RP: Callum/Charlie
Who: Callum, Charlie
Where: The reserve
When: 6 December, 2025
Summary: Callum wants to discuss marriage and spells

Callum had gone to his tent after a long day in the cold and snow. It was fucking freezing, and it was making Hogwarts look like a trip to the Bahamas. He didn't like it one bit. He liked it even less than he had to go back to his tent and spend the night alone. At least at Hogwarts, they could spend the night together.

Cold, wet, tired and angry, he sat at his table and opened his paper. He went through it until he got to the new marriage laws. He couldn't believe these people: gay marriages and divorces. How fucking insane! Even if he was going to benefit from these law, he still thought that they were insane. Putting his cloak back, he rolled the paper and hid it in an inside pocket, before stepping out and crossing the camp. He called out for Charlie, before going inside. "Hi," he said, making sure that there was no one before going to Charlie and putting his arms around him, not caring that he was still wet and cold from outside. "God, your birthday can't come soon enough."

It was better being back at the reserve full time, actually getting to spend his entire day there instead of only getting to spend a few hour overseeing things the way he had been. It was freezing which was really the only downside, he might night have liked working at a desk, but at least they had climate control. Still at the end of the day he could come back and change and get warm again and it wasn't anything he hadn't dealt with before.

He was just pulling a clean shirt over his head when Callum came into his tent and he grinned - this was the one thing he wanted to change about the reserve. Hogwarts was made all the more bearable because he had Callum there beside him at the end of each day - here they both went back to their own separate tents and slept alone. It would change of course, but there was still time to wait.

"Hi." He breathed a bit easier when Callum wrapped his arms around him, "Gods you're freezing," He huffed out a laugh at the stark contrast in temperature between the two of them, but didn't pull out of the embrace. "Less than a week left." He reminded Callum, just six more days and they could announce it to the family and then here at the reserve. Not that Charlie was counting down the days or anything.

He was freezing, but this felt better already, and he moved even closer and kissed Charlie's neck. "It's bloody cold outside. Snow, snow and more snow. This is going to b a very cold winter."

Callum raised his head and stared at Charlie. "Less than a week and then we can tell people here. God, I can't believe I actually want to do this." Things had changed so much. Only a few months he would have called people crazy if they said that he would come out and be engaged to a man.

He stepped back and pulled out the paper. "Did you see this? Your family just passed marriage decrees and we can get married." He nodded toward the Prophet. "Take a look."

Even Callum's lips were cold when he pressed them against his neck, but Charlie was sure he'd live. "I'm starting to think all those dementors had some kind of lasting effect on the weather." He said shaking his head.

He chuckled, it was still hard for him to believe himself, and he wasn't the one having to come to terms with the idea of men marrying men the way Callum was. But despite how strange it all was, Charlie felt certain this was what he wanted, no matter how crazy it was. "Not getting cold feet are you?" He teased.

Shaking his head when Callum brandished the paper at him, Charlie took it. "I haven't had a chance yet - unlike some people I choose to get out of my freezing clothes before I start reading the paper." He smirked, "Go sit over there," Charlie pointed the paper toward the little stove. "And I'll read this." And just as Callum had said they had gotten the laws changed and they could get married, it all seemed to happen much more quickly than he thought it would, but he couldn't help but be glad. "There's a bit of good news then, is there a certain length that is proper for an engagement that I don't know about?"

"We're very far from the Dementor and this is a lot colder than it was in Scotland in the fall," he said, laughing. "We're snowed in, that should clue you in."

Callum shook his head. "I think it's insane and I can't believe that they made laws allowing it, but I'm not getting cold feet. Ask me the day before the wedding and you might get a different answer," he said, chuckling.

"What's the point of that? I would have gotten wet coming here again, and I will get wet and frozen once more when I return to my tent. I don't see the point of getting so many clothes dirty. No house elves here, unless you are offering to do the laundry for me." Even as he complained, he went to sit where Charlie said, and he even cast a few drying charms.

He stopped with his wand mid air. "Of course there is a proper length: six months to a year, depending on circumstances. Why? How long were you thinking of?"

"I am aware of our current location, and the time of year, and even the sort of precipitation we're dealing with out there." Charlie answered Callum with a smirk.

He chuckled. "I'll ask you and see what sort of answer I get then." Though after doing all of this Charlie had a good feeling Callum wasn't going to be getting cold feet.

"We could always get a house elf." Charlie shook his head while Callum complained about the weather and his wet clothes and the laundry. It would only be a week before neither one of them had to deal with going back out into the cold. "You can still be warm and dry while you're here, even if you are going to force yourself to go back out and freeze your arse off before the night is over."

Of course there was a proper length, Charlie wasn't even sure why he bothered asking anymore. "Just curious, I don't think I've ever really known anyone who did all of this the proper way." And he might not have minded getting married sooner rather than later.

"You're so observant. I guess a year in a castle and a few weeks at the Ministry gave you a more intellectual approach to the weather," he answered, grinning.

Callum shook his head. "You won't be able to do that, because the spouses can't see each other the night before the wedding. It's tradition, don't you know?"

He snorted. "Where exactly would we get the money for one? It might have escaped your notice, but I came back with about 12 sickles in my pocket, and I don't have an inheritance." He smiled. "I am warm and dry now, so stop worrying."

Callum nodded toward the other chair. "Sit down, and lets talk about it. We've been doing this the proper way because it's what I want, but you haven't said what you want. Maybe it's time that we discuss it."

"It's skill I've developed over the years." Charlie nodded sagely when Callum commented on his observations.

"How about during the day before the night before the wedding?" He suggested. "Or is the whole day off limits? I suppose I could get someone to give the message to you if that's the case, but then I'd lose out on seeing your face and that'd be a shame."

Shrugging, Charlie laughed. "I'm sure if you explain that you have something against laundry someone will be more than happy to gift us with an elf." Not that Charlie actually had any desire for a house elf. It was convenient at the castle, but he'd survived his entire life without one he doubted he needed one now.

Charlie sat down, paper folded in his hand at Callum's nod. "I want to marry you, and I'd like my family to be there - but other than that I don't actually have any ideas." Which Charlie suspected was a large part of why he didn't mind doing things the way Callum seemed to want them. This was important to him and if these things were important to Callum then Charlie could make sure they did them right.

"Yes, and it's shocking that you survived to get to your fifties. I'm glad that you do pay more attention to the dragons." He leaned over and kissed Charlie, humming as he did so.

"No, the whole day isn't off limits. Don't they teach you anything any more? What kind of pureblood are you?" he asked, chuckling. "Although I was told that there are some old traditions that go on for a whole week, but even I am not that traditional."

Callum snorted. "It'll be more effective to tell people when they ask about wedding presents. Someone is bound to give us one."

He tilted his head. "Nothing at all" No preference on how long we wait or what spell you want to use? We have to pick one of those. Or where we have it? Best men? Wedding party? Rehearsal dinner? You don't care about any of it?"

"I'm sure it was not without a great deal of luck." Charlie said with a laugh. "Never did have a problem paying attention to the dragons." The kiss was nice - Charlie was definitely missing those during these long nights on his own.

"A very poor one by the looks of it." He shook his head, and he was certainly carrying on a long family tradition of not doing things the way most purebloods did. "Yes, I'm not sure I could stand a whole week."

He laughed, he couldn't imagine getting a house elf for a gift, the whole idea was just so strange to him.

"Okay, so maybe I have a few more opinions than just those." Charlie decided when Callum started listing off things that Charlie really ought to have some kind of preference about. Though the where was less important than some of them, and a Rehearsal dinner, well he wasn't really sure how he felt about that. "I care about all of that, I just haven't really spent much time thinking about all of it yet, I've just been focusing on not telling people the news for the most part - not that he'd been completely successful in that endeavor though.

"Good thing, too, since they like to grill those who don't," he answered, while his hands ran over Charlie's thighs. He'd always be one to touch people, whether his son or the other keepers (in a totally manly way, of course), but he missed touching Charlie like this, missed this sense of familiarity that h' never really had before.

"Well, Bill said that he waited a whole year, so someone in your family knows something, unless it was his wife who told him." Knowing this family, it was not unlikely.

"Okay, so you have some opinions, that's good and you care about all of that, although I highly doubt that," he said, chuckling. "Do you want to talk about it? Or would you rather think things over before we talk? It's really up to you."

"Though I did get a fair few scars those first couple of years." Charlie laughed. Callum was right though, his birthday could not come soon enough, Charlie missed this, just the being close with Callum at the end of the day, when they talked out plans for the following day and then were just together.

"I think that might have had something do to with Fleur." Charlie didn't know for certain, things had been hectic then and there could have been other circumstances that lead to a longer engagement, but he didn't know for certain. "And mum wasn't exactly the biggest supporter of their marriage, so that could have drawn things out a bit as well."

Charlie shrugged. "I don't think it would hurt anything to talk about some of it now - unless you're in a hurry to get back to your tent." Charlie wasn't above a long conversation just to give him more time with Callum before they needed to go their separate ways for the night. "I think it'd help to talk some of it over with you, I don't know all of your opinions on all of this either - and we'll need to start planning at some point." Might as well be tonight.

"Idiot," he said, good naturedly. "Leave it to you to not pay attention around fire." Not that he believed it for a moment. Charlie might play games, but he always paid attention to the dragons.

Callum chuckled. "If she had idea about what's proper, she would have waited the year, even if your mother had welcomed her with open arms. It's just the way things are." Or were, since no one else seemed to care. Marriages were arranged in days, divorces even quicker. It was just wrong.

He stood up and pulled Charlie up by his arm. "All right, since I'm not getting your bed dirty and I refuse to be uncomfortable--" He took his wand out and transfigured the two chairs into a very spacious couch. "This is better," he said, sitting back down and pulling Charlie with him. Callum slid close to his lover and leaned against Charlie. "All right, let's start with the first thing. How long do you want to wait? Do you have a preference? Any special date you want?"

Charlie just grinned. "What can I say?" He loved that things were so easy with Callum - that he could joke and tease with him and he didn't have to think about what he was doing. It really was the way he preferred to end his days.

"Knowing Fleur she probably did." Fleur had always been more proper than the rest of the family - and yet for some reason she loved Bill despite that. And now here was Charlie with Callum - and he had no idea what he was doing apart from the fact that he loved Callum and he wanted to be with him. Maybe his brother hadn't been as crazy as Charlie always thought him to be.

"You know I don't have any issue with laundry." Charlie remarked when Callum told him he wasn't going to be making his bed dirty - but then it'd probably only make things more difficult when they had to separate, so the couch Callum transfigured from the chairs was probably the better solution. "Yes it is." Charlie agreed, letting Callum continue to pull him around and then put an arm around him when they were leaning against one another.

Charlie considered for a moment Callum's question - how long did he want to wait? Well part of him didn't want to wait at all - he'd made up his mind that he wanted to marry Callum and so he wanted to just do it. But he'd put this off for his entire life, convinced himself he would live out his life as a bachelor, and now here he was planning his own wedding. "I don't know how long it takes to plan a real wedding - but I can imagine it takes some time, and I want to do this right. So I'm thinking something like six months, maybe more." He shrugged, he really had no idea. "What are your thoughts on how long we should wait?"

"Nothing, because there's no defence to that," he said, chuckling.

"You sound surprised. What's going on in that head of yours? You know I'm teasing you about all of this, right? I understand that a few decades have passed by." Callum laced his fingers with Charlie's. "We'll do what's right for us."

He sniggered. "I'm not getting in bed or I'll never get out, and it's not--" He grinned. "Proper." Not that he gave a crap about beds and sheets, but he wouldn't enjoy getting up if he settled in for the night.

Callum chuckled at the way Charlie phrased things. "You don't want to wait, do you? I have no idea how long it takes nowadays. I suppose that it all depends where we want it. For something outside, we need to wait at least until May or June to make it bearable. If we find some place inside, then we don't have to. At least three months to get everyone used to it, and by that I mean Baron, mostly. So any time after March if we do it inside, later if we do it outside."

"I know you are." Charlie nodded. "I just never really thought about it before - I was in Romania when Bill and Fleur got married, so I missed all their planning and the fights with the family and all of it." He shrugged. "It's just strange to think about it now - and then think about going through all of this myself."

He snorted. "I'd hope that when I do finally manage to get you into bed again we won't have to be so proper."

Laughing Charlie raised his shoulders. "I do and I don't, it's hard to explain I guess. I mean part of me wants to just do this and move on with the rest of our lives. But I've put this off for so long, and it's going to be the only time I ever do this and so part of me wants to do it right - even if that means using up a bit of my very small amount of patience." Three months didn't sound so bad. "I think I'd like to do it outside though, which I suppose means longer than 3 months."

"I'm hoping that we can skip the fights," he said. "I really want both our families to be all right with this, and if we have to make compromises to keep everyone happy then it's fine, too. We'll work it out."

Just the idea of fucking again made his cock twitch. This birthday couldn't come too soon. "Don't complain. We could be doing this really properly and not fuck until the marriage. Wouldn't that be a bitch?"

Callum nodded. "I'd like it outside, too, even if we need to find where outside. I suppose that when we know that, we can decide between May and June. We'd have to check birthdays and such. There's way too many in your family and we don't want to step on anyone's toes. Okay, I don't, you might not care," he said, laughing.

He turned and stared at Charlie silently for a moment. "Speaking of doing it only once, which spell do you want to use?"

"I really doubt there is going to be any fights this time around. I think mum felt badly about how things went with Fleur, and you know maybe this is different than what anyone else has done, but I think they'll all just be a little too shocked that you're not a dragon to think about fighting." He smirked. "But if we need to make a few compromises along the way I think we'll manage."

Charlie groaned at the thought of going months without fucking Callum and yeah, he was never so glad that they weren't being that strict. "Have I mentioned that I am eternally grateful that you're not nearly that traditional?"

"There really aren't all that may of them, I promise." Charlie assured Callum with a laugh. Especially now, but Charlie wasn't thinking of that right then - he still had a large family who loved him and that was the important part. "I care about stepping on toes, though perhaps not in the same way you do."

Charlie raised an eyebrow though when Callum turned and stared at him wondering what was coming next, though the question wasn't nearly as bad as he imagined it to be. He shrugged. "I don't know I hadn't really thought about it, they both will let us get married so I don't suppose it matters either way, does it?" Unlike some previous spells that would only allow men and women to marry.

"What's wrong with your family?" he asked, laughing. "What's this fixation with you and dragons? They do understand that it's a job and not a kink, right? Should we provide information about kinks so they know the difference?"

Callum shook his head, grinning as he did so. "You have not, and I might just think that you don't appreciate it and insist on waiting the full six, seven months, whatever it will be."

He squeezed Charlie's hand. "I know you care, but as you said, your family doesn't seem to care about these things much. We really need to find a place to do it before we can decide. The McKinnon estate is pretty nice. We could ask her unless you're rather do it on the property of one of your relatives."

He couldn't imagine not thinking about that one. "It matters to me. I don't get this marriage with the option of divorce. It's like... you're getting married forever, or until you change your mind. That's not a marriage. A marriage is supposed to be forever, and there are rough moments but you work things out and stay together. You don't leave your husband or wife. It's just... it's wrong. Why bother getting married if you can change your mind later? If that's the case, then live with someone."

"Ever since the twins started in on that years ago it's just kind of stuck around, I've long since stopped trying to fight it." He laughed. "We are not giving them any information on kinks, they can deal with this on their own."

Charlie shook his head and kissed Callum, nipping at his lower lip before he pulled away. "Well I am eternally grateful that you're not that traditional, and I intend to demonstrate just how thankful I am on my birthday so you can get a better idea of why we're not waiting another six or seven months."

The McKinnon Estate was nice, Charlie had only been there once before but he remembered it easily enough and he shrugged. The Burrow would have been his first choice though it wasn't really an option now. There was Shell Cottage too. "How attached to the McKinnon place are you? In General." He asked.

Truthfully, he hadn't given the spell they would use much thought - they were getting married and really that was the only pertinent detail to Charlie. "So that means we'll use the spell without the divorce option then." Charlie had said he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Callum - and part of that was scary to think of, but divorce hadn't ever been something that he wanted.

"That doesn't make things better," he answered, shaking his head, but he was smiling. Al wasn't insane as Charlie's family, but he understood not arguing with your brothers. "This is your family, we're talking about. They showed up dressed like women at a dragon camp. I doubt they have a problem finding information about kinks."

Callum smiled as they kissed. "I look forward to this display of gratitude. You can prove it to me every night until the day before the wedding."

He shrugged. "Not at all. It's the only place that I could think of without asking strangers, which I don't really want to do, but if you have a better idea, then we'll go with it."

"You okay with that, though? This is the part where we talk about it, and you can say no. Do you understand that detail?" he teased with a smirk on his face. "Or about the other hundreds of things that need to be considered: like clothes, flowers." Not that he really cared about either one of those. "The ceremony." That he cared about. "The witnesses. I thought about Baron, but really that's not his job. He's my son and he's not supposed to be the best man, the friend; that's Al's job. Will you ask Bill? And can we skip the whole thing with the bridesmaids and flower girls unless you want to walk down the altar in a white dress. I'm not going to say no to you even if white really doesn't do much for your complexion," he said, biting his lip, trying not to laugh, but proving futile.

"No, it really doesn't - it's just the way they are." Charlie shrugged - his family was insane, they didn't know better half the time, and they thought he fucked dragons. He could live with all of that though. "Which is exactly why we don't need to tell them, they're smart enough to figure these things out on their own."

"Oh I plan on it." Charlie assured Callum.

That certainly made things easier, Charlie nodded considering where they might have the wedding. "Bill's place is nice." And it had often been an escape for him when he was younger - when the Burrow felt too suffocating. Bill and Fleur never had a problem with opening up their home when his family needed it.

"Oh is that was this is?" Charlie asked eyes going wide with wonder, before he grinned. "And here I thought this was the part where you just told me how we were going to do everything. I don't plan on seeking a divorce at any point down the line - I don't need the option, so I don't think it's going to be any great hardship to use the spell without it." The whole idea of no divorce was a bit scary, but not any scarier than the idea of marriage itself after all.

"Yeah I think I probably will ask Bill." Charlie couldn't imagine asking anyone else truthfully, he loved his other brothers, and he had other friends but he and Bill had always been closer than most. Charlie snorted and shook his head. "I don't know how I'm the one who ended up in the dress here, but that wasn't really my plan no," he paused for a moment watching Callum before he smirked. "Though white really could do a lot for you."

"Insane, yes, we've established that," he answered, grinning. "Don't worry; I knew it before I asked you to marry me, so it won't make me change my mind, and by the way, this is how you ended up with a dress. You made me ask you." He shifted and looked over amused. "What is this about Al telling you about a grand gesture? He won't say."

Callum hadn't really paid attention to the house or the outside. He'd been too nervous and it was dark and cold, but if it was what Charlie wanted, then he didn't care. "All right, then we can do it there, but it's by the sea and it's fucking cold there so we're doing it in June."

He nodded. "Good, because I believe that marriage is forever. You work hard to make it work or be miserable until you die or kill each other. I vote for working hard. Knowing that you can just get divorce is too easy."

"Thank goodness for that, I'd really hate it if you suddenly realized just how insane my family is and called the whole thing off." Charlie snorted when Callum told him how he was the one who ended up having to wear the dress - you know if there was even the slightest chance of either one of them actually wearing a dress at their wedding. "Ah is that how this thing works? I should have asked you then, I have a feeling you'd look much better in a dress than I would though."

"He won't say but he mentioned telling me to make a grand gesture?" Charlie asked arching an eyebrow - really Alastor Moody could be such a twit. Shrugging, Charlie continued. "He just thought it might help matters if I did something for your birthday." And while Charlie had attempted to it hadn't really worked out as well as he might have hoped that day.

It was cold out at Shell Cottage, but Charlie had always liked it - it wasn't as nice as the McKinnon place, but it had more meaning to Charlie than any other place. "So I guess that means we have the engagement time now as well." He'd need to talk to Bill soon, about having the wedding there - but he didn't think his brother would mind, especially since he was going to be the best man.

"I vote for working hard too - I'd really rather not be killed by you while trying to work out any marital disputes." He chuckled, "And god forbid you do things the easy way." He shook his head - as far as marriages went though, divorce really did make it too easy to give up on things, you had to work to make things happen and it was worth it to Charlie to make this work.

"I realised it long ago, Charlie. One conversation with one of them is more than enough. I've had more than one already," he answered. "I'm certain that Bill thinks I'm the crazy one for doing this the proper way, and yes, this is how it works, although if I waited for you to ask, we would have never fucked again."

Callum shrugged. "It's Al. He says what he wants to say, and he did mention my birthday." He raised his eyebrow. "So what was this grand gesture you were thinking of? I'm curious, now."

He snorted. "There are still a few weeks in June. How about the second week, whatever that Saturday is." He kissed Charlie again, because he didn't want to talk about divorce and ending things. It might be hard, but they'd make it work. They were too stubborn not to.

"I'm glad we're so good at showing how crazy we are as our family that you could decide all of that in just one conversation." Charlie grinned - not that he found the idea all that surprising. Merlin only knew what sort of things his family went around saying. "I was working on it." Charlie said shaking his head, but considering how things had worked out he couldn't be all that put out about that kind of teasing.

Charlie rolled his eyes when Callum asked him about his grand gesture - he hadn't gotten around to it after the way the conversation he'd had with Callum earlier in the day had gone, and then when he'd tried a second time Callum beat him to the punch doing the proposing for him. "A proposal of some sort." He told him. "Not that it exactly worked out in the way I'd thought it might."

"Are we going to be that nitpicky to get down to the days of how long the engagement will be?" Charlie asked, laughing, but he supposed it wouldn't be bad to have a date and they could work toward that. "Hmm... I think that works, no birthdays that I can recall." Though he'd double check to be certain.

Callum snorted. "You're working on it. I like that," he said, smiling. "Just like you were working on that proposal. Don't worry. I saved you from the evil proposal."

He rolled his eyes. "You do need to send the invitation in advance. You can't say sometime in June. You need dates and such. Speak with Bill and then we'll figure out the invitations."

He sighed. "I need to go. I've been here long enough and if I stay too long, I won't want to leave." He kissed Charlie again. "I'll see you tomorrow."

"You're such a prat, I don't know why I put up with it." Charlie said shaking his head as Callum teased him about the proposal. He was going to have to do something at some point just to prove he could plan something and pull it off.

He chuckled. "I don't know, with my family we might be able to get away with an invitation that just said sometime in June, but I'll talk to Bill and then we can talk about real invitations."

Callum leaving was the last thing Charlie wanted tonight, he enjoyed having him here pressed against his side, but reminded himself in less than a week they could make the announcement and he'd have Callum here every night after. "Yeah." Charlie said sighing and he stood with Callum kissing him again. "Don't freeze out there." He warned with a small smirk.
