A quick sour twist in her gut, a knife stab of jealousy, and Lexi's smile got a bit too bright, a bit too hard and forced. "Oh," she said, keeping her tone light, but leaning back, away, nearly overwhelmed by the sudden wave of... Christ, she didn't even know. The way Arthur smiled, though, the happy honeymooner look, it was familiar. It was familiar in the way an old scar was, in the way you'd feel about a scab that wouldn't quite heal over. It hurt, it ached, but she recognized it, accepted it as her due. The space between who she was, though, and who she had been made it harder to hide.
"Oh, that's good," she said, still smiling, still nodding, the perfect friend, the supportive buddy. "Good. Great, even. Subletting is the wave of the future, so awesome. Great."
