Summary: Loki goes looking for clues.
There were certain skills one learned on the streets that served better than others and still other skills that were best learned before venturing into the gutters if one wished to survive. The ability to observe and assess people and situations was one of the latter and one Loki had put to great use over the years. Kept one out of prisons and cemeteries, two places no good businessman wanted to inhabit as the result of incorrectly assessing a deal.
It was also a difficult skill to turn off, as one never knew when a situation would change or an opportunity arise. Loki suspected a situation had arisen recently, one he found disconcerting for it's curious nature.
Eileen had taken over the pub with the disappearance of the owner, never faltering, providing the perfect space for a new enterprise of Loki's devising that kept both their pockets lined with a bit of extra shine. Unlike many women might have in her condition, including his dear old mum, she hadn't let having a baby slow her down.
Only, then there'd come a day when there should have been a baby and there wasn't a baby. Eileen was back working as though nothing had happened. But, there was no baby. And the woman herself was remarkably closed lipped. Normally, Loki wasn't one to pry into another's business. In fact, after the first couple of inquiries were rebuffed, he ceased asking.
Still, when he got curious, he had to investigate. Given the state of the world, it might be wise for someone to know what had happened to the child, or if it was still alive, for that matter. Eileen had done well by him, he could no less for her. Loki might be a weasel of a man, but he had honour, even if it was twisted in it's morality.
All of which was what led him to snoop around. Having noticed the woman spent some time down in the cellars daily, he determined it would be a good place to start looking for information. Bypassing the the main cellar as not secure enough for any information she might be hiding, he moved further into the subterranean rooms and into her private work area, filled with it's glass tubes and bottles. Best idea was to work from the back out. Easier to say he was looking for her the closer to the door he was.
With that in mind, he moved to a far corner full of barrels, peeking behind them into the dusty corner. A lonely keg in a dusty corner seemed as good a place as any to start looking for clues.
