RP: Al Potter, Poppy Pomfrey
Who: Al, Poppy Pomfrey
Where: the Infirmary
When: 1 November, after work
Summary: Al gets his glasses

Madam Pomfrey asked Al to drop by on Monday, and so he did, armed with a thorough checklist of all the symptoms she asked about during the previous visit, the estimation of how much they did not occur since, and the margin of error that Al might have been prone to in his analysis.

The ever-present Quick Quotes Quill perched on the Möbius strip of parchment at his left ear as he waited his turn on one of the chairs by the door.

"I'm sure you'll be fine," Poppy told the tiny first-year, fresh from the first day of classes, as she ushered her out into the hall. "You go write a nice note to your Mum, and believe me, you'll feel much better."

"Yes, Madam," the girl answered, her small voice trembling a bit, and Poppy laid a hand on her hair.

"You go on now. You'll see." She stood in the doorway watching the small figure retreating, wondering for a moment how much homesickness she'd treat in the first week of school. A fair bit, if previous years were any indication.

Poppy turned for her next patient and smiled upon seeing Al Potter in the waiting chairs. She moved in front of him to avoid startling him, then gestured invitingly into the examination room. Words flowed around her as she spoke.

Mr. Potter. Won't you step inside?

Al liked Madam Pomfrey's wand writing: it was neat and clean, and he followed it like a puppy into the room.

"Um, good afternoon," he said, presenting her with his list of filled in checkboxes indicating lack of studied symptoms between last week and now.

Randomly-relevant notes filled the rest of the page. Let it never be said that Al didn't take details seriously.

Good afternoon... Poppy took the offered list and looked it over, smiling as she did. Al was very thorough. Very neat. Perhaps a bit compulsive, but in this case that could be beneficial. He was likely to notice changes immediately, if they should occur.

This is most helpful. May I keep it for your record? She held up the page, then tucked it into his folder. She drew her wand and at his nod of permission, watched as he closed his eyes and then cast the same series of spells as before, checking for changes that would indicate further resorption of the old blood that remained.

She touched his wrist, then wrote, Everything looks very good. I see improvement from last week, although it's slight. It's very encouraging. And you've been free from headaches, dizziness, those sorts of things. She charmed her notes into the record, then laid the file aside.

And I set aside a bit of extra time for you. I have something that I think will be helpful for you. She moved to the desk and removed a small box from the drawer, then returned and handed it to Al.

Al's notes were filed along with his record, and he was only happy to have them archived.

As Madam Pomfrey handed him the small cardboard box, he examined its corners, top, bottom, and walls. The box was similar to those the quills arrived in when he ordered them by owl, but inside, it held no quills. Instead, as he opened the box, Al discovered a pair of new glasses wrapped in silk cloth.

He grinned and looked up at Madam Pomfrey questioningly, and then carefully put them on. He squinted as he felt the lenses adjust themselves, and then his eyes adjusted as well, and Al didn't need to squint any more to see the details of the tree branches outside the castle windows.

Brilliant!

"Thank you!" he beamed. "I've... I forgot to request new ones completely. How did you guess?"

You mentioned it the last time you were here. Needing new ones. I failed to find a photograph of you wearing a pair, but I hoped these might suit you.

She turned his record over and cast a reflecting charm on it, then offered the makeshift mirror so that he could see for himself.

Apparently I had a great many colleagues outside of Hogwarts for things beyond my own expertise. This one was willing to create spectacles on short notice.

Al peered down at himself and adjusted the grip and pinch of the nosepiece, the angle of the temple arms.

Madam Pomfrey's handwriting was crisper now, that he looked up at it through new lenses. He beamed.

"They're perfectly symmetrical and light and the lenses are wide enough to avoid interfering with my side vision," he said approvingly, pushing them up his nose as they rested in just the right spot. "Thank you!"
