"No. Thank you. My roommate Caroline is home. I won't be alone," she said. She didn't actually want to talk to Caroline. It had nothing to do with Caroline herself but Caroline just wasn't the same kind of vampire as Lissa. She didn't understand her struggle the way that Rose and Christian and especially Adrian had. She was superpowered, it just so happened that her superpower didn't make her physically powerful and sometimes it could drain the life right out of her. Because Lissa was alive, unlike most vampires.
"I used a lot of magic today trying to heal those people in the waiting room," she said quietly to Caleb, as if she somehow sensed that there was a third party in the car listening to them. Lissa had always been very sensitive and while she sensed something off, she blamed it on her own harried state of mind rather than on the less obvious ghost.
"Sometimes it takes it's toll on me. I'm sorry you had to meet me for the first time like that but I am grateful to you for taking me home."
Chances were that if Caleb hadn't shown up, Lissa would have moved on from her thumb to her arm. She would have dug the scalpel in as hard as she could just to watch the red stuff drip down her arm and off of her fingers. Something about the process soothed her, allowed her to release the darkness inside of her. She knew she couldn't rely on self-injury. If Rose were here, she might threaten to strangle Lissa if she wasn't directly in charge of her well-being and safety. She hadn't turned to cutting in a very long time and was disappointed in herself. That kind of thinking wouldn't help her deal but she couldn't help it.
She mustered up as much of a smile as she possibly could. She knew she had been bitchy and sounded crazy in the midst of chaos but she was trying really hard to be nice now and it wasn't without some effort on her part. It had nothing to do with Caleb though and everything to do with her deteriorating mental health.
"Thank you. If you ever need me, you know where to find me." She smiled at him slightly before getting out of the car and walking inside. She went straight for the fridge, grabbed a bloodbag and disappeared into her bedroom.
