Note: Belvina to Victoire
Who: Belvina Black, Victoire Lupin
Where: House elf delivery, Hogwarts
When: 12th September, 2025
Summary: Belvina tries to be helpful for Remus' sake.
Belvina had debated long and hard before sending the book with Dolan. Whilst she thought Victoire's behaviour had been detestable on Friday, the woman was hopefully not beyond redemption and could learn how to act within the family she had married into. She would have to come to learn that as Remus and Ted - and who named that child? - were father and son then she would have to interact with the Blacks and the Malfoys, even the Notts due to Andromeda's recent marriage.
She had also seen first-hand and was learning how much Regulus and Remus cared for each other and neither would put up with a slight to the other. And because she was trying to become more of a friend to Remus, she thought she was probably best-placed to send some well-meaning words of advice. After all, Ted was his son and it was incomprehensible that he be invited to events when his wife actively discouraged inviting his relatives to their own events and could not behave with any dignity at those hosted by others.
Dear Mrs. Lupin,
Please take this gift in the spirit in which it is intended. I do not wish to be rude or insulting, instead I hope to be somewhat educational.
Whilst I am antiquated by today's social standards, high society has not moved on since my time and these are the circles in which the Blacks, Malfoys and Notts will always move. This book should acquaint you with most of the do's and don't's and I suggest you study it intensively to avoid tripping up in the future. From what I understand, Ted was brought up by Andromeda and so should know these rules.
In case you are still unclear on our reactions from the other night, I shall explain fully. You were invited to the dinner out of courtesy, being related to Remus through marriage. However, neither you not your husband were expected to attend since you did not invite Draco or Astoria to your own wedding. Not inviting them would have been acceptable had you not invited their estranged son and other close family, therefore labelling them as people who you do not wish to socialise with.
I hope that you find my gift and explanation useful.
Sincerely,
Miss Belvina Black
[Enclosed: a high society etiquette book]
She passed the package to Dolan and told him not to wait for a reply. Victoire would likely not be so understanding at the moment but Belvina had some hope that the woman would grow wise to the fact that she was aiming to educate and not chastise.
