Hugo knew it wasn't fine, but he didn't press the issue. It might make her cry more, and he didn't think he could handle that. Instead, he got out the makings for hot chocolate, making them each a huge mug of it.
"It's okay, Rose. I know you're...having a rough time. I'm here for you though, and I promise I'll be careful." He smiled at her, and went back to finishing dinner while the milk for the cocoa heated up.
"Food will be ready soon. I'm not sure when Mum and Dad will be home, so we should just eat and leave theirs warming in the oven I think." He was chattering away, making conversation, and trying to distract Rose from feeling so sad. He wasn't sure it was working, but he had to try.
