Trying to Get Back Used to This
Who: Mere and Devon
Where: Out and About Walking for Now
When: Thursday Evening
When Mere realized what had happened, she simply got up and walked away for right now. Was this supposed to be her reward? Getting a soul? Well, that was...weird. She felt strangely...human, right now. Even though her heart still didn't beat, even though she still wasn't warm, she felt a lot like she did before this whole 'vampire' thing happen.
Of course, she wasn't sure what to think of that. Would she still have to always feed on cow blood? (By the way, still gross.) Would she buy from blood banks? She still felt really, really bad for what she had done these past few months, but she felt strangely at ease now. Paige was taken care of; she couldn't hurt anyone else.
Well, her night had officially gotten even more odder than normal. How fun.
Devon had had a sinking feeling of what her... Reward would be. Still, he'd said nothing in case he'd be wrong and freak her out without reason. But seeing her like this? The look on her face? That said it all.
Walking up to her, he spoke softly.
"Hey... You ok? Anything I can do?"
It actually took her a second to realize that Devon was talking to her. Her mind was...elsewhere at the moment.
She finally turned around and looked at him. "I really don't know," she answered honestly. "I'm not sure what to think of this."
He felt a little awkward, to tell the truth. While he knew Meredith had been through quite the ordeal, he still wasn't used to seeing Mere as anything other than the snarky, slightly devious, twinkle-in-her-eye hellion that he met back in Sunnydale.
"Mere? I may not be the dream guy you'd like to be with right now... but still, talk to me. I want to be here for you. Tell me what I can do for you here."
She actually looked at him when he said something about 'not being the dream guy.' "Don't say stuff like that," she said to him simply. All sorts of emotions that she had only sort of been able to feel were rushing through her at the moment. It was actually starting to give her a headache.
"I'm not trying to shut you out, Devon. You should know better than that." She paused for a moment, as if thinking. "I just don't really know how to put anything that I'm thinking into words. Maybe just...be with me for a while?"
"I've waited this long..." he said with a gentle smile. "Waiting for you to ditch Wolf Boy... you really think I'd mind staying with you now?" He just stepped to her, draping an arm over her shoulders with a smile. "Seriously... there's no place I'd rather be than with you."
"Well, Wolf Boy is ditched," she said to him. "Do you want to...in a few days, of course, go out?" Well, if she was going to do this, she was going to do it right, and semi-normal, even. "Not to dinner, because that would be extra strange, and a little creepy, but something, you know?" Babble was strange for her.
Anywhere you wanna go... name it." His voice was so smooth, calm... it was as if he possessed some inner zen that rarely existed in his kind. "I mean that."
"Let me think about it, then," she said. "Something other than a club, though. I know, leaves so little in LA." She laughed a little, sounding strangely like herself while she was still human. "Right now I think just a walk is in order, though."
"No problem... " He took her hand in his, still trying not to worry. For some reason... now that she was his equal, he felt strangely inadequate around her, like he was just something to hold her over until she found someone better. "Anyplace in particular you'd like to walk to?"
"Not anything in particular," she admitted. "Just feeling like going for a walk with you." She turned and smiled at him. "Feel up to it?"
"Again... nothing I'd rather do." Really, he was just thrilled that she'd been able to clean up the whole Paige mess, and still come back to him NOT in an ashtray. "You know... whatever's going through your head right now... you can talk to me. You know I love you... but in case you haven't figured it out yet... I'm also here to help guide you."
"Let me figure out how to put into words how I feel," she said, letting the silence fall between them for a few moments before speaking again. "It's sort of like...I don't know. I thought I was still feeling things before, but now it's like, magnified by infinity? It's really, really intense."
"It's a lot to adjust to. I'm not... quite the same. It's hard to describe what I am. I was rewarded, you could say, myself. But not with a soul. Because of who I was in my past life... I was given a sense of serenity... something akin to a soul, but not as pure or intense. It's like... the urges are always there, and they destroy me. But I have this... sense about me constantly calming me, and telling me NOT to give in." He squeezed her hand lightly, having never told anyone exactly what he was before. "So... yeah. I can understand what you're going through."
"I'm glad that someone can," she admitted. "You're really the only person that I can relate to." Not just the vampire part, apparently. No, also the 'different than normal' part as well, it seemed. "I'm really not sure what to make of this."
"What's happened to you... isn't unheard of. There have been several others, either rewarded or cursed with a soul. How they got them, and whether or not they can LOSE them... varies." He stopped, turning to sweetly kiss her on the forehead. "Currently, along with yourself, we know of two others in existence."
"Really? And here I thought I was special," she joked. "So, who are they? Can I lose this again, or is it permanent?" Probably something worth finding out.
"One is here in Los Angeles right now. Name's Angel. Fancies himself some dark avenger, helping people in need like some kind of superhero. The other... her name's Natalia. Getting her soul drove her just a little batty. We're not sure where she is right now." Funny how, if he were human, one could almost imagine Devon as a watcher.
"I met Natalia a few times," Mere said. "She was quite with the battiness." Well, she was nuttier than a candy bar, actually, but that was neither here nor there. "Never met an Angel, though." She giggled. "What kind of name is that, anyway? Might as well call himself 'Batman.'"
"Yeah. Well..." Cutely enough, Devon seemed almost jealous of the other vampire. "He's all dark and broody, and really, all he needs is the damned costume."
"Probably has one that he's just waiting to break out," she said with a slight laugh again. She was starting to sound more and more like her human self. Sort of weird, that. "Probably has wings and everything." Really, who named themselves 'Angel?'
"Apparently he's considering working with the Watcher's Council. I dont know the details yet, but I know Mr. Giles has been in talks with him." Seeing how absurd Meredith seemed to find Angel's reputation relaxed him a little. Who knew? Maybe she was ready to be with a boring, laid-back type now.
"Could always use more people there, even if they come off as a little silly," she said with a grin. She leaned against him a little for a second. "I wonder if there's an ice cream place open?"
"Mere?" He laughed, shaking his head. "It's 1am. I really don't think we're gonna find a Baskin Robbins open right now, unless you know someplace that caters to vamps."
She shrugged. "Oh well, just had a craving," she said. "And I thought you said we could go anywhere." Now she was just teasing him.
"Well... if it wasn't for that darned soul of yours, you could just break into one and make your own... damn shame, huh?" Yeah, two could play this game.
She snorted. "And you'd frown upon that and be all 'that's naughty, Mere'," she pointed out to him. "And then you'd have to spank me, which actually sounds fun. Where's a Baskin Robbins?"
"No. Way." He laughed, not altogether sure she WAS joking. "I'm sure I could find other reasons to spank you, if it means that much..."
She laughed. "Well, then what are we doing out here if you could find so many reasons to spank me?" she asked playfully.
Devon just stared at her... a comedic sense of urgency seeming to come to him. "...let's go."
