Sneaking Off
Who: Ash and Lucy
Where: The Grove @ The Ephemeral Gardens
When: Saturday night, during the reception (October 17)
This had been just... an amazing day for Ash. He got to see hiw sister finally marry the man of her dreams, and look so beautiful and classy doing it. He got to look into the crowd while giving her away and see his Lucy, looking like an absolute vision, and know she was his and his alone... and now, he was at the reception, dancing with her, holding her thin, pale body in his arms, looking into those gorgeous doe-eyes. Today at least? Life was good. "Lucy? I swear to you... all of this? This is gonna be us one day. I have no doubt at all. And then, you'll somehow find a way to look even better than you do today."
In Ash's arms, everything felt perfect. "It really was a pretty ceremony," Lucy told him, her gaze straying to the happy couple. "They look like they were made for each other." Glancing shyly back up to Ash, she tilted her head a little, her blue eyes asking the question before the words ever left her lips. "Do you think we look like that when we're together?" Reaching up, she brushed his hair back from his forehead and then slipped her arms around him to tug him closer.
"I have no doubts at all. Like my sister said to Pat: you're my heart, Lucy." He set his palms at her hips, swaying her to the music. "You're what gets me from one day to the next." He knew it sounded cliche, but he meant it. His steely eyes looked into those innocent ones of hers, and just softened, the love overwhelming him. "God, Lucy... Not even trying to go to a bad place, but... I would literally die for you."
His words moved her more than she could say and she reached up to rest a palm lightly against his cheek. "Good thing that's unnecessary. I would never want to lose you like that. Well, I mean, I'd never want to lose you in general, but even more...like that." Rambling? Of course. But the bottom line was that she loved him. "I'm so glad you're here, Ash. That we're together. I...I didn't think I could be this happy." And for a Van Warren? That was saying A LOT.
"We made the mistake of breaking up once. You made the mistake of leaving, I made the mistake of not going after you." He smiled, kissing the tip of her nose. "We learned from our mistakes. We're forever now. Until you become a famous rock star and decide to trade up for some hot young actor or something." He said it with a playful enough tone, luckily.
She laughed loudly, a light, tinkling sound, and hugged him tighter. "Never. Don't you know us rock stars love our bad boys?" She winked at him and then kissed him sweetly. "Not that you're bad. You're really the best of the best. And I'm lucky to have you." She really believed it, too. She was constantly amazed by Ashton. So being with him? There couldn't possibly be anything better than that. Not even rock stardom.
"Wanna go for a walk?" He looked over, and saw his sister pretty much completely lost in her new husband's eyes as they danced. "I don't think Patience will notice if we sneak off for a little bit, just to check the place out. It's really beautiful and romantic."
Lucy grinned and grabbed his hand, almost running as she tugged him away from the dancers and into the shadows of the garden. "Thought you'd never ask." There were small lights scattered here and there to illuminate the path, but nothing that really dispelled the feeling of being isolated once they were far enough away that the strains of music were dulled.
"I know everyone ends up thinking about marriage when they're in a wedding, but I really can't help it." He laughed, clutching her hand and holding it to his chest. Looking out at the lights that traced the path, he felt like he was looking out into their future. "I kept watching them, watching Pat slip that ring onto my sister's finger... and all I could do was smile and imagine the day that it's us up there."
It should have scared her to hear him talking so seriously about their future, but she knew as well as he did that it was inevitable. One day, it really would be the two of them. But...much like David and the bike...it was just a matter of waiting it out. "I was talking to a friend of mine the other day...about, you know, the future. Our future."
"Really?" He wasn't sure why that surprised him... maybe his own insecurities. "And what did you have to say about it?" He still felt occasionally like he couldn't possibly end up with such a beautiful young thing. No way. But then common sense kicked in, and he remembered how mutual their love was.
Smiling, Lucy tugged on his hand, leading him even further away from the party, towards the shadows of an old tree and the soft, grassy patch of ground beneath that was littered with beds of pale flowers that looked silvery blue beneath the moonlight. "I told her that you're the guy I'm gonna marry someday. She'd asked if it was serious...or if I was serious about you...or...something. Whatever. And the first thing that popped into my head was that...this is forever. I love you, Ash."
"You know I love you too. I think my sister knows this is forever too." He snickered then, rolling his eyes. "She already gave me the warning about how we better not go and do anything 'stupid' too soon."
"What's her definition of 'stupid'?" Like she didn't have a pretty good idea. Lucy knew they were too young to do anything like get married. It wasn't even legal for her and there was no way her parents would give their permission. Getting engaged, on the other hand...might seem like they were jumping the gun, but they'd both already admitted that it was going to happen sooner or later. Not that she WANTED to be engaged. But not that she'd say 'no' if he ever asked. It was just...kind of weird...but not. She couldn't even drive yet and she was thinking about these heavy, life-altering things? It made her grin again. "I don't need a piece of paper to tell me something I already know. So...whether that's stupid or not, I don't know."
"Way I see it... we have time." He gave her his most charming grin, the one he knew got her every time. "I mean... it's not like either of us are going anywhere." His prediction had come true, at least for him, anyway: she was the most gorgeous girl here. In his eyes, not one other woman at the wedding could even compare.
"I'm not going anywhere," Lucy echoed, reiterating it even though she knew she didn't really have to. She'd left him once and couldn't fathom doing it again. Not just because she was determined to be stronger this time around, but because things between them had changed. It had been so innocent before - well, mostly - and new, and it had come on so, so fast. What they had now was deeper than anything she'd ever felt and while running away had been hell before, she didn't doubt that being without him again would simply be...unbearable.
"Plus," he said, just trying to lighten the mood a bit. "Doesn't hurt knowing that walking into any event with you automatically makes me pretty much the envy of every straight man in attendance."
Laughing softly, she planted her hand lightly in the center of his chest and pushed him up against the tree. Her body followed and she pressed against him, her hands drifting down to settle lightly at his waist. "How'd I get to be so lucky, huh? That day in the cafeteria? Walking up to you was probably the best decision I ever made."
"I like to think our own decisions had less to do with us being together as much as.... fate intervened." He believed it, too. With every fiber of his being. "Soulmates, you know? We were just... meant to be"
"You might be right. But I'm not lying. It took a lot of courage for me to go up to you. You were just...so...SO cute and I sounded like a bumbling, babbling idiot," and she probably did right now, too, but he'd gotten used to it...or she thought he had...and she wasn't as nervous about it anymore, "and I just knew you were going to look at me and think, 'Oh, gee, what's up with the weird pink girl?'" Pink...because of her tendency to blush a lot. Like now, although she was saved by the cover of darkness.
"Actually..." he corrected her, smirking with remembrance. "My initial thought was 'is this a prank?', because I remember thinking no girl as gorgeous as you was going to come over to talk to the broody quiet guy."
"Um, the HOT broody quiet guy," Lucy reminded him with a quick kiss. "Do you have any idea how...sexy...you are? And when you smile? It just makes everything inside of me feel happy. I mean...not THAT kind of happy...well, sometimes THAT kind of happy...but usually, just...you know...regular happy. But like, really, really happy."
"That was one of the cutest rambles I've heard come outta you in a while." He couldn't help it. He adored when she blurted out her typical rants. "Between being here with you, looking like this... seeing my sister so ecstatic... this is honestly the best day of my life."
With another kiss to his lips, she slipped her arms around him and pressed her cheek lightly to his. "You're gonna have a lot more really good days, Ash. I know it."
"As long as you're with me? Every single one will be." He winked to her, and just held her tightly to him, thinking of everything that had happened recently. "We should do something for Gwen. I just... I feel so horrible for her. She looked out for me when Patience was gone."
The blonde nodded, even though she continued to relax against him. "Somehow, I don't think a Sugar Fairy Shooter is going to solve this one. Even a supersized one." She was quiet for a while, trying to think of something that might help Gwen. She didn't feel like she should be biased, since Chloe was friends with both...and the whole band thing...but she could feel bad for Gwen. That was only human. "Maybe all she needs is time. And friends. Just...be there for her the way she was for you." There wasn't much Lucy could offer. After all, she wasn't special quite the way everyone else seemed to be.
"This whole thing though... the setting, the lights..." he turned her around, so that her back was to him, and he clasped his hands over her tummy. "It's really all so romantic, isn't it?"
Leaning back against him, she rested her head against his shoulder and took it all in. "It really, really is. You know...." She hesitated for a second, biting her lip, not sure she should say what was on her mind. But she forged ahead anyway. "Just...from some of the things I heard before tonight...I really...." She grimaced, wanting to smack herself for even bringing it up. "I just...didn't think...your sister was the type to like...this...kind of thing." Oh yeah. She'd handled that gracefully.
"I know what you mean, actually. It kinda surprised me too. Patience is... a little rough around the edges at times. But she really came through with this whole thing." Hell, he knew as much as the next person that his sister wasn't always a paragon of class.
"Well, it was her wedding," Lucy decided. "I think every girl wants it to be...kinda...special. More than just the regular every day special." If that were true, there was NO telling what she'd eventually come up with when it was time for them to tie the knot.
"Yeah.. and she deserved it. God knows she's been through enough." He looked back toward the rest of the group, still dancing and partying, and sighed. "We should probably get back. If Patience notices we're missing, she's gonna kick my ass."
"She's not going to notice we're missing," Lucy told him with an indulgent little smile, even though she stepped away and reached for his hand so that they could walk back together. "She's only got eyes for Pat tonight."
"Yeah... and as stupid as it sounds... I wanna see it." He blushed as he said it, feeling like a wuss. "I want these memories, of seeing her so happy. I've waited for this my entire life."
"That doesn't sound stupid. It sounds really sweet. You care about her a lot. That's a good thing, Ash." She squeezed his hand as they started back.
"And speaking of special events... I can't wait until your birthday... I've got something really special planned for you." And he left it at that. He knew surprises tended to drive her nuts, and he found it adorable when she got flustered....
"What?!?" He couldn't just say something like that and then...not say any more. "What kind of surprise? What are you planning?" Of course, if he told her, it would negate the whole surprise part. Still, she tugged on his hand, bouncing as she walked, flashing him a few wide-eyed glanced. "Pleeeaaaassseeee?"
"Trust me... it'll be worth the wait. Obviously, I can't afford to do anything TOO spectacular, but I'm still planning something really nice for you." Damn those eyes, though. They were almost enough to make him break.
She pouted...hardcore...but knew that if he said it'd be worth the wait, it would be. But still. "Gahhh." She flashed him a grumpy little grin. "Between you and Rachelle and David, I don't even know how I'm gonna LIVE until my birthday. I'm just gonna DIE of curiosity!"
"I wouldn't suggest that. Because then, I'd just have to tap into the darkest of my powers to find a way to bring you back to me." And that grin he gave... it was chilling in a way, because while he teased... there was that hint of truth to it. That he'd really go to any dark place to keep himself from ever losing her again.
Was she afraid of that look? Oddly enough, no. Reaching up, she caressed his cheek lightly. "You'll never have to. I'm not going anywhere. I told you that." Of course, no one knew the future for certain, but...she didn't want him thinking any dark thoughts tonight.
"Yeah you are..." he gave a mischievous grin as they approached the main section again, where everyone else was at the moment. "You're going... onto the dance floor with me. So get those feet ready."
