Hugo grinned at her, and turned the board around. "You know how to set up?" he asked, though the chessman were pretty good at arranging themselves. "White goes first." He knew she kenw the basics of chess, and opened with a simple offensive move, and waited to see how she responded.
He loved Chess, had played it for as long as he could remember. First, sitting on his dad's knee and later sitting across from him. "I remember the first time I beat my dad,' he said, making another move after she'd done her first. It wasn't the same aggressive move he'd have made against his dad, but he wasn't going to go too easy on her.
"I was twelve, and I seriously think I could have flown without a broom." And it had been even better, because his dad hadn't let him win. It had been a long fought battle that lasted for three nights before Hugo finally cornered his dad into Checkmate.
