Her smile eased, because it was, in the end, Arthur, and no one made her smile quite like he did. "And get ourselves in a hell of a mess in the meantime, aye," she agreed, squeezing his hand right back.
A quick glance down at her body and Lexi sighed. "It feels wrong, sometimes. I always put it down to some metaphysical sexual enlightenment or something, but I think it's just because sometimes, I expected to be him." Dark eyes rose back to him and her lips pulled downward; she tugged on his hand gently, reaching out to lift his chin with her fingers, trying to meet his gaze.
"What happened," she said quietly, intently, eyes wet again but tone steady, "what I did... Arthur, I never meant to betray you. It was idiotic and selfish, but I loved you. Have always loved you in every possible way a body can love another, a soul can find a mate, and that never wavered. Through all of my mistakes, my misguided and arrogant actions, that was one truth held firm, however much I let you down in it."
