RP: A wolfy conversation
Who: Dale Smith & Tristan Moore
Where: Tris's house
When: August 27th, 2024
Rating/Warnings: None
Summary: Dale keeps his word and goes to meet Tristan.
Status: Complete | Private

Dale had left work on time, determined not to be late for his... Appointment? Meeting? with Tristan. He had thought about it a lot in the past couple of days and he had a million questions flitting around in his mind, not sure what he wanted to ask Tristan first.

He was glad he had told Ben about things. He was his best friend and it was something that he didn't want to keep from him, no matter how anti-werewolf the magical community was. He also knew in hindsight that he should have realised that Ben would be pro-him. His friend had always been there for him and this was just something else that they could and would deal with. He would just have to keep an eye on him; he had a feeling Ben would be more affected than he let on and Dale refused to let him feel bad on his part.

His conversation with Patrick from the night before had confused him too. He hadn't spoken to the man in years and he had told him about his condition without a moment's thought. Dale couldn't figure out why he had been so open about it and decided to blame stress and alcohol. It was easier.

He had decided to not charm his marks for this meeting and had let his hair go back to its normal length. The collar of his shirt covered them somewhat but they were still visible if one was inclined to look. Ringing the doorbell at Tristan's, Dale stepped back and waited for somebody to open the door.

"I got it I got it!" Tristan called as the bell went off.

"I don't ... really see anyone racing you for it," Isaac quipped from the front room where he was comfortably settled with a book and a cup of tea.

While he was moderately curious about this, he wasn't terribly fussed. It wasn't as though there was anything in the house that specifically sang out they were a secret group. It was just a house where an odd collection of people happened to be living.

It happened.

"Because I called it," Tristan pointed out with a laugh as he drew the door open. "Hello," he said to the bloke on the other side. "I'm Tristan, won't you come in?" he continued with a grand, sweeping gesture of one arm.

Dale vaguely remembered the man's face from school and he smiled when he gestured to the inside of the house... Maybe this wasn't so bad and maybe he'd get the answers he needed. He had to hope so because he didn't know how else he'd find out what he wanted or needed to know.

"Hi, I would be Dale," he said, smiling as he entered the house. "Thanks for sending me an owl, I really think I need to talk to somebody like... Me. I've told a couple of people I know but it's different. They don't get it and they can't help me."

Tristan nodded as he started down the hall, then paused and turned. "Would you like anything to eat or drink?" He inquired politely in some vain attempt to pretend he had manners and could be a good host.

"And would you be more comfortable talking in my room, the den, or outside? Your call," he assured the other wolf.

"A drink would be nice," he said as he followed Tristan down the hall. He was hungry actually, having just finished work, but he didn't want to be presumptuous and he could eat when he got home. He smiled and tilted his head. "Spending half of the day telling sixteen year old girls you're not interested is thirsty work."

Dale thought about it before shaking his head. "Honestly? I'm comfortable just about anywhere. A handy Hufflepuff trait," he joked. "Whichever's quietest, I suppose. Do you live here with many other people?" he asked, thinking that the house looked a little too big for just Tristan or even Tristan and Healer Summer.

"This is my best mate's grandfather's house. Ace is sort of his adopted daughter." He paused. "The grandfather's," he added in case clarification was needed. "So, it's me, Ace, Lan, Isaac, and at least for now, Ace's lover, Mitch."

It was a shame she wasn't here at the moment to tease.

"And we have tea, milk, water, some form of juice, a questionable looking substance that may be an experimental potion," Tris reported as he peered into the icebox.

"What's your fancy?"

"So there's five of you living here?" Dale wondered if the house Ben had bought was as big. He imagined it was rather large if it was so dilapidated and had big gardens. "How do you all know each other? Through school or work?" he asked, curious.

"An experimental potion?" The words reminded him of Patrick's job title but he dismissed it. He had felt the niggling at the back of his mind last time when Patrick had said 'he' and not 'they' but he decided not to push with it. "I think I'll steer clear of that.

"Tea would be great," he said, smiling as he leaned against one of the kitchen counters, watching Tristan. "Nothing tea can't cure, right? Except for lycanthropy it seems."

He kind of thought he'd covered that, but he supposed there was room for speculation.

"Isaac owns the house. Ace's father was his best mate at school, and he adopted her when her parents died in the first war. Lan's Isaac's grandson and my best mate. So I invited myself to move in. I'm not completely sure how Mitch and Ace met. Maybe when he was turned, she was his healer."

He nodded. "Ace has a hobby of playing with potions. Mostly she just makes these vile concoctions and shoves them in the icebox." He paused. "No, wait. That's me. I do that."

Grinning, he started on the tea, aware of the elves preparing a tray with biscuits and scones for them. "We can go sit on the back porch. Pretty quiet out there and smells better than my room."

Dale listened to the explanation, interested to hear there was another werewolf in the house. He wondered if it was normal for werewolves to congregate together. He supposed it made finding room-mates easier. "So Mitch is a werewolf like us?" he asked. "I- Unless people were hiding it from me, I've never met a werewolf. It's a bit surreal to know of two in three days," he confided, feeling a bit out of his depth. He didn't know much of anything

"Ah," Something still felt off but he ignored it. He was probably just being over-suspicious. "You brew Potions? That's pretty awesome. I was always terrible at them," he said. "Didn't have the concentration for it. I was too busy making the class laugh at my jokes," he added with a chuckle.

"Sounds fine, the weather's remarkably un-British today," he said, putting his hands in his jeans pockets as he watched Tristan. "I don't have any outside space where I'm living at the moment. My friend has found a house though and we might be moving there once we've tidied it up a bit. I haven't seen it yet but apparently its gardens are large enough to hide a werewolf once a month which is cool. What do you do on the full moon? Stay inside or go outside?"

"You've probably met at least one other," Tris offered. "Prejudices keep most of them quiet about what they are, and for twenty-six days of every twenty-eight, we're perfectly normal and don't really show any differences." He shrugged and grinned. "But yeah, Mitch is a victim of the lunar flu."

Carrying the tray outside, Tris set it down on the porch. "Sadly, yes, I brew potions. I'm visiting Professor Withors once a week during the school year to work on the Wolfsbane, so I can eventually brew my own."

Picking up one of the biscuits, he broke it in half. "I run out there," he said with a gesture to the woods. "When I was at school, they let me romp around the Forbidden Forest. It's fun," he admitted. "Having your own mind but a wolf's body. If only it came without built in societal prejudices."

"Probably," He tried to think if he'd noticed anybody disappearing for two days during school but he didn't think he had. "I never really knew about werewolves beyond dressing up at Halloween when I was younger. They're nothing more than mythical creatures in the Muggle world."

Dale followed Tristan outside and sat on the porch next to him, taking a cup of tea from it and a biscuit to nibble on. It would probably appease his stomach for a while and stop it from rumbling. "Potions is the one thing I thought I could do but no such luck. I should have known really, I could never cook Muggle-style and it's kind of the same principle."

He looked out over the woods, thinking that it would be quite neat to be able to run around at leisure. "Does it hurt?" he asked. "The changing. I'm not a wimp when it comes to pain but I can't imagine it not being agony. I also think you're the only person I've spoken to so far who has referred to it as fun."

"You find a silver lining in it," he said quietly. "Or you go crazy." He cocked his head slightly. "This is all I've ever known. This life. I won't kid you - it's worse for people being turned, I'm sure. They go from perfectly normal to outcast, all because of bad luck."

He sighed. "It hurts like a bitch, but at least its quick and the wolf can ignore the pain. Back to human is a little harder; the human bodies aren't as equipped to cope with the pain. There are potions for it. If you ask her nice, Ace can probably help you out there."

He gazed out across the yard for a moment. "I wasn't kidding about the crazy. It's hard on the mind, and ... the best you can do is find someone to talk to when things get dark. Someone who gets you, or gets this."

"I got warned about that," he said, sipping at his tea. It was still slightly too hot and he blew on it to cool it down. "My friends seem all right so far although I don't know if they're just pretending for my benefit. I told my best friend last night and he was supportive but I didn't expect any different. Ben's always been the same."

He remembered the potion the Healer had given him. "She gave me a potion. She said it might help," He thought of Patrick and how he said he'd help. "There's somebody else I can firecall if I need to. We're not exactly friends but he offered to help."

Dale frowned; he hadn't thought about the mental effects. He had been trying to avoid them thus far. "What do you do? Talk to Mitch?"

Tristan laughed aloud at that; he couldn't help it. Then he reminded himself Dale had no way of knowing their relationships. "Nah. Mitch is the guy I tease when I walk by the room and he and Ace are busy. Landon's my rock. My light, I guess. He keeps me from drowning in my own darkness."

Tris shrugged. "He's the one that brought me out to begin with. My mom had it in my head that ... She meant well. She didn't want me hurting people, but she had me absolutely terrified of myself by the time I started school."

He kept his eyes on the distant trees as he spoke. "Lan was brave enough to befriend me, and patient enough to deal with me."

He licked his lips. "It wasn't easy, and it never gets easier. It's a constant thing, the dark place. He keeps me from going in so far I can't get back out again."

"Ah," he said, not sure how to reply. Whilst Ben was his best friend and had been for quite a while, Dale had never really been terribly introspective. He was an extrovert, relied on the approval of others and loved to entertain, shock, flirt and have fun. He always had been the same. "I'll have to see how it is for me. I've never really been in my own head much if that makes any sense. I try to get into other people's heads."

He thought of Ben and if he could deal with that and hoped that he could. He knew that if push came to shove he wasn't too proud to not send a message to Patrick. He had said that he understood and he'd managed to stop him from thinking about it the other night. They weren't friends though. That was the odd thing.

"I can think of a few people," he said, hoping he was right. "Have you ever hurt anybody? Or come close to?"

Tris chuckled."Long as you stay out of mine, we're good."

He'd had quite enough of people trying to get into his head lately.

"Once," he said in response to the question. "Something was off with the potion I'd taken, and I wasn't enough me to keep the wolf under control. Nothing happened; my mom caught on quick enough. Pinned me down, dragged me inside and kept me there."

Tris turned his eyes to Dale. "Nothing happened then, but something could have."

"I don't mean to get inside people's heads, I just do. I like to entertain people and that means knowing what makes them laugh and what doesn't," Dale explained.

"That's what I'm scared of mostly. Hurting somebody. Doing to them what somebody did to me- I keep thinking if the person remembered, if they felt remorse, if they will do anything differently. It plays in my head almost constantly," he admitted. "I'm staying at St Mungo's until I can trust myself and until I'm used to what happens. I don't like the idea of being scared and alone."

"I've heard that wolves not on the potion won't remember what they did as a wolf," Tristan offered.

Heard, had in-depth discussions about. Whichever. Sometimes it still amazed him how easily the lies and half-truths fell from his lips.

But that was a hazard with running with a secret organization - only so much information could be parceled out, and some had to stay vague. 'I heard' rather than 'the stray we rescued told us all about it.'

"I think I did the hospital thing when I was little," he said. "Not since school though."

"That doesn't make me feel any better knowing that they might do it again," Dale admitted. "Why isn't the potion free in all countries? I know that it's expensive but surely for the governments it's worth making sure all werewolves are kept safe and kept from hurting others?"

He knew he was being idealistic and foolish but he didn't see how they could justify making a potion that helped and then not giving it to those in need.

"So you used the grounds at Hogwarts from when you got there. Did you take the potion when you were younger?" he asked. "From a baby, I mean? God, it must be so different for you. I'd say I don't know how you did it but like you said, you've never known anything different."

He frowned, thinking. "What happened to your mother- Uh, if you don't mind me asking, that is. Did she get turned too?"

"Not all wolves want the potion," Tris said. "I'm sure you've heard the ..."

He trailed off and frowned. "Well, maybe not, if you're Muggleborn. Fenrir Greyback ring any bells for you? He's ... parents tell stories about him to get their kids to behave. Like Muggles have a boogeyman? We have him. Or had. He might be dead now. But there are others, like this Drakkor bloke."

He grinned. "If I ever get rich enough to afford it, I'll hand out Wolfsbane on street corners."

Shaking his head, he thought for a moment. "Not since infancy, no. My first shift ... I was eight. So we started it then. And yes, my mum was turned, but fortunately my baby brother turned out clean. No fur for him."

"I've heard his name mentioned at school but not in anything more than vague terms. He was around when Voldemort was, wasn't he?" he asked. More than ten years had passed after his death before Dale had found out he was a wizard. "I take it he didn't want the potion?" Drakkor rang a bell and he remembered the newspapers. "He doesn't seem like the nicest bloke in the world."

Dale frowned, some of the things not making sense to him. He supposed it was because he knew so little about the disease and how it worked. He was still a baby in comparison to somebody like Tristan. "How come you didn't shift till you were eight? Were you too young?" he asked. "Well that's a relief for your brother... I didn't realise that werewolves could still have children. It's kind of reassuring- I mean I'm gay so it's not something I'm going to have to deal with but for others? Yeah, reassuring."

Tristan nodded. "Worked ... for Voldemort, so the stories go. Or tied his pack to him, something like that. But he ..." Tris shook his head. "Fenrir liked kids. Liked to make sure he was close to some when he shifted, so he could turn them. Was his goal to turn as many as he could, and turn them young."

Exhaling softly, Tristan shrugged. "Same reason magic doesn't manifest until wizards are that age, I suppose. Just ... one of those things triggered by time or some development or something. And usually they can't reproduce. The shifting usually causes miscarriages, and we're ... really not sure why my mum got as lucky as she did to have another kid. Sage was born prematurely, and he had some problems from that but ... he grew up into an okay kid. I'm just glad he ... was around to grow up at all. And that he wasn't tweaked like we were."

His eyes flicked toward the window, and he grinned and nodded before lifting his hand in a wave and swinging his attention back to Dale. "Lan's got patrol tonight," he shared. "He was letting me know he was leaving."

"That's... That's really wrong," he said once he'd processed it. It seemed unimaginable that people would do such a thing, hurt people on purpose. Dale thought you'd have to be sick in the head and then some to justify it. "Is this Drakkor the same? Or does he just like practising his ABCs with human limbs?"

Dale thought it was kind of fascinating but then at the same time understandable. Transforming at too young an age would risk killing a child or so he assumed. "That's shitty- That women can't have children. Are you still close to your family?"

He looked up at the window when he saw movement, watching as Tristan responded. "Patrol? What does he do?" He assumed Auror or Hitwizard but he didn't want to be too presumptuous. "What do you do for a living? I never asked."

Tris tried to recall what all had been actually published, and what had just been speculation. "Dunno about that. I ... there've been a couple articles about him. 'parently he likes to murder even when he's not shifted. The ... the name thing I think is recent."

He grinned, and nodded. "Still close to them, yeah, but my mum's a bit over protective so I had to get out of there 'fore she drove me batty. I don't see Sage as often as I'd like to, but ... he's busy. Going into his last year of school," Tris shared with a slight grin.

"Lan's in his second year of Auror training. And I am wasting my life away as an employee at Weasley's Wheezes." He laughed and shrugged. "I could've ... done other things I'm sure, but I'd just as soon not sign up for Auror training then have them tell me to sod off because I go furry once a month." A faint smirk edged his lips. "Our employment options sometimes get a bit ... limited," he pointed out. "You think they'd let us play to our strengths and just make sure we're off those two nights, but ... no. We're dirty and unclean and awful, awful creatures."

"That's really wrong," he said, shivering a little. It seemed so unfair and unjust that somebody was allowed to roam around and do those type of things. "So has he been causing trouble for quite a while or has it been a new thing? I have to admit that I haven't really paid much attention to articles about werewolves."

Dale laughed, imagining the family environment only too well. "Yeah, parents can do that. I couldn't wait to leave even though I'm very close to them."

He smiled and nodded. "I can understand that, I'm sure I should have tried to actually have a career or something," He brushed his hand through his hair. "So Weasley's Wheezes? That's not far from I work, really," He grinned. "Dirty and unclean and awful? I might be dirty but not in the way I think they mean."

"Dunno how long," Tris admitted with a shrug. "Just know what I've read in the papers."

And of course, as far as the world knew, Drakkor and Sterling were two different people ... so he couldn't even cite Sterling's prior activities that had made the paper - though there'd been no surviving witnesses to those to describe him; they'd all learned through Mitch.

Tris grinned a little. "Think we're all a little dirty in that way," he pointed out.

"Ah," he said, frowning. "Do you think he's taken his inspiration from Fenrir Greyback's old attacks? It seems really wrong to me that somebody would want to hurt another human being. I mean I don't like my sister's husband but not to the point where I'd turn him into a werewolf."

Dale smiled brighter. "Let's hope so. Life would be boring as hell if we weren't a little dirty now and then," he said.

Finishing his tea, he looked out at the woods. "I know it sounds stupid but do wolves tend to form a pack? Or are they more solitary creatures because they're not 'true' wolves?"

"Some people are just .. crazy," Tris pointed out. "I mean, even Muggles have serial killers and the like. Pretty sure there've been cases of cannibalism there, too. Like, the eat your face 'cause it's funny sort."

He shrugged his shoulders before he exhaled. "Not ... necessarily. I mean, I like to hang around Lan. Not that he's a wolf, but ..." he grinned and shrugged. "Who doesn't like having their security blanket around?"

Laughing softly, he shook his head. "For a real answer ... it depends on the wolf. Some are lone wolves. Some like to gather wolves to them and make them into a pack. Some just like to run with other wolves on the full, but not be bothered with them otherwise. Some like the security of a pack."

"Well if it's all the same I'd rather avoid him like the plague," Dale said with a laugh before growing more serious. "I have no desire to hurt anybody. Ever."

Dale thought about it. Ben had always been there for him but he didn't want him anywhere close when he turned. He wasn't all that sure that he wanted him there afterwards; he loved his friend but he didn't want Ben to see him hurt and worry unduly. Not then there was nothing he could do to change what was happening to him.

"So you just find out when you change?" he suggested, smiling. "That kind of makes sense. It'll be interesting to see considering how social I am in human form."

Tris almost invited him to run on the full before recalling he'd be out patrolling or hunting if they'd lucked out and found Sterling by then. While he thought it would be nice, occasionally, to just run for the sake of running like he had at school. But times changed, and he changed with them.

"Good," he said quietly. "Makes you the favored kind of wolf," he teased with a wink when Dale admitted to not wanting to hurt anyone.

Nodding to the question, he grinned. "More or less, yeah. And you could always put up 'pack-mate wanted' signs around Diagon to find someone to run with on fulls." And he was only half-teasing about that. "Just ... you know. Be careful about who answers," he added with a laugh.

Dale smiled, amused. "My friend and I were talking about that for our new house mates if we get the house he found. Budding rockstar and wolf boy seek people to live with," he said, remembering the conversation with Ben and chuckling. "I was and am quite sure that we'll only attract hags and vampires."

He looked at his watch and realised that he had been out for longer than he had intended to. "I should go. I've got an early start tomorrow, restocking and whatnot. The owner wants me there by six so we're all done by the time the students file in wanting their books."

Rock star reminded him a little of Danny, and he wondered if that was the case. Or if it was a completely different band. He grinned lightly. "Well hey, as long as they pay the rent, right?" He shrugged and laughed quietly before he nodded to the statement about time.

"Sure, and if you ever need an ear or a bit of advice ... owls will find me. Maybe when you're ready to break out of the hospital, I can show you a couple of good, safe places to run around, if you turn out to be the outdoorsy type."

He stood up and summoned one of the elves to clear away the remaining tea stuff before he held out a hand to Dale. "Good to meet you, and ... seriously, the offer to help, any time, stands."

"And try not to kill me in my sleep," He grinned at the other man. "That would be a bonus. I think we're going to have a harder time finding somebody who doesn't mind a werewolf than anything. I mean how many people have an irrational fear of guitars and singing?"

He nodded, getting to his feet and shaking Tristan's hand. "You've been really helpful and thanks- Again, I mean. For meeting me," he clarified. "I'll see you soon, yeah?"

"Yeah, that too, but we're pretty tough. Asleep or otherwise." He winked, but that was a bit of a fib. Sure, they were tough and resistant to magic, but they weren't invulnerable.

Especially to silver.

"I have a perfectly rational fear of singing," Tris teased, "especially off-key singing."
