What: Merlin tries to prevent Arthur's head from going KABOOM all over the couch
When: Directly after Arthur's whinging post
Where: The apartment
Rating: PG
Status: Incomplete; closed

Merlin ignored Arthur's last message and shoved his device in his pocket. He thought of knocking on the door but knew there was no way Arthur would get up to open it if his state was as bad as he claimed. Merlin just stuck his key in the lock and pushed the door open.

"Arthur?" he crossed the room to get a good look at the man on the couch, and immediately found it difficult to devise a proper insult. He really did look terrible; red-eyed and rumpled and pale as a sheet. He let out a short exhale and knelt by the couch. "Alright, more like 35 seconds, then."

Arthur's eyes fluttered close as the pain eased from his head. "Much. Thank you."

Smiling in satisfaction, Merlin rose to his feet, only to take a seat on the couch by Arthur's stomach. He reached a hand down to stroke his hair again. "Need anything else? Tea or something?"

Coherency wasn't something Arthur felt necessary and he grunted in response to the inquiry, settling into the sofa and into the sensation of fingers running through his hair. Maybe he truly was ill. Merlin didn't need to know.

Merlin snorted, though somehow not unkindly. "I'm sorry, I don't speak savage brute. You'll need to repeat that in English."

Arthur didn't even try to glare. He didn't move much either. "I'm fine. Don't move."

With a short nod, Merlin smiled, but he didn't entirely obey either. He moved enough to grab the blanket that was draped over the arm of the couch, then he spread it carefully over Arthur up to his chin. He knew from Gaius that you should never bundle up someone with a fever, even if they were shivering, but that a light blanket was okay. Then he kicked off his shoes and pulled his feet up to get more comfortable. He didn't plan on leaving Arthur for a while, not in this state. "You should try and get some rest," he told him, trying to convey with his eyes that it was less suggestion and more demand.

"I'm not ill." Arthur felt fine. Aside from the odd shiver and hot flash, and the strange sluggishness in his limbs, he felt as fine as he ever did. "Though a nap wouldn't be a bad idea."

Merlin raised an eyebrow. "Who is the physician's apprentice here?" he pointed out lightly. Arthur and his ridiculous pride, refusing to even succumb to a touch of fever. He smiled and ran his knuckles lightly along Arthur's cheek. "Good. Sleep."

"Certainly not you," Arthur grumbled, tipping his face into Merlin's cold fingers. "I haven't seen you learn a single thing from Gaius."

"Perhaps you just weren't paying attention. And I believe I told you to go to sleep." Merlin ceased the movements of his fingers, only to press a kiss to Arthur's cheek where they had been and then lay down, nudging Arthur enough so that he could slide in behind him. He secured an arm around Arthur's chest.

Arthur shifted until Merlin was done squirming around and settled back against him. Merlin was absurdly warm against his back and Arthur snuggled back into the cocoon Merlin was forming.

"There was nothing to pay attention to."

Merlin tried to make some sort of indignant huffing noise, but it turned out to be more of a laugh and anyway, his fingers were moving lightly along Arthur's chest and stomach so it was hard to make any upset seem real. "Hey, I'm the one who cured you after the Questing Beast's bite, remember? That took a lot of good, solid study and... physiciany knowledge."

"Gaius told you what you needed and you did as he told you." Arthur smirked into the sofa cushion. "Is what you mean."

Lifting his free hand, Merlin flicked the back of Arthur's ear. He didn't say anything more on the matter, suddenly realizing how the story of how he'd really saved Arthur wasn't really meant for keeping the mood light. "I've learned plenty. Like a person working on a fever needs rest, for instance," he said instead.

Arthur's smirk would not relent. "Congratulations on learning something most ten year old children know. Remind me of this later and I'll be dutifully impressed with your progress."

It was a good thing Arthur was not facing Merlin, or he might have seen the smile Merlin tried to fight off. Nevermind that Merlin's smiles were always present in his voice. "And yet, it seems to be a concept too difficult for you to grasp. I had always suspected most ten year old children succeeded you in intelligence," he retorted, then added, "Oh, and you probably shouldn't talk, either. I'm certain I heard a hint of hoarseness just then. Best be on the safe side and keep your mouth shut."

It would have been humorous if it hadn't been true. Arthur carefully rubbed at his throat, dreading the onset of whatever this was going to turn into. He wasn't a fool. He knew he was becoming ill. His arms and legs were sore and sweat was slowly beginning to bead beneath his nose and at his hairline and Merlin was blasting more heat than a brush fire. Merlin who Arthur found to be perpetually ten degrees colder than he was on any give day.

It mostly had been a joke, but Merlin saw Arthur's hand at his throat and knew he hadn't been far off. He let his voice go softer, serious again, "Go to sleep. I'll go get some things to help you feel better and I'll be back when you wake up." He started to shift, ready to push himself up.

Which would have gone better if Arthur hadn't been pressing him back into the sofa with his entire body. Arthur found Merlin's hand and clasped it, pulling his scrawny, limber friend half on top of him like a human blanket.

"Wait."

So Merlin waited, looking down at Arthur with slight surprise. "Hmm?" he asked, squeezing Arthur's hand.

Merlin smiled. "Oh. I thought... I wasn't sure if I was making you too hot or something." He brushed some of Arthur's hair from his dampened forehead and started to settle back down. "I'll stay."

Arthur rubbed his face against the cushion in lieu of using his hand. "Why would I have bothered asking you to stay?"

He had a point. "I don't know. Shut up and close your eyes before I put you into magically induced sleep. Trust me, you don't want that. They all last for a hundred years at the very least." He grinned into Arthur's neck.

Arthur always has a point. Even if that point, every so often, make zero sense to any person in the room.

"You'd miss me," Arthur slurred.

Merlin laughed softly and leaned over to kiss Arthur's jaw. He didn't really have to answer, but he did anyway. "Yeah. Maybe a little." He settled again, one arm around Arthur's waist and one hand resting against his back.

Arthur didn't bother reopening his eyes while Merlin unwound against him, settling in like he could stay for some time.

"You're warm."

It didn't sound like a condemnation, and they'd already established that h e wasn't making Arthur less comfortable, so Merlin just smiled and shut his own eyes, relaxing. "You have a fever. Everything is warm."

Grunting, Arthur tried to shuffle his way under Merlin as far as their bodies would allow, breathing in and out in slow measure until soon enough, he stopped thinking all together and slept.
