She cringed, pressing a hand to her mouth, struggling to stop the tears before they became helpless sobs. She wasn't a baby. Not a child... Her fingers tightened around Katherine's hand.
The arm around her was her undoing.
It wouldn't be okay. Nothing might ever be okay again, but she could pretend for a moment that it was her mother's arm around her, her mother's soft voice against her hair. Lilith managed to drag herself together, reining in the terror and the grief before it took her over, and she lifted her head and looked at the guard who'd stepped closer while she'd been crying.
She wiped her eyes.
"All right?"
She lifted her chin, then nodded. "Yes. Thank you." Gave Katherine's hand another squeeze. "Thank you..." It wouldn't do to let herself become so upset that they'd not let Katherine come again.
