"Severus is my friend," Lily said, finally speaking up. She'd hoped to avoid any of this conversation, but it didn't seem like that was in the cards. "We've decided to put aside the past and remember that, and James is attempting to do the same. For me, and for Al, because that's what you do when you love someone." She glanced at him and smiled warmly. "And he's doing a fine job of it."
She gave Sirius a very serious look and continued. "And telling Severus first had nothing to do with telling him first. I trust him with my life, and my child's life, and I know he'd do whatever he could to help, and that includes running tests of his own design to make sure the Dark Magic didn't affect the baby. I'm sorry if it hurts your feelings, but I had to do what is best for my child, and that meant telling Severus. If it was convenient because I wanted him and Al to come to dinner before school started and kept them away from social engagements, than that's how it is."
She sat back and took a deep breath. "Now, would anyone care for dessert?"
