RP: Scamander Funerals
Who: Lori, Add your tags
Where: Ottery St. Catchpole cemetary
When: 26 October, late Afternoon
Summary: Another funeral service

He'd kept the service short, because he didn't think he could handle anything else. After the short ceremony, Lori stayed where he was, not wanting to face the guests just yet. He just needed a minute to keep from crying, and then he'd be able to talk.

Rose was seriously beginning to think about boycotting all future funerals; she attended far too many in the last year. Less than a year, she said to herself. She couldn't believe how many there had been.

She waited until Lori had finished with his private grieving before approaching him. Her feelings were mixed toward him only because of what happened between him and Scorpius. Both young men were her friends, but the romantic in her couldn't understand how someone could cheat on their significant other. However, none of that mattered at that moment.

"I'm so sorry Lori," she said to him as she hugged him. "How are you feeling?"

"Thanks," he whispered, hugging Rose back. "I'm okay, all things considered." It wasn't entirely true, but he didn't want to get into how overwhelmed he was feeling with everything. He just wanted to get through this and back to the hospital. It was practically his home these days. His small room at the Leaky didn't count.

"Thanks for coming. It means a lot."

I'm beginning to hate that phrase too, she thought as Lori spoke. She pulled away and gave him a small smile. "Of course," she said. "Your family was wonderful. Even the quirkiness of your mother didn't stop her from being brilliant."

Rose took hold of his hand. "Do you need anything? A place to stay?"

He grinned, because his family had been amazing. "She was wonderful. They all were." His mother's quirkiness had been what made her Luna, and also what had ultimately taken her from him. She'd just been beginning to recover when the battle had come, but there had been no talking her out of fighting.

"I'm at the Leaky for now," Lori said. "Sandy and I had a flat, but when I went to check it's been...taken over." That was a nice way of putting it, and there was nothing left there anyway. Starting new was probably the best idea.

"Yes, they were. They will be missed."

Not that Rose had anything against the Leaky Cauldron, she hated the idea of him being there all alone. "Taken over by who?" she asked, not understanding what he meant. "You mean, rented out by someone else? Can they do that?"

She had only lived at home and Hogwarts until recently, so she had no idea.

"I didn't stick around to find out. The weird smells and sounds were enough to convince me to find a new place," he said, shuddering at the memory. "There wasn't anything important left there anyway. Just some clothes, and I can replace those."

He hugged Rose again, because she was starting to look teary and it made him uncomfortable. "I should go, but thanks for coming Rose. It really means a lot that you're here. And I promise I'll be fine. The leaky isn't so bad."

He'd never known Lori's mother, and it wasn't for her benefit that he was there. It wasn't even for Dom's sake, even if she knew the woman, but for Lori's, because he knew too well what this felt like.

He waited long enough for there to be a pause in the people wanting to console him and sneaked in, putting an arm around him without hesitation as he blocked off others. This wasn't a time to think, but to show what he felt.

"I won't say I'm sorry," he said. "Because I know it won't make any difference. But if you need anything, I want you to know that I'm there." He tried giving him a small smile. "Literary at that, it seems." After finding out he and Lori were on the same floor at the Leaky he'd kept an eye out, but so far he'd not seen him there.

"Keeping busy?" he guessed, because that was what he'd done. It had been the only thing keeping him together.

"Thanks for coming," he said, leaning on Dylan just a little. There was nothing in the gesture except taking comfort from a friend, and it was nice. "Yes, it's great to be back at the hospital. I've just been tossed back into the mix, figuring out what tests to take and where I stand in the training ranks."

He'd been spending twelve and eighteen hours at a time at St. Mungo's, catching naps where and when he could. HE knew he and Dylan were on the same floor at the Leaky, but he hadn't seen him around much. It was nice knowing there was a friendly face nearby though, if he needed it.

"How are you doing? And Dom?"

"Of course I came," he said. "There was never an option of not coming." It was ages ago since they've broken up, but that didn't mean Lori hadn't been important to him, and they were still friends. "I know the feeling," he said, and it wasn't just empty words.

"Did you miss much?" he asked, and surely what he'd done at Hogwarts counted as well.

He shrugged at the question. "Good enough. You missed a small crack in a rib," he said with a smile. "But they fixed that up in a few minutes."

"Dom's okay too. She's living with her dad at the moment." He looked over at her. "We're looking for a flat."

"I can still appreciate it," he said, smiling slightly. "And I know you do. Which is why your support means even more." He knew that being here had to hold bitter memories for Dylan, who had also lost his family.

"I don't think so. The training at Hogwarts probably actually put me ahead, at least practically speaking." And the aftermath of the battle had been about eight different tests rolled into one stressful evening.

He winced, but didn't let himself feel guilty. "I'm sorry," he said. "I'm glad it was just a rib." Though he felt a little dumb missing something so simple, he was just glad Dylan was all right.

He followed Dylan's gaze and smiled at Dom and Bill. "That's fantastic, Dylan. I'm really happy for you." And he really was. His personal life might be in the toilet at the moment, but that didn't mean he couldn't he happy for his friend.

Craig had given Lori his condolences, even as he felt lame saying them. There was never a right thing to say at events like this he felt. Still, it had been the right thing to do to come.

Now though, he at least wanted to talk to Dylan. Craig knew Jamie was likely busier than almost anyone, except maybe Hermione or anyone involved with all of the trials. So Dylan was the one he'd use as his sounding board.

"Hey," Craig said, going up to Dylan after he had left Lori. "How have you been? Got a few minutes or do you have to go back to work? I'm guessing you're crazy busy as well."

Dylan smiled at Craig, shaking his head. "Off for the rest of the day," he said. "I wish there were happier occasions than this to spend the time though," he added.

"I've been fine," he said. "Living at the Leaky until we can find a place. So what did you want?" he asked, curious at what it might be.

"I can agree with that," Craig told him with a nod. "How is everything in the Auror department?" Craig knew it had to be as busy as they were at Hogwarts getting things back in order.

"I'm thinking of leaving Hogwarts," he told Dylan as they walked a bit away from the crowd. "I talked with Miss Urquhart about working at Urquhart stables. I already spoke to the zoo, they don't need anyone right now." He shrugged, "It's not exactly what I had in mind, but I don't want to stay at Hogwarts, I was thinking that before everyone left. Then everyone did and it got about a hundred times more stifling."

Looking over at Dylan he said, "So how insane am I?"

"Busy," Dylan said with a small grin. "There are a lot of changes, but I like it." He didn't go into it more than that, wasn't allowed either. "I love it though. It's such a cool job."

He raised his eyebrow when Craig went on. "Any particular reason?" he asked. "Other than you finally got back your common sense." He laughed as he went on. "You're going to work for Cassandra?" he said. "You'll love it, those stables are like your version of heaven. They're enormous and gorgeous."

"As I said, not insane, rather the opposite."

"Yes well you always did have to be the cool one," Craig teased him. "How goes the finding a place to live? Is it going to include a couch if I need one while I look or am I banished to the Leaky?

Shrugging Craig said, "You thought it was a good idea when I first took the job, but yea going stir crazy is one of the biggest reasons." Running a hand through his hair he said, "I also miss working with animals being the biggest part of my job instead of just part of it."

Nodding Craig said, "Well I met with her this morning, I have to go back Saturday for a riding test and so she can see how I am with the horses, she doesn't like that I don't have any real experience with them as she calls it. Says I'll start out as a stable hand but if I do well there are other opportunities. Training would be interesting, so would healing. At the least being outside of Hogwarts it might be easier to put more of my time towards working on that."

He did give Dylan a grin though, "Thanks for saying its not insane though." Pausing he asked, "How do you know Miss Urquhart?"

"Correction, I always was the cool one," he said with a grin. "You and Jamie just tried to keep up," he tease, rolling his eyes. "What I always dreamed of, moving in with someone for the first time with my mate on the sofa," he said, though it was immediately followed by. "I wouldn't say no and you know it, I know Dom wouldn't either." Lord knew he'd spent more than enough time couch surfing.

"We need to find something first. You might want to start looking yourself you know," he added.

He coughed, thinking on what to say. On the one hand he was fairly certain Cassandra did not want him to tell the truth, on the other this was Craig and not answering would be much worse as Craig would automatically think things that weren't even true. "I had a couple of dates with her, nothing serious and it never went anywhere," he said with a shrug.

"You might not want to mention that to her though, she likes her private life private." Like Jamie in a way, but then both he and Craig knew how that worked. "You'll do great, and you'll get to know the horses in no time."

Rolling his eyes at Dylan Craig reached up to muss his hair, showing Dylan exactly what he thought of that statement. "Well part of it is will the Leaky allow Dean to stay with me," Craig told him, he had never checked to see if pets were allowed. "And since Dom loves Dean more than me I didn't think she'd say no to him." Plus there were silencing charms, wasn't like they couldn't do whatever they wanted without Craig hearing.

"Yes Mum," Craig told him. "Hell I still need to tell Snape I want to leave." The Headmaster wouldn't really kill him over this right?

Craig raised an eyebrow at Dylan commenting about going out with Cassandra a few times. "Got it, you don't exist, that's not so hard to pretend," Craig teased him. "And how quickly will I get killed if I call her Cassie?" Which of course he wouldn't call his boss that, he wasn't stupid, but the thought might make Dylan laugh, and let him know Craig wouldn't push for more details. He didn't want another fight over that.

"I am looking forward to riding them," Craig told him, "Especially the flying horses." That would be one definite perk. "I did like riding as a kid."

"Oi! No messing with the hair!" Dylan said, pulling back. "And I said you can stay. Bring Dean up and I might change my mind," he added with a smile. "We need to find something first though. It sort of helps."

He tilted his head. "Why don't you look for something on your own?" he asked. "You might find something as fast as we might. Who knows?"

He snorted when he brought up another inane nickname. "I'm sure she wouldn't kill you, that would get her in trouble with the law," he teased. "My bet is that you wouldn't work there another minute."

He smiled. "The flying ones are fun to ride," he said. "Not as fun as a broom, definitely slower, but much more powerful. It's sort of exciting not being in complete control."

"Oi!" Craig echoed, "That's what you get!" he teased his friend. "And you can't say that, you bought Dean for me, means he can stay too."

Shrugging Craig said, "I plan on looking for myself too, but it is harder to go out and check out the flats when living in Hogwarts, I'm hoping I'll have enough time I can find something but I wanted a back up plan." He grinned at Dylan, "And I know how much you love supporting your friends so I thought you'd jump at the opportunity for me to grace you with my presence for a few days.

"Yes well I never called Snape Sevvie so I think I can refrain from calling Miss Urquhart Cassie." Craig told him shaking his head, "You're the most fun to annoy with nicknames anyway Dyl."

Craig's mouth dropped opened. "You went riding on flying horses without me. I hate you." Shaking his head at Dylan, "I don't care if you were trying to get laid, you went on flying horses without me."

"I bought him for you, not me," he said with a snort, rolling his eyes as Craig went on. "You did want to stay, yes?" he asked. "You might want to hold off on the nicknames if you do."

"Yeah, sorry, no. I'm not bringing you on my dates. You'll have to survive without it."

"Fine darling I'll behave," Craig said with a smirk.

"But, flying horses," Craig shook his head, "I at least should have been told about them sooner!" Though if it had been while he was living at Hogwarts he likely wouldn't have been able to get away for lessons. "I didn't realize there was a major stable with them so close before, I definitely would have been taking lessons."

"You'll have to live. I don't kiss and tell and besides, there were other things on my mind at the time. When you end up in the middle of a war, flying horses doesn't really feel like the centre of the universe."

He looked around, spotting Dom. "I should go speak to her. I'll talk to you later, yeah?" Dom had known Luna, and while he wanted to be there for Lori he wanted to be there for Dom too. In the end, she was the more important of the two.

Another funeral. Merlin knew, Snape had been to enough of them, even before he'd come forward through time. But this one felt nastily incongruous to him, if only because he hadn't met Luna since he'd arrived in the 21st century, so all his memories of her were of her student self: someone too young to die.

He hadn't really connected Luna Lovegood (which was how he still thought of her) with the lad he'd met just once at one of Al's games: the medic his frantic Accio had snatched to Al's side, to save his life, his mind, from impending haemorrhage. So when he saw Lorcan, it was rather a shock.

He leaned gently sideways into Al - a subtle nudge aimed at gathering his attention - then he nodded at Lorcan, hoping Al would remember his mention that Lorcan had been the one to stabilise him on the battlefield.

The Ottery St. Catchpole cemetery was the only familiar thing left of the village now, to Al. The village was rebuilt differently from what he remembered it to be. The world changed again.

He felt old, older than the dirt he stood on and for a brief moment treasured the names and the dates and the stones surrounding them. So much family and friends buried here... The only familiar thing left.

And then Severus's nudge broke Al out of his thoughts and back to the living. Lorcan stood there.

"Yes," Al answered. "I need to thank him."

Al didn't remember a thing, of course, but upon hearing that Lori was the healer who treated him in battle, Al felt reassured. Lori, of all people, would have understood the significance of human minds.

He was good at what he did. Al was alive today because of him.

Lori finished speaking with Dylan, only to be cornered by the few but eccentric reporters from the Quibbler, demanding to know if they still had jobs. Lori stuttered through the questioning, wishing to be anywhere but here. He couldn't think about the Quibbler now. He'd make a decision about that at some point, but he just couldn't deal with it now.

He spotted Al and Severus, and made his way over. At least he could be sure that these two wouldn't be asking about future employment at a funeral.

"Hi," he said, summoning up a smile. "Thanks for coming." He was exhausted and wanted to go home, but he didn't mind spending a few minutes talking to Al. He hadn't had a chance to check in on him after the battle, but he'd heard about the hearing loss, so made sure to use a spell that would write out his words for Al. "How are you feeling?"

Lori's words were small and neat, like his notes, with the distinctly and persistently crooked rs. Al knew that handwriting well, even better than Lori's face or Lori's voice.

To think of it, he never paid that much attention to voices. Voices seemed so... monotone and random. Handwritings were distinct and unique to their owners, like the patterns on the pad of one's thumb.

"I'm well," Al assured Lorcan. "Thanks to you. Severus said that you helped me, afterwards." Al's face was neutral, as usual, but his stare was firm. Serious. "I'm glad it was you."

"I too am glad," Snape said gravely to Lorcan - the accompanying firewriting for Al was almost a reflex for Snape by now. "It was somewhat of a comfort to know that a friend of Al's was caring for him."

He cleared his throat. "I know my manner of ...requisitioning your assistance was extremely precipitous. I apologise for any distress it may have caused you." But he didn't say - or write - that he regretted it, because he didn't; he couldn't regret anything that helped to save Al's life and his mind.

Grateful for something to talk about other than the deaths of his family, or the Quibbler, Lori waved away the concerns. "It was necessary," he told Snape, writing it out for Al after just a second hesitation. "I just wish I'd been able to do more."

He knew it wasn't his fault about Al's hearing, but he was a Healer, and the fact that he'd missed something--whether it was a cracked rib, or something like hearing loss--was difficult to accept. He thought he could save thousands, or hundreds of thousands of patients, but it would be the ones where things went wrong, or he lost someone, that he would remember the most.
