If people commit crimes or do wrong things, obviously justice should be done for that. I mean, if you deliberately ensorcelled someone into marrying you, that would be wrong for a wizard or witch as much as someone with veela heritage, right?
I mean, I guess that's it for me: it's not scarier than being cursed. I've been under the accidental influence, as it were, because that's my sister-in-law, and her mum. And it sounds more scary than it is. People are scared of what they don't know but the answer's not to give in to fear. It's to learn.
People are scared of creatures like dragons, too. We have to be wise with them because we can't talk to them. But half-veelas and other people who have mixed blood aren't creatures. They're people and responsible enough to follow the law, or to get help if they need it to avoid doing something wrong. And children need help, but they're children. We don't give them full rights or responsibilities because they're not ready for it yet. They're coming into readiness.
The way that article was written, and even the words people use, sound to me like the sort of Death Eater talk I heard when I was your age. "Mixed breed" isn't a word you'd use about a person. It's a word you'd use about an animal. But people with mixed blood are still people. Calling people animals, dehumanising them, is the first step to treating them like animals. That was what happened to Muggleborns in Britain during the war, where they were tried and put in prison for 'pretending to be wizards' and 'stealing magic' and so on. And they called them rats and filthy and, another word that I won't use but it was about their blood and was very nasty. Anyone who wasn't of so-called pure magical blood was frightening and to 'protect' people, the Ministry made people register, and jailed them, and eventually murdered them. And I'm not saying that anyone who uses those words means to do that, but they're giving in to the ways of people who do kill for being different.
It's a hard responsibility to have thrust on you, to help make the world right. Older folk have to work with you and on themselves too. But you lot are the future and you have to help make the world you want to live in. I'd rather see you arguing with and about things in the newspaper instead of doing what we had to do, though.
