"Ted, I didn't say you didn't want to get to know me." Remus sighed, wishing for the ease they'd seemed to communicate with before. "I was only agreeing that you might be right and that I don't know you as well as I'd like, that I want to because this isn't all about you having to change and learn. I have some learning to do, as well."
Taking a sip of tea to steady his own nerves, which were frayed as a result of his insecurities to begin with and made more so by what he picked up of Ted's anxiety, Remus chose his words carefully. He didn't quite have the confidence in his own words Regulus did and he didn't want to keep saying the wrong thing.
"No one expects Victoire to know all the little rules, spoken and unspoken, of Society out of the starting gate." Remus set his tea aside to focus on trying to explain. "And she isn't the only one who would be learning the way. Believe me, I understand being raised in a completely different environment. It doesn't come much more opposite of Society than a remote farmhouse in Wales. But, if they felt she would be receptive, they would be willing to help her learn. Astoria's been helping me. Belvina made the attempt to help Victoire."
Summoning the copies of the correspondence between the two women from his desk by the window, Remus passed the parchment to his son. "It's not the fact she doesn't know the rules that has rubbed people the wrong way, but the fact she comes out of the gate with insults and a seeming lack of courtesy. I'm not trying to criticise her, but to explain the impression she gives others. Belvina was trying to help her, sincerely, and she was insulted for her pains. Regulus and Sirius walked out of the wedding rather than cause a scene, but she felt the need to insult him with me sitting right there.
"It's not about fitting into a mould." He couldn't help but chuckle a little. "In fact, I'm pretty sure they broke the mould with Sirius and had to make a new one for Regulus, which was also broken. It's about learning about them, who they are, what being a member of the Black family means, and finding your own way to uphold that meaning. The family motto is Toujours Pur, a little difficult for a half-blood werewolf to live up to literally. But, they've found a place for me. They will find a place for you and Victoire. It will have to be within the rules of their world, however, because of the responsibilities to that world that come with the Black name."
Tilting his head to one side, Remus regarded his son thoughtfully, trying to gauge if he was making this better or worse. "Come to lunch," he said finally. "Have lunch with us, just the three of us, get to know Regulus a little without the tension of the other night. You can ask him any questions you might have. He's much better at explaining things than I am. From there, we can see. Start with small steps," he concluded, echoing Regulus' words to him the other night.
