Ford raised an eyebrow in mild surprise at that. They'd talked a bit about her family, so he had an idea of what her life had been like, but having "horse" and "help" in the same phrase had some rather specific connotations.
Somehow, the fact that she was embarrassed at her misunderstanding cancelled out of bit of his own. Maybe it was just that he could handle himself feeling bad, but he didn't want to make her feel bad. He rested his cheek against the back of the couch again, looking over at her, and gave her a bit of a smile. "You're not. I manage to do that myself pretty well, so, you know, don't worry about it. I just don't—" He waved a hand in the air between them as he stopped himself preemptively on that rambling path. "I'm just used to it, I guess. Things being difficult. Not you making them...you know, I'm just going to shut up now."
