Summary: Baron has an encounter with Marlene.
Baron was ready for dinner by the time they got the dragons settled down for the night, but there were still things that needed to be done first. There weren't enough men for everything they needed, so everyone was pulling double weight while they got situated. Three days hadn't done much for the dragons' dispositions, and Baron didn't think they would be settling down any time soon.
Finally, it was time to call it quits for the night. He relieved himself in the designated area, and took a quick wash before heading to the mess tent. He was exhausted; six dragons was a lot of work especially with the number of men, and one woman his brain reminded him, they had let alone six angry dragons.
He collapsed into a chair, glad to see that the food was already there. He ignored the other men on his shift, they weren't trained for this and though he knew they were trying it wasn't the same as working with real Keepers. His Dad and Charlie were the exception, but they were in charge. He missed the camaraderie of the other Keepers, the shared interests and history, but he wasn't going to complain. Out loud, anyway.
At least being busy and overworked kept him from missing his wife. At least, until he tried to sleep. Even though they were on cots at the moment, it was still too big without her next to him; without their daughter sleeping safely next to them. He was lost in thought, and didn't notice he was alone until the woman walked in.
