Never in a million years would Jack have expected someone to show up in Las Vegas claiming to be his son, but then again, he wouldn't have expected to have vampires around either. He was trying to adjust to the news as best he could. Had Claire not been there to tell him that the boy was telling the truth, Jack might have rejected David all-together. After meeting David, however, Jack hated himself a little for ever considering that option. The boy was his, no doubt about it. What to do about it once Jack had accepted the news as truth (truth from David's perspective, at least), he had no idea. Though there had been a time where Jack imagined what it would like to be a father, he hadn't given the idea a second thought since Sarah left him. He convinced himself that it would be fine if he never had a child, and that he would probably be a terrible father anyway. He worked too much to keep a marriage together, so how would he be able to be a good father? The last thing he wanted was to turn out like his own father, and it was that fear that kept him from wanting to try. With David there, Jack didn't have a choice anymore. He had to try. He had to play the part, even if he didn't have any experience, even if he didn't know anything about his son. For David's sake, he had to try. It wasn't easy, but Jack was trying. Hanging out with Hurley and Charlie had been fun, but Jack knew that he and David needed some one-on-one time together, so he'd taken the teenager out for the day. He didn't have anything planned in particular; he just wanted to spend some time with David and get to know him. Even though he didn't have a son where he was from, he couldn't stand the thought of David feeling like he wasn't wanted. Jack had spent his entire life feeling like his father didn't want him, and he wasn't going to make his son feel the same way. "How are you liking Vegas so far?" he asked, glancing over at David as they sat on a bench, each with a quickly melting ice cream cone in hand. |
