged. "She doesn't play without drinking. I've heard that her hands shake too bad to do anything when she doesn't, so I sort of doubt it."
"Jesus. You think she's worse off than Lexi was?" Hey... it was a fair question. "I mean, before she cleaned up, girl was BAD."
"I don't think she's a coke head, per say, but yeah, pretty much," Jack told him. "She sure as hell doesn't seem to WANT to be fixed, anyway."
"Shame." Was all he could really say. "All I know is... girl was CREEPY. Kinda gave me the heebie-jeebies the entire time we talked."
"Well, my excuse was that I was drunk," Jack said. "I may have said that before, but I think I need at least an excuse about why I hit it."
Alright, now that made Pat laugh. "Hey, no shame in it. Like I said: very attractive girl. And I can't think she was ALWAYS this creepy..."
"Ever since I've known her she has been," Jack told him. "She's much prettier when she's not talking, if you catch my drift."
Another snicker there, as Pat just shook his head. "My God. Between you and Ben, you really HAVE probably nailed half the women in this city."
"Well, and one of us seems to be off the market for real now," Jack said with a slight roll of his eyes.
"Yeah. Forgive me if I say I'll believe it when I see it. He couldn't be that way for Meredith, for Faith, hell... even though he tried, he couldn't even be that way for the nutty vamp chick he dated back in Sunnydale. Why should we think Skylar's any different?" Was Pat a little bitter towards Skylar? Possibly... but when you're constantly around Gwen and Patience, it's gotta rub off a bit.
"Neither Faith or Mere seemed to care," Jack pointed out. "Didn't know the nutty vampire chick, though." He knew what it was, though. It was the fact it was Skylar. Anyone else, and Pat would have been offering to do the toast at the wedding. "I don't know what to say to that. I think you're all insane, personally, but that's a life choice more than anything."
"Jack... you say that now, but trust me. Even if it ain't till you're 75, one day you're gonna meet that person who makes you wanna give it all up. Trust me." He smiled as he said it, thinking of Patience, and how nobody, not the sweet beauty of Iris, not the dual fantasy of Gwen and Skylar, could ever measure up to her.
Jack shrugged. "Guess you never know then," he said while having another drink. Sure, if he were attached, he could have avoided the hell that was Darlene, but there would be more than a few stories that he never would have lived, and he just wasn't sure if he would trade the experience.
"Just remember, you can't force anything. I learned that the hard way. Twice now." Damn, did he. He just felt thankful he'd retained the friendships of at least Iris and Gwen out of it. Even if Gwen still did seem a little hurt in his presence sometime.
"Which is why I have never had the intention of trying to force something like that," Jack pointed out. "I wouldn't want to force myself on any woman who wasn't completely in the know of what she was getting into."
"Well, it'll take a rare woman to be able to handle the total package that is Jack." Pat said with a light laugh, knowing his friend was truly a unique character.
