Remus was ready to just let it go and move on with the rest of dinner in nonsense pleasantries. He and Sirius could nurse their own hurt pride at home and everyone could move on. But, then Lily had to mention they were giving Severus a second chance and Remus couldn't help being upset on his friend's behalf -- the friend who still wasn't there, despite all their talk of letting the past lie and who had done less to them directly as he was than Severus had.
"So, was Peter invited to dinner?" he asked evenly. "He was James' friend. He's also stuck at Hogwarts. Al likes him. They're friends. It would be just as convenient. Does he get a second chance? The one you've both been talking to me about giving him for a year now?"
Sirius' quiet response almost broke Remus' heart. Remus had always been second place to James, third after he married Lily. It didn't affect him quite as much because he'd made peace with it when they all came back and he realised James and Lily were going to be too wrapped up in each other to even notice he was living in the same house for two months. But, Sirius had always been closer to James and Remus thought this must be killing him.
"Honestly, I don't care that we weren't the first to know. Who you tell is your own business and I'm just sorry this child will never have the chance to know his or her elder brother." Remus missed Harry greatly, in that moment. They may have disagreed on some things. But, Harry had at least tried to understand the other person's feelings. "But, I have to admit, I'm surprised. After what you both said to me about being hurt when I didn't tell you about my relationship with Regulus, I would have expected you to at least be able to understand the reaction you were likely to receive. Given all the history between all of us, how could you not expect there to be hurt feelings?"
How could they not expect Sirius to be crushed? It was Severus. James would trust Severus before he would trust Sirius. How could they not understand how that would hurt Sirius?
