Cadfael walked down into the basement of his home and felt a calm self-possession fall over him. He’d been feeling antsy and unsettled since the full moon and completely unable to write or otherwise do his job. He had enough money to tide him over even the worst writer’s block but he didn’t like the agitated way he felt. He knew it wasn’t the writer’s block causing the agitation but instead the agitation causing the writer’s block. It was just as well he knew ways of dealing with this.
Experimentation.
Conducting experiments had always been a good way of calming himself down and centring himself in his head again. He’d decided to investigate something that he’d always meant to but had never quite had the time. It had involved a bit of preparation but these things always did and he was a patient man when he was conducting an experiment. He would not risk the results with unnecessary haste.
He looked around the basement with satisfaction. Everything was ready and was only waiting for him to finish the final preparations. He pulled out his wand and did just that, warding the room so that no one but him could get in and so that no sound whatsoever could get out. Once that was done, he stripped off his clothes and walked over to the table in the centre of the room. This experiment was likely to get messy and he didn’t want to ruin his clothes.
He stopped at one side of the table and looked down at the young woman who was bound both physically and magically to the surface. He’d silenced her magically as well though he would remove that shortly. She was nude and he’d shaved her entire body to give him the best possible canvas for his work.
"Good afternoon," he said in a calm, detached voice… his experimental voice as he liked to call it. "In a moment I shall remove the spell keeping you silent and begin my experiment. Please do not hesitate to let me know how you feel. It is important for my observations and to ensure I get accurate results."
With that he gave a flick of his wand to remove the silencing spell and turned to put the wand down on the small trolley that was sitting nearby. The moment the spell was removed, the young woman burst out with a litany of curses, swearwords and threats. Cadfael noted them absently but otherwise ignored them as he picked up a long slender needle. It was easily the length of his hand though barely more than a millimetre wide and was one of many on the polished steel tray on the trolley.
He turned back to the girl and watched her eyes widened when she saw what was in his hands.. She tried to struggle against her bonds but he’d made sure that she could barely move… except for her mouth. He placed the tip of the needle against her thigh and pushed it into the muscle until it was embedded deep within, not a sign of it above the skin. The girl went very still as he did this then suddenly started struggling again, vitriolic words spewing out of her mouth that were tinged with an edge of pain and fear.
He turned back to the trolley and made a small notation in the journal there then picked up another needle. This needle was neatly inserted into the other thigh to be greeted with another litany of swearing tinged with fear and Cadfael made another notation about her reaction.
He continued with this pattern – insert a needle, monitor her reaction, make a note – as he slowly inserted needles into her limbs and then into her torso. He knew the needles were fine enough that the internal wounds would not kill her unless he removed the needles. They would be bleeding of course but a slow barely there bleed that would leave her alive and well for some time yet. It seemed that there was some part of her that recognised this as well as she had been reduced to harsh sobs and broken, almost unintelligible sounds that might well be words.
He turned back to the trolley and picked up his wand. He walked around the table until he was behind her head and then he ran a hand over the smooth, newly shaven skin covering her skull. He considered the surface for a moment then placed the tip of his wand on a point on her skull about equidistant between the crown and her right ear. He whispered a spell and a tiny hole was bored through the bone. He set his wand aside and picked up another of those long, fine needles then gently inserted it through the hole and into her brain.
The girl’s hand twitched and he noted that reaction with interest. He’d never really had much opportunity to experiment on the brain and he felt that today would prove to be educational. He picked up his wand again and bored another hole in the opposite of the girl’s skull from his first effort and inserted another needle. He recorded her reaction then began a slow methodical exploration of the girl’s brain.
He finally stopped when the girl’s eyes had glazed over and a thin line of drool was seeping out of the corner of her mouth. Her face had the slackness common to those who had suffered a stroke and he knew he would get no more of value from her. Still it had been a satisfactory first experiment and he had gained some valuable data that he could now take away and examine closely. He would do a little more research and then consider a second experiment.
He stepped around to the side of the table and began to slowly retrieve all of the needles he had embedded in the girl’s body and brain. They went into a small stainless steel container to be cleaned and sterilised for their next use. He transfigured the girl into a large bone and placed that into another container while he cleaned up the room and himself and dressed again.
He then wrapped the bone in a large piece of paper and headed out. He apparated to a small Muggle village he’d earmarked earlier on and worked his way around to a large fenced off warehouse. There was a dog that was permitted to roam free in the yard and Cadfael tossed the bone over the chain link fence into the yard. The dog was on the unexpected treat in a moment and Cadfael was with cool amusement as the dog went to work on the bone. With that last item taken care of in such an amusing way, he turned his back and apparated home. He had some research to do… and perhaps some writing as well.
