"Dad started teaching me when I was five," he said, making his next move and snagging one of her pawns. It would leave him open to take her Bishop next, if she made the move he thought she would. That would checkmate in ten, which was six more moves than he'd have given his dad, if he'd opened as she had, but she was just a beginner.
"Watch out for the rook," he warned, because this was a teaching opportunity, and while he wasn't going to go easy on her he could offer advice. "But that was the first game I won that was played on his level, rather than on a child's, or a beginner's." He grinned at her, and the only downside to playing chess was that they couldn't sit next to each other. The game necessitated sitting across, which made kissing her difficult.
