Callahan snorted. "I didn't disappear, did I? I told them that I got myself a job that paid me good money and wasn't stuck in school with a bunch of looser like them. They promptly asked me to take them out and pay," he said laughing.
He looked at her, bewildered. He'd seen many things in his job, but he never thought that people could be so out of touch with reality. "You're kidding, right? Since when anyone cares about the kids in the wizarding world? We have no orphanage, no foster care, no child protective services, and this even after a war where many people died or were incarcerated. There is no elementary school. Kids are sent away nine months out of the year in a school where they learn to stay with their own. And people ask me why I don't have children-"
He shook his head. "No, no dirt, I promise. We'll find a bench to sit on," he said as he walked toward the takeaway vans. "Take your pick. There's plenty here."
