Late Night Visits...And Why Ben Is a Bonehead
Who: Skylar and Ben
Where: The Hospital, Maternity Ward
When: Late Saturday Night
It was sort of late. Skylar had finally convinced Gwen to go home for the night and sleep in a real bed. She'd been here pretty much constantly the past few days, and it was time for her to go home. Besides, Skylar herself would be home tomorrow as well. Her and Bella. She had convinced the nurse to let her keep the baby in the room with her. Mother/daughter bonding. Bella barely cried at all, and seemed to sleep pretty well. Skylar actually had her in the sorta crib thing that the hospital provided, and was watching some TV with the volume down low so as not to wake her.
Then, despite it being later than most hospitals allow visitors, there was a soft, gentle knock at her door. Ben stood there, carrying what looked to be a huge bag overflowing with gifts, and an actually sweet, boyish grin on his face. "Knock knock..."
Skylar grinned at the look on his face. "Come on in, you dope," she said. Only she'd really get away with saying something like that to him. "What are you doing here so late?"
"What can I say? Even in a hospital, money talks. And I had... other things to take care of earlier." Like getting dumped and making some business calls. But alas. "Had to come see the prettiest girl I know. Although from the looks of the little one, you might have some competition. She's gorgeous, Skylar." He smiled sweetly. "Just like you."
She laughed. "She seems to have gotten my everything, so far at least," she said. "I'm not surprised you were able to bribe your way past the nurses station. The nurse there is pretty nice, anyway."
"Yeah, nice..." he sighed, "But TV is a tease. I didn't see one sexy nurse yet. 'ER' can kiss my ass." He looked at her, and for a moment he looked sad, as if seeing her like this was the final nail in whatever coffin he had put his hopes of them ever being together in. "Motherhood looks good on you. You have a glow to you, ya know?"
"I'll just be glad when I can get my figure back," she admitted. "Thanks, though." She didn't gain much weight, but it's always that last little bit that is the real bitch to get rid of. "ER isn't exactly realistic, you know?"
"If you're going to tell me George Clooney isn't a real doctor, you're gonna break my everlovin' heart, girl." He walked in further now, using his animal grace to sit down on the bed beside her without any noise, to awaken the baby. "So... what's going on with Pat? You planning on having him help raise the baby? Or just acknowledging him as the sperm donor and going on your merry way?"
"Oh, you bet your ass he's gonna be there to help raise Bella," Skylar said with an affirmative nod. "He'd doesn't get the milk without paying the price for it."
"Good. Pat... he's a good friend, whether I treat him as such or not. And while you all agreed this was for the best, you know it'd kill him if he didn't get to be in the kid's life." Ben smirked, trying to put on his front again. "Not everyone can be a bastard like me, you know."
She snorted. "No, not anyone else can quite be you." She looked over at Bella. "No, Bella should know her Daddy as well. And even her step-mother, whether I'm comfortable around her or not."
"She seems like a decent gal. Definitely loves Pat. First words out of her mouth when she realized she was alive again were about him." He snickered then, giving an appreciative nod. "Hot little piece, too."
That last line just caused Skylar to laugh. "So I've heard. Never actually met her, though. Probably have to do that soon, though."
"Of course... she doesn't hold a candle to you, but that goes kind of without saying." There was just something in his eyes tonight, a sadness. Probably residual from a mix of seeing Skylar like this and having just been dumped.
Skylar narrowed her eyes a bit at him. "What's going on?" she asked. "You're...off tonight. And don't lie to me. I *know* when you're lying."
"Just been a long night." He brushed her hair sweetly with his hand. "Mere broke up with me. And I guess it's that plus... don't punch me here... I guess a little bit of jealousy."
Skylar just blinked, taking a moment to take it all in. "Well...color me surprised," she admitted. She had honestly figured that Ben would end up doing the dumping once he confronted his own feelings. "Jealous?"
"Yeah... come on, Skylar. All joking aside, you know damned well I've carried... something... for you for a long time now. Do I know it's never gonna happen?" He nodded, laughing at himself. "But that doesn't mean it wasn't nice to think about sometime. But this... seeing you so happy... kinda pounds it home, you know?"
Skylar gave him a gentle smile. "You know, if you showed this side to more than just me, people wouldn't call you Sleazy McHorndog so much," she pointed out. "I doubt me being a mother will get rid of some of the dirty thoughts in your head, though. Now you'll just picture me in some housewife outfit." She did know how to torture him, after all. "What happened with Mere, though?"
"Nobody but Gwen calls me Sleazy McHorndog, thanks." He muttered, before shaking his head and sighing. "She... needs a better influence than me in her life, or, UNlife, right now. And she insists that there's too many feelings for Faith left over. Which I don't get, because even SHE isn't a good enough liar to say she doesn't still have feelings for the Emo Witch Boy."
"Ben, it might be odd to accept from your...well, now ex, so listen to me," Skylar started. "While Mere has no real interest in actually getting back together with Ash, you at least want to. Don't lie to me, because I see right through your bullcrap. Hell, you gave up your so called 'neutrality' because of her getting hurt. Is that not a notice or what?"
"So I love her. I've never claimed not to. But she deserves better than me, and YOU know THAT." He wasn't even self-hating... he just know who and what he was. "I'm not a good person, Skylar. And Faith deserves to be with one. But know one thing." He said, looking at her with a vengeful look that could only be borne of love, deep down. "I know she thinks Candice can be helped... but she will never have the chance. For what she did to my Faith... I will tear that bitch's throat from her neck."
"Maybe you should ask Faith what she wants, as far as you go," Skylar pointed out. "And you are a good person, even if you like to hide it under the sleaze. Besides, you're calling her 'your' Faith. Did you catch that?"
"She is mine." He said, feeling a little uncomfortable at how raw and bare he was laying his emotions in front of her. Maybe it wasn't the type of love she wanted, but he did love Skylar, on some deep personal level. And he found it exceedingly hard to put on fronts around her. "But I can never change who I am. Meredith was as decadent, as deviant, as myself. But Faith is a good girl at heart. How would you feel if Gwen was going around screwing different people all the time, and you knew if you stopped her you'd be preventing her from being herself? I don't want Faith in that position." Then he grinned. "About the ONLY position I don't want her in."
Out of either frustration or left over hormones, Skylar picked up the pillow behind her and chucked it at Ben's head. "Try talking to her about it, you jackass! Maybe she won't care. Maybe she'll join in. Hell, maybe you'll find out you are all that each other really need. You won't know until you try!" With that hissy fit, Bella woke up, whimpering. "Damnit," she muttered, reaching over to pick her up and sooth her. "Sorry, Bella, mommy's just dealing with her dunder headed friend over there." Bella seemed to perk up as soon as she was picked up, though.
"Yeah, great mommying skills there, babe." He muttered with a smirk as she woke the child. "Look. I'm... I'm gonna go check on Faith. Just take care, alright? I might be a jackass... but I'm a jackass who loves you, no matter how badly you wish that wasn't the case. So... do me a favor and cherish Gwen. If she makes you happy, never, EVER, let her go, alright?"
"At least talk to her, you bone head," Skylar insisted. "I'm tired of all of my friends being all mopey. "I'll always cherish Gwen. That's a promise. Now promise me you'll level with Faith and let her decide whether you're good enough for her instead of making decisions for her, OK?"
"Fine. I will." He sighed, knowing that he HAD to now. One thing he couldn't do is lie to Skylar. "Now... just be good mom, ok? And don't let Gwen influence the kid too much. She'll be drinking and cussing before she's three."
"I'll work on that part," Skylar said with a slight grin. "Now go away so I can feed my baby."
His eyes went a little wide there as he realized what she meant. Walking out, he mumbled loudly. "Never been so jealous of a baby before in my LIFE..."
