New school year, new friends
Who: Lucy and Cassie
Where: Reagan High
When: Monday morning
In what felt like a vastly more cruel, Apocalypse Now type of boot camp, it was the first day of Senior Year for Cassie Allen. All fifteen years of her. At the same age most girls were about to be sophomores, Cassie was preparing to matriculate. Yeah, like she needed MORE reasons to be unpopular. Still... the little thing was simply indestrutible with her cheer, even when acknowledging just how bad her life could be. So, ignoring a few hurtful comments thrown her way, the skinny blonde went to sit down in front of her locker. As classes weren't to begin for about a half hour or so, mst kids went to the cafeteria to hang out, or the gym... you know, the ones who HAD friends here. Cassie dug through her bookbag (which cutely weighed, probably, as much as SHE did) for a novel. That should last her a solid half hour...
Although she'd only attended for part of the year, Lucy's face was familiar to many in the halls of Reagan High. For one, she was known for having dated Ashton Kowalski, the guy who always dressed in black and didn't have very many friends. It hadn't made sense to many at the time, since she was so extroverted and bubbly and he was so...not. Still, she was back this year and Kowalski was out and that meant Lucy Van Warren was a free agent. Or so it seemed from the outside. Truth was, being back in the school just made her think about Ash and thinking about Ash...led to absolutely nothing good. Or healthy. Or, no, that wasn't what she meant. He...oh crapness. Couldn't she stop thinking about him for even a single second?!? She waved to a couple of people who smiled and called her name, and it was when she was glancing back at one particularly cute guy that she couldn't seem to place that The Accident happened. Her foot hit SOME kind of heavy monstrosity and then next thing she knew, she was headed face-first toward the bank of lockers. Luckily, she had the presence of mind to catch herself, but the sharp pain in her wrist told her maybe she should have just let herself get the black eye. Her hands were REALLY important to her. "Okay. That wasn't embarrassing at all. No one saw. No one's looking. And OW!" Only then did she register the pain in her toe from stubbing it on.... She glanced down at the huge booksack sitting on the floor. "Oh my GOD. Whose babies are stuffed in that thing?!?!"
Cassie sat there, beside the bag, looking utterly MORTIFIED. "Oh. My. GOD... I'm sooo sorry!" Great. One look at the girl told Cassie she was loaded, a total fashion whore, and prrrrrrobably the type of girl who could make Cassie's senior year even more miserable. "I figured everyone was, you know... elsewhere." Yeah, good one, Cass.
The sound of the voice pulled Lucy's attention. Now why hadn't she realized there was a girl there? Maybe because she was hidden behind the freaking massive boulder of a backpack. "No big," she said, reaching down to rub her foot. That's what she got for giving into vanity and wearing those open-toed Jimmy Choo's to school. Idiot! "Do you honestly carry that thing around? I mean, you could stick a steering wheel in that thing and ride it."
"Yeah." She said with an embarrassed nod. "Well, technically I don't carry it as much as I drag it around very slowly, but that really wasn't what you were asking. Sorry." So... what the hell did she say here? To try to get on the girl's good side here? "So. Yeah. Nice... nice shoes?"
"Oh, God no. They hurt like hell! Heck! I meant to say HECK. They...no. I don't know why I wore them. I wish I'd worn my Converses. They'd be a ton more comfortable, but they don't do as much for my legs, see?" She did have long legs, for being not exceptionally tall. Between the heels and the cute little plaid skirt that was a fashion homage to that whole Catholic schoolgirl thing, her legs did look pretty good, even if she said so herself. "I'm kinda looking forward to gym, just so I can change. But then I'll just sweat and I don't like sweating. But, I mean, the toe. It's fine. Not broken. And I'll live. And really, you should think about getting a wagon or something. I don't think that's good for your back. I'm Lucy, by the way. Hi."
Well, color Cassie surprised. This girl was having a SpazRamble that could possibly challenge her own. "Oh. I'm Cassie. Also known as the Official Punching Bag of you and your friends. Nice to meetcha!" She said it all with that chipper, pleasant tone.
"Oh, okay," Lucy nodded, as if it made all the sense in the world. "Are you marketing that, or...?" A grin broke through and she shrugged with a shake of her blonde head. "I don't really take my anger out on people, so you might be a little let down. I prefer to rock it out, you know?" It was possible the girl didn't know, but that never dawned on Lucy. "Besides. My hand-eye coordination isn't so great all the time. Punching bags aren't my thing. They tend to hit me back."
Unable to help herself there, Cassie just giggled, and that bright little smile flashed. "Ok... you're cool. So I should probably warn you that hanging around me? REEEEAAAALLY won't do much for your friend-count in these parts. So if you ever wanna throw something at me for image's sake, I'll totally understand."
Lucy had to laugh at that. HARD. "No. I'm sorry. Not laughing at you. Just. If you knew who I was dating at the end of last year...well. I don't think I'm that worried about what people think of who I hang out with. Besides. I kinda have a pretty big buffer." She lowered her voice conspiratorially. "See, I'm a rock star!" And then she smiled widely. "Well, I'm GOING TO BE a rock star. My sister already is and she's pretty much the coolest person I know. Aside from my brother. Maybe a little cooler, but I never tell him that. It might hurt his ego."
"Oh really?" Cassie asked with a little squeak. Now, this was cool. "Who's your sister?" Whole new can of worms being opened here, but hey... Cassie loved to talk.
"Chloe Van Warren!" Lucy beamed proudly. "She's in, well, gosh, it always seems like she's in a gazillion bands at once, but she's a totally butt-kickin' drummer like...WOAH!" Her eyes got big. "She also owns The Sugar Shack, which is pretty much the most a-frikkin'-mazing thing EVER."
"GET OUTTA TOWN!" Cassie squealed with a laugh. "Ever notice Shooting Star Comics? Riiiiight next door to the Sugar Shack?"
"I think I've seen it, yeah!" She nodded, trying to remember if she had, knowing she had, but also knowing that when she was headed to the Shack, she was always focused on getting a fix.
"I happen to co-own it, thanksabunch!" The young girl announced proudly. "My foster sister and I opened it together. My priiiiide and joy!"
"Sweet! You own your own store. That's totally killer! Do you ever hang at The Shack? I always see tons of people there. It's a really cool place and, I mean, sugar...RIGHT?!?" It boggled her mind how some people just...didn't eat sweets. She'd probably die from Diabetes or something, but that didn't matter in the meantime.
Cassie blushed slightly there, shaking her head. "Chloe's nice enough to bring me some stuff over now and then if I call and ask nicely... I don't really hang out there though. Too many 'popular' kids do. I gotta see them enough here, you know?"
Now, that made Lucy's smile turn upside down. "Is it really that bad?" She had no idea what it was like to feel like an outcast. Or, worse, ridiculed. "You shouldn't let it stop you, though. I mean, who cares what people think, right? I figure, if people are staring, they must like what they see!" Her grin returned then and she giggled. "Seriously, though, you should actually come INSIDE the place. Nobody there bites." Well...maybe...that wasn't so true...actually.
She dropped the fake smile for once, and just kinda nodded. "Yeah. It is. I'm 15 and a SENIOR. Kids like to pick on nerds to begin with... but a 15 year old senior? I'm like, Queen Nerd of Nerdonia. Luckily, because of the comics store, the other nerds at least love me."
"You're a SENIOR?!? GET OUT!!! Ohmigod, you are so LUCKY!" Leaning against the lockers, she shook her head, still not understanding. "I bet they're just jealous. I mean, seriously. I WISH I could be a senior now. I'm so READY to be done with this whole school thing. I just wanna...ROCK. Play all night and sleep all day or, well, no, 'cause I like the sun and it's fun to do stuff during the day and, I mean it, you're totally going to come with me to The Sugar Shack after school. I...." She stopped then, her momentum losing a little steam. Yeah, she was pretty and popular because of it and because of who her sister was and because she could really shred and because she was uber-friendly, but...her closest friends? The people she really cared about? She'd burned them. It didn't feel good, but it made her wary of getting really close to anyone else. Cassie seemed nice, though. REAL. She liked real people. "You just should. If not today, then definitely later this week. It won't be awful, I promise, and if anyone does anything or says anything...I'll kick 'em out!" Because she was SO tough!
"You'd really do that for me?" Cassie asked, feeling a little bewildered. This girl was being SO nice, and they'd only just met! "Wow... I doubt a girl like you is into comics, but seriously feel free to come to my store anytime. We have game nights, and all kinds of cool get-togethers. You know. Of dorks." She laughed.
"Why wouldn't I?" Lucy wanted to know. Being NICE just sort of came naturally to her. She didn't know any other way to be. Still, she wasn't sure about the whole comics thing. "I mean, I only know like...you know...Superman and Wonder Woman and Batman and The Hulk and The X-Men...but...what kind of games? I like games!"
"Oh man, we have tons of fun! We have nights where we have roleplaying groups come in, we have nights where we play card games, we even do a video game night where we hook up a couple of Playstations and try out a bunch of new games!" Yeah, she was geeking out now. The store was seriously her baby. "I'm even thinking about having nights where some of us stay after closing and watch crappy horror movies."
"Roleplaying?" she echoed. "Like...Dungeons and Dragons or....?" She wasn't sure she wanted to know where else that could go. "But, you know, video games are cool! I love Grand Theft Auto!" Which...probably wasn't comic related too much? And...probably would have surprised a lot of people. Yeah. So she had an inner pimp that liked to smack a bitch around every now and then. So what? "And horror movies rock socks! Do you have any favorites???"
"Duuuuude." Cassie said with a loud laugh. Yeah, she knew her horror movies. Big time. "Last week we did a Friday The 13th marathon. We ate popcorn and ice cream, and yelled 'Yep, they're dead!' every time someone had sex." She smirked and shook her head. "We should hang out at lunch if you want. It'd beat just... skateboarding around the parking lot."
"Totally. And I love Friday the 13th, but Johnny Depp really is so hot in the first Nightmare on Elm Street. Even though he bites it. It was such a great way to go out!" She laughed and raked her fingers through her hair, her eyes catching on her diamond accented Cartier watch. The first bell was going to ring any second. "So you wanna meet in the caf for lunch?" She really...REALLY...didn't want to go in there alone to face the memories.
"You have noooo idea how great that sounds. My b..." she stopped herself, and grumbled. "My ex-boyfriend, anyway, graduated last year. I really only have one good friend here, and she has other friends to see, too. Can't spend all her time with me, right?" She shuddered comically, and winced. "Besides. It's never good to face the food here alone."
"Oh, God, you too?!?" Lucy made a face. "My...ex...graduated, too. And, yeah. I just...." Well, she just had no one else to blame but herself, that's what she 'just' - but she didn't have to like it. "Anyway. I'll meet you at lunch and we can make a list of all the best horror movies and then we can plan a night to just...sit around and do nothing but gorge ourselves on popcorn and candy and veg out. I mean. If you want to."
"Anytime." For her part, little Cassie honestly looked as though Lucy had just made her day. "I... I know you could probably hang with anyone you want. So, you know.. thanks. For pickin' me. It means a lot." And it did. Cassie really only had Dawn and Andrew to call good friends... and Andrew had been so weirded out lately...
She laughed and shook her head. Yeah, she knew it wouldn't be hard to make new friends this year, but why that group couldn't include Cassie, she had no idea. "You're kinda silly, you know that?" She smiled with she said it though and it was so not meant as an insult. "I'll catch you in a few hours. Um. And really. Think about what I said. You might wanna get a wagon or...a tractor trailer...for that thing."
"Yeah, yeah..." Cassie giggled, hopping to her feet. "Get outta here, goofball." She felt happier than she had in a while at the prospect of school. Maybe senior year wouldn't be that bad after all!
