Meeting That Had to Take Place
Who: Jack and Devon
Where: Avarice
When: Friday Night, Oct. 23rd
Jack tapped his fingers lightly against the bar, more out of random jitteriness than anything else. Their big show had come and gone, and now all sorts of things seemed to be rolling in. All good things, but it felt like it was a lot at once. He sipped at his beer as he mused over what would be happening soon. Tour, CD sales, all sorts of things that he had spent his life working toward.
Meanwhile, Devon had finally gotten something he'd long wanted to, something intimately related to Jack: his daughter, Meredith. Since beginning to date her, Devon had found himself growing protective not only of the girl, but of her father as well. The vampire silently walked over, slipping onto the bar stool beside him. "Evening, Jack."
Jack actually jumped. "Well, evening," he said, catching his breath. "I'm starting to think that all of you need to wear bells around your necks before I eventually have a heart attack."
"I must say, the lot of us would be far less intimidating were we to wear bells. Children may even laugh at us." He smirked, pleased at how happy the man looked. "Things are good, I take it?"
"Yeah, they're good," Jack said. "I would think that you would like to be less intimidating." The man was probably old enough to be some sort of ancestor, and yet he looked younger than Jack himself. It was odd to think about.
"So you know, Jack... I don't know what type of guys Meredith usually dates..." he winced then, remembering Ben. "Ok, I guess I *do* know the type she usually dates... but what I'm saying is... despite what I am, I care deeply for her. And I'm trying to give her... the closest thing to a normal, loving relationship that I can."
"I already like you better than Ben," Jack told him. "Although I suppose that doesn't exactly say too much." Ben was a little too much like him for Jack to really like him dating his daughter. Yeah, even Jack had fatherly urges. Who knew? "I think that's exactly what she needs."
"Way it sounds, most people like cancer more than they like Ben right now." Not that he was exactly fond of the wolf, but he knew where *his* dislike came from, and it had nothing to do with the two slayers. "I love her a lot, Jack. I know what we are.. and that we shouldn't be able to feel things like that... but I do. I just wanna take care of her."
"Ben's personal life aside...he was a bad influence on Mere. That was my issue," Jack pointed out. "If I think you're a bad influence, then that says something." He chuckled. "You do love her? That's exactly what she needs."
"I'm a weird guy, for a vampire, Jack." He sighed, explaining a little to the guitarist. "I've been around for a little over 200 years. In that time, I've dated all of four women seriously. Because love... is an important thing to me."
"You've dated more women seriously than I have," Jack pointed out. He'd been with a lot more, but dated seriously? That honor only belonged to Louise. "It sounds like it's important to you, though." He turned to Devon. "I have to ask, if only because I've never had the chance before. What are your intentions toward my daughter, Devon?" He smirked, but he did have an interest in the answer.
"My intentions?" He laughed, having not heard that question since back when he was human. "Well. Considering what we are, my intentions are to love her for as long as we exist, and to try to give her a normal, as HUMAN, a life as I can."
"Never thought I'd actually get to ask that, so figured I'd use my one chance," Jack said, laughing. "So, the two of you are really serious then, aren't you?"
"Can't speak for Meredith... but I know I am." He worried, honestly, that with how wild of a girl Mere was, that she might eventually grow bored with his more mild-mannered ways.
"She really likes you, Devon," Jack said. "When she talks about you, she gets a look on her face that I haven't seen...," since Louise, "...well, for a very long time. I think she's serious, too."
"I hope so." He smiled softly, and clapped the other man on the back. "And... I don't pretend to know what's going on between yourself and Louise, but... if she hurts you, either of you, let me know. And I'll take care of it."
"I don't think she will, but I understand your concern," Jack said. "Mere barely wants to talk about her, which I understand. We went for years thinking that she had just left. It's a hard thing to let go of."
"I'm not sure what to make of her yet." Devon sighed, a little torn between his fears and wanting to see the Delanys happy. "I just know I'll take care of you both."
Jack nodded. "Thanks," he said to him. "I really appreciate that."
