A note wrapped around a black velvet jewellery box, containing a pearl and diamond bracelet. The note reads;
My dearest Anaïs,
I have begun this letter a thousand times and I still can't find the right words for what I wish to say to you.
I fear this attempt will fall far short but I wish you to have this bracelet before dinner tonight.
I love you.
I find you irresistable. I long to kiss you, to hold you in my arms. If I pulled away from you it was only to save your blushes, and what little was left of my decorum. You undo me, Anaïs. I'm helpless in the face of your beauty, reduced to a stammering wreck of a man.
If you share even a fraction of that feeling, I would be delighted to see you wear the bracelet tonight. If I have been too forward - if my affections are misplaced - then leave the bracelet in its case and I will trouble you no more.
