Lissa knew that a public bathroom in the ER of the only hospital in town probably wasn't the best place to hide. She wasn't hiding exactly but she really hadn't wanted anyone to see what she was doing. This was mild of course, the pressure of the scalpel on her thumb nothing compared to the way she would slice long scratches into her skin. If Rose were here she would have a heart attack. She wasn't there to absorb the darkness or to punch it away. Lissa had grown accustomed to life without Rose but that didn't mean it didn't suck sometimes.
She had thought there was a possibility she might be caught by another woman. This was after all the ladies restroom but instead she found a man standing near. If she had been in a clearer frame of mind she would have recognized Caleb from the network but her mind was muddled with Spirit and she didn't recognize him at all. Instead she cringed away from him when he asked if she was okay. She was ashamed, mostly. She hadn't wanted to be caught and trying to explain what was happening to a total stranger was impossible.
"This is the ladies room," she said after a few minutes.
She had to gather herself and even then her voice was tenuous and shaky. She realized her natural inclination for influence had dissolved in the moment. Caleb should be halfway to Tahiti by now in search of the mens room but he wasn't moving and that look of concern in his dark eyes reminded her of Rose a bit. It only made her heart break and she had to turn away and stop looking at him for a moment. She looked down at the scalpel in her hand and pressed her bleeding thumb hard into her pointer finger to try and staunch the blood flow. It was a minor wound but clearly self inflicted and she really didn't want to get admitted to psych.
"I'm fine," she insisted. She was still gripping the scalpel because she wasn't sure how to get rid of it. She spotted a trash can and quickly walked towards it, hiding behind a cascade of silvery blonde waves. She didn't look at Caleb, just tossed the scalpel into the trash before washing her hands. He could plainly see the blood swirling around the drain but she no longer cared. It wasn't any of his business.
"Are you okay?" she asked after she looked into the mirror and gathered herself. She stared at his reflection for a long moment. "There's a lot of hurt people out there. I was trying to help...." Discussing Spirit with the other vampires here was hard enough since they were so different but at least they could wrap their minds around what she was. She didn't know Caleb at all or what he was or if he was just simply human. She didn't spot any scratches or bite wounds on him though. So what was he doing here?
"Is your friend hurt?" She recalled that he had supposedly been following a friend into the bathroom. Lissa barely had enough energy to keep standing let alone for another healing but she was going to push herself to try if he needed help anyway.
