It's About the Power
Who: Delilah and Ash
Where: Delilah's Home
When: Monday Afternoon
Delilah fiddled with her nails as she waited for Ash to arrive. He wanted to talk to her about her power, which had her feeling more nervous than she really wanted to admit. It wasn't that she didn't think of Ash as a changed man, but...she still had her doubts. She was far from the only one, though. It was on all of the Watcher's minds, even if some of them wouldn't come clean about it. She had a slight feeling about what he really wanted, but didn't really want to voice it.
When he finally arrived, Ash looked comically nervous. He had a lot on his mind, none of which he'd opened up to anyone about. One or two of things bugging him, he's BRIEFLY mentioned to his sister, but that was it. But he sensed something about Delilah. Something not even related to her powers, that told him that more than anyone, SHE would understand. He wore one of his many jet-black suits, and rang the doorbell, clasping his hands behind his back as he waited.
Delilah got up and answered the door. "Hello Ash," she said in her clipped accent. "What can I do for you today?"
"Hey, Delilah. Sorry for intruding on your day..." He meant it, too. It was obvious from his face that he knew the other watchers mistrusted him. "I know I'm... not really the person you want in your home, and I appreciate you letting me come here. I needed to talk, and you're the only person I know who might understand."
She nodded, and moved aside so that he could come inside. "So, what is it that you'd like to talk about?" she asked, shutting the door behind him. "Would you like anything to drink? Some tea?"
"N-No, thank you." He stepped in, and sighed. "I guess.. I have two different things I wanted to talk to you about. And in the end, they connect. The first... is your power." He looked at her, his voice sounding more innocently curious than anything. "The lightning you channel... is it..." he thought of how to word it. "Does it come from within? Or are you channeling real lightning, from the sky?"
"I can pull any sort of electricity from the air, actually," she told him. "I don't believe it is an electrical charge from within, but I don't necessarily need a full lightening strike to do anything, either."
"So... you *do* need there to be actual lightning in the area? I mean.. what if you were underground somewhere? Would you be able to use your ability there?" The shame was.. he'd actually changed. He'd finally shed his past, and was becoming a respectful, mature young man.
"I've never tried something in a cave, to be honest," she said with a slight shrug. "It would be an interesting experiment, but that's just something that I don't know."
He paused, taking that in. "So... what are your thoughts about the, you know... big fight coming up? I know most of us are at least a little worried... I keep joking with Mr. Giles, saying 'remember the Alamo' every time I pass him..."
"And I'm sure that he's thrilled with that comparison," she said with a slight smirk. "I don't really know what to think of it. Something that needs to be done, I suppose? They certainly won't stop until we're all dead."
"Yeah... and that's the part that sucks." He shook his head, feeling the anger coming on again, as it did every time he thought about something happening to Buffy or Patience. "I know Buffy's going into the battle. And..." he decided to confide in her. "Look... I know what people are saying. And between us? It's true. I can't help it... I think I'm falling in love with her."
She merely shrugged at the thought of that. "It's happened in the past, although it used to be frowned upon. Then again, the old Council had some practices that tended to need a Watcher to put some emotional berth between himself and his Slayer." She looked at him. "Just don't hurt her. The poor girl has been through enough."
"See... that's why I don't really talk to the other watchers. They all think I'm some... evil thing." He shook his head, sighing. "We've all done things we're not proud of, Delilah. Every one of us. And hell... to save the life of someone I love? I can't say I wouldn't do more. And I think... in the end... you might understand me, what I have to do, more than any of the others."
She nodded. "I think I do," she said. If she were in the same situation, she might do the same. She feared it just the same, though, but she did appreciate the fact that he was at least giving her a warning.
"...you love him, don't you." He said bluntly, not even bothering to say the name. It might have been lost on the others, but Ash was experienced enough now in this shit to know unrequited love when he saw it.
That jerked her attention. "What?" she asked, a little confused, to be honest. Subject jumping was not her thing. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Yeah. You do." He said, not mocking her but giving a sad smile. "I see how you look at him, every time we're at a meeting, or he makes some joke that the rest of us roll our eyes at..."
She sighed. "Doesn't matter, though," she said. "He found the woman that rescued him. He gave up a bloody ring to get her back. No chance in hell there." She shook her head. "Best not to think about that."
"I know. I guess.. what I'm asking you is... if you could do something. Something you knew wasn't altogether right. But something that, at least in your mind, would protect him... would you do it?" He asked, his voice begging for understanding.
She nodded, turning away for a moment. "I know what you're hinting at, Ashton," she said to him, still turned away. "I know enough about black magic to figure it out." Going to the Watcher's Academy, which no longer existed, really, had taught her plenty in order to avoid it. "I can't really give permission, or it doesn't work."
"I'm sorry, Delilah. And... I hope... that when this is over, you'll forgive me." He sighed, before standing, and without asking, just placed a hand on the back of her neck, eyes going black as he literally absorbed the power right out of her. "If it's any consolation..." he said soothingly as she slid towards unconsciousness, "I promise you'll get them back."
