Even when James had been dying, he'd never cried like this - this was new and horrible and Sirius hated seeing James like this. "I know." He knew that feeling, when someone just looked like they were sleeping, like you just had to wait long enough and they'd wake again. "I know." He repeated again, because there wasn't anything to say that would make this hurt better for James. His mother was dead, and she wasn't going to wake up again no matter how much he wished she would.
Sirius let James lean against him, held him with a steady hand and pressed his forehead against James' shoulder for a moment. "You don't have to." He told James, lifting his face so he could look at him, and he wished this was something he could fix for James. That something as simple as a spell could make this right again.
"I'm here, I'll help." He promised James. Sirius might not be able to fix this, but he would do everything he could to help James through this. Even if that meant just being right there beside him.
